The Independence which is now named Oceanic left San Francisco today under the tow of several tugs and is reported to be on her way to Singapore but will more than likely end up at Alang or one of the other beaches. She was sold about a year ago by NCL and is now reported to be soon broken up. Another classic will soon be gone.

Photos taken today of her leaving San Francisco.

I felt ill hearing this news.  I am new to this forum, and was doing a search to find more info on this sad sad news.  I have a personal attachment to the Independence, and may the ghost of my Father now haunt her and her scrappers if that is where she is headed.  I had hoped she'd be turned into a reef.  My dad was a Chief Engineer on her, and died on her in the late 80's.

I see why you would have an attachment to the Independence. It's always sad to lose these wonderful old ships in this way. May your father rest in peace.

Thank you.  Now, I know I will never cruise NCL.  If the fates have anything to do with it, may the Indy find the same fate her sister did and become a reef afterall

What a shame.  I personally don't think NCL ever had plans to refurbish either the Independence or SS United States.  They only bought them, IMO, to protect their NCLA plans/investment.  Now, they're whining about the West Coast sailings to Hawaii.  I hope the government does not give in and change the rules.

I hope not either, Rich........all these shenanigans by NCL really have made me never want to sail on NCL again.

I agree with Deb.............:sadfriend:

And a reef would make it easier to take.........it would be a whole eco-system, instead of resigning her to a scrapheap.
