Have you cruised HAL before? When I was searching for my next cruise I expanded into HAL for a change although I ended up booking another line. Can you tell us what you like, dislike and what makes it different?

Congrats on your upcoming cruise Al!

Itinerary is Lv NYC - 2 sea days - Totola - St Thomas - Dominica - Barbados - St Maarten - San Juan - 2 sea days - NYC

We've done two HAL cruises before, one 3 night Skagway to Vancouver at end of land tour of Alaska, and a 12 day NYC to Montreal. We enjoyed both of the trips. One thing about HAL when we were on them was that the passengers seemed to be older. That didn't bother us a great deal as we are not late-night party people, but we did feel like youngsters :big grin:. I'm 64 and DW is 58. (cruises were 10 and 8 years ago). I have heard that HAL is trying to draw a younger crowd now. We'll see :).

There were several reasons we chose this cruise: it involves no flying, it's over 7 days long, the price was good (a needed requirement because a good chunk of travel budget spent on 2 weeks in Italy this Spring).

It's going to be a bit of a change since we have been on NCL for the last number of cruises and I love the Freestyle. Sitting at a large table, assigned seating, set times (even though they are moderating that a bit), and formal nights are all things I'm not sure of. I think I'll just eat in the Lido those nights.

That sounds like a great itinerary! I was on my first HAL cruise last year on the Westerdam and was surprised to see the number of younger people. I would say the majority of cruisers on that 7-day cruise was in the 40-60 age range.  And a lot of families with young children, too!  I would go again on HAL, but right now, my husband can only get off one-week at a time from his job.  :(

Did they mention ... no draft beer :nono:  Cruiser still wants to do this ... my experience with HAL has been the crowd is a bit too :gramps: :big grin:

I do seem to remember that there were more :gramps: than I've seen on NCL and RCI, not handicapped, just :gramps:. There were a lot of nice older gentlemen who were taking their nieces on cruises too ;). Also, there were fold-down seats in the elevators!

I forgot about the no draft beer, but after the draft beer fiasco on the Dawn last year, that's not a problem. We're probably going to do some big time vegging out :tropics:

LMAO!! I saw a man traveling with his "niece" on an RCI cruise once. She had to be 30 years younger than him and she liked to wear as little clothing as possible. Imagine my surprise when I follow them up the stairs and I see that she's not wearing any undies under her ultra mini!!OMG!:vomit:

:popcorn:I took this exact cruise last year in November on the Noordam.  It was great and I am going on it again this year on November 10th.  We are going back with my husband's cousins.  The age group last year was 40 to 60.  It was very attention to detail.  Was very spoiled.  Went on other ships but this one was definitely customer pampering.

Our trip on Carnival a couple of years ago was to Canada and it definitely was an older group.  I am in  my late 50's but definitely was one of the youngest.  There were so many wheelchairs you could hardly get around

The size of the cabins is very good.  Have been on the Ryndam to Alaska and Nordam to the Caribbean.

Going next year to the Baltic capitals on a new Holland America ship

Thanks for the insight loveall. I'm sure we will enjoy ourselves. I have read a lot of good things about the ship.

Hi Everyone (and, yes, that includes you, Big Al)  :big grin:

I just figured I'd pop over to this roll call too on behalf of Mom & Dad (Lanie & Ronnie) who will be on the 10/20 sailing with you!

As on "the other side", I'll participate for them (as I did last year - and they had a blast meeting everyone at the M&G).  And, yes, I really do keep them involved in the posts and the group.  They just don't have a computer, nor do they wish to learn to use one.

I don't mind - I just want them to have a great time and meet wonderful people!

Heidi, looks like we are the only two here that are going (or representing a goee) :P. Other side is quiet too.

Al - I know, it seems really quiet so far (not at all like last October's trip).

I know they need a "list keeper" (it was posted on the "other side").  I would help out if it would get things going.  I just can't volunteer Mom & Dad to really organize the M&G.

I think the list keeper thing is a hint to one of the ones who have cruised together before. I'd be willing to do that (ala Darcy), but not organize the M&G

I think you're right Al.  I just wanted to see what you knew so far about this since I'd like it to be fun for Mom & Dad like the last time was.

Well, at least they'll "know" you!  ;)
