This just hit my e-mail box:

Dear Mrs. Becky L Thane,

Before your next trip with us, we would like you to know about changes to our checked baggage policy and revised fees for excess, overweight, oversized baggage and special items, effective for travel on or after August 18, 2008.

If you purchase a United Economy® ticket on or after June 13, 2008 for travel on or after August 18, 2008, a $15 service fee will apply, each way, to check your first piece of baggage. This fee applies to travel within the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.

As previously announced, a $25 fee will apply to check a second bag when flying on a ticket purchased on or after February 4, 2008. Please refer to the chart below to see which checked baggage fees may apply to you.

We would like to remind you that additional baggage fees apply to check more than two bags, or if any bags are oversized, overweight and/or considered special items. These fees are also changing and the revised fees will apply to tickets purchased on or after June 13, 2008 for travel on or after August 18, 2008. Please visit the Oversized, overweight and excess baggage and Special items sections on united.com for details on these fees.

You will be exempt from the first and second checked bag service fees if you are:
  • traveling in United First® or United Business®
  • traveling on the same reservation as a Global ServicesSM, Mileage Plus® 1K®, Premier Executive®, Premier® or Premier Associate® member or Star Alliance® Gold or Silver member
  • military personnel traveling on orders
To help facilitate a speedy check-in for you, we are working on a convenient option of pre-paying for checked baggage fees when checking in online with bags, using EasyCheck-in OnlineSM. We will provide more information on the availability of this functionality later in the year.

For details on our baggage policies and frequently asked questions, we invite you to visit united.com/baggage.

We thank you for your business and look forward to welcoming you onboard soon.

Yup, American was first, and the rest will all follow (with the possible exception of Southwest) like a bunch of lemmings.:flamin:

Have I mentioned how much I hate the airlines lately?

My flying days are definitely over after our United trip in September.

We bought our tickets in February though.

Looks like I'll probably be not wearing formal wear on future cruises that require flying to the port:flamin:

When they first announced the second bag charge it was an irritant but not allowing people to even check one bag without a fee really pisses me off. :finger:

Apparently they're charing for water too as well as soda, which I think is just

wrong.  Ya get deheydrated when you fly and it's good to drink a lot of water.

I think at most, they should be allowed to charge ONLY .25 for a bottle of

water since water IS  necessity.  Bastards.

Although I can understand the predicament the airlines find themselves in,

why not just charge $4 round trip extra and act like they're giving us

beverages for free.

And yes, carry-ons will be next, which I'll kind of delight in since all these asses

think they'll be lugging on all the stuff that they don't want to pay for.

I'm sick and tired of people lugging too much luggage onto the plane and

they can't even hoist their crap into the overheard bins without inconveniencing

everyone who's just trying to get to their seats.

We used to joke about the "pay toilet" on the airlines, but I wonder how

long it'll be before them institute that ludicrous idea, and if they do, you

will hear the ACLU scream from here to timbuktu ---

The ports in Texas and Louisiana are closest to us. We could probably drive them in a day, but that would cut into our vacation time. Either way, it would cost us. Besides, I really love cruising out of Florida.

I agree.  I have always been one of the cruise passnegers that like to "dress up" for the 2 formal dinners.  But with the airliines reaming you on the suitcase charges, it looks like I'll be packing only casual clothes.  Too much space and weight to pack extra dress purses, shoes and clothes.  Too bad.
In the future, I imagine the dress code will be more and more casual on cruise ships. What a shame.

Well, we'll be in northeast Fla, which will still be a 6-hr drive to Miami.  :shoot me:   But, Port Canaveral is only a couple of hours...if only more ships would sail out of there!!

But, they do offer the "Cruise Connection" bus, which starts in Daytona Beach ( 1-hr south of where I'll be). So, we'll most likley take the bus down to Miami.......then, we can nap or read and maybe the 6-hrs won't seem so long!

That really sucks. Those bastards.
It really won't be much more to ship luggage now via DHL/FEDEX.

If for no other reason if this continures it will spell the end for formal nights on cruise ships. ;)

Additional info ......

The fee for checking a third bag on a domestic flight will increase from $80 to $125, while the fee for checking a bag that is between 51 and 70 pounds on a domestic flight will rise from $80 to $90. On any flight checking a bag that is 62 inches to 80 inches of the total of its length plus its width plus its height will rise from $150 to $175.

Delta warned on its Web site that if a customer has an extra piece of baggage that goes over the weight limit and the size limit, the passenger will be charged three times _ once for the extra bag, once for going over the size limit and once for going over the weight limit.

The airline said it accepts up to 10 checked bags on Delta mainline flights and four checked bags on Delta Connection carriers.

It said a $175 charge per item applies to media representatives carrying camera, film, video tape, lighting, or sound equipment.

Think of those poor media reps taking a cruise ..... now they are really gonna get screwed :big grin:
