So far this week, Aloha Airlines & ATA (this is NOT Air Tran) have gone belly up, and now the Alitalia agreement with Air France/KLM has fallen apart, with Alitalia's CEO resigning.  Looks like Alitalia may be the next one.

I'm just daggone glad I scrapped my plans for Hawaii in June. Even if we'd gone ahead with the land-based plans, they were contingent on cheap inter-island flights. Those days are gone... :(

I'm not so sure, Becky.  Right now, there is still Hawaiian and go! that fly inter-island.  Aloha blamed their problems on go! but I'm not convinced that was the problem.  If these two raise the fares too much, then someone else will come in and undercut them.

I've been booking people on Hawaiian for around $70-75 for the inter-island flights.  I think go! has been advertising some $49 plus tax fares.

The major airlines should be OK - look at United - they are still flying. The ones that worry me are ASA, Comair, and Chatagua - I fly them alot.

Maybe they shoudl have implemented a "fuel surcharge" - :roflmao:

For Hawaii, the Superferry is running daily between Oahu and Maui.   They are still negociating to get back to Kauai after the ruckus up there.   To the Big Island will start next year when they get another ferry.

They have specials now but normal fares run $51 Tue-Thu and $61 Fri-Mon with seniors and retired military $41 mid week and $51 weekends.   Extra charge for cars.

Nice way to switch islands.   They have food and drinks including Kona coffee and nice lounges.    6:30 am depart Oahu, arrive Maui 10:15 am.   Depart Maui 11:15 am, arrive Oahu 2:15 pm

They had some kind of accident with the Superferry while it was in drydock.  They've completed repairs, supposedly, and are going to restart operations April 23.

Seems they've had one problem after another.  I'm not too sure how long it'll be a viable option.  Too bad.

the super ferries in Hawaii are new since I was last there 5 years ago.  However we took the Fred Olsen ferry in the Canary Islands a year and a half ago, and that is a great way to travel.  Blasting along at 45 knots with your car.

Just got an e-mail from them last night.  They're restarting operations April 7 (next Monday).

http://www.skybus.com/

Skybus Airlines will cease all operations effective Saturday, April 5.
Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, customers, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated. Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.

Passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights scheduled to depart on or after Saturday, April 5, 2008 should contact their credit card companies to arrange to apply for a refund. More information for customers and others will be made available on the Skybus web site (http://www.skybus.com) as it becomes available.

All flights for Friday, April 4 will be completed. Passengers holding reservations on flights for Friday, April 4 should check in for their flight at a Skybus kiosk at the airport instead of the Skybus website.

OMG, erby posted the following earlier today -- they were supposed to fly on Skybus tomorrow!!!

erby2283 wrote: 1 more day!!!

I guess I will start packing tonight. Still have to go to Walmart and pick up some odds and ends. I must also remember to web check-in today around 1:30 so we can get priority boarding since my friend is petrified to fly.  Skybus does not assign seats and she will absolutely die if we don't sit together.

Kind of worried about bringing one carry-on and a back pack. I hope they consider a backpack a personal item.

EDIT: I just sent erby an e-mail with the news, but I certainly hope she knew before now. This really SUCKS.

Just heard back from erby -- she says they're going anyway, going to drive. I can't believe how P.O.'d I am _for_ her -- how P.O.'d must she be??? She said, "thanks for telling me." If I was the bearer of bad news, she certainly adapted quickly! Well, good for her! :proud:

My phone has been ringing off the hook about this. My family has used this airline frequently - and my parents just flew home from Columbus on Monday. My niece had reservations to come to FL in June. It was going to be her first solo trip - but since it was a direct we weren't worried. She is so sad right now. (Not to worry - my sis and I will figure something out - even if I have to meet her in Cincinnati to change planes). This is sad - but everyone said it wouldn't last. It was really too good to be true......:(

THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR THE NOTICE.

At first I freaked out and called my friend - both of us were in shock. She thought it was a joke b/c she couldn't find anything (and thought maybe someone hacked skybus' website).

The first two days we were spending in Daytona Beach and that's only a 7 hour drive from here. So I am printing out directions as we speak. She leases her Jetta and is way below her mileage alloted so she offered to drive.

We'll make this a girl bonding trip.  Becky - thanks for the extra effort to get in touch with me. I don't know what I would have done without you!

Also - just found out Skybus is filing bankruptcy - guess my refund for this trip and my June trip to CT is out!

Oh - AND THANKS SKYBUS FOR BLASTING OUT AN EMAIL TO ALL OF US TRAVELING! ASSHOLES! I GUESS THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO CONSIDERATE OF THEM TO DO!

Thanks for catching this, Becky.  I just saw it on the news and was getting ready to pick up the phone and call Erby.

Safe travels, Erby, and have fun!  As far as a refund goes, contact your credit card company.  They should be able to help you out.

Yeah, but if they file bankruptcy, I don' think I can get anything back.

You should be able to, as the airline did not deliver the promised service.  It's definitely worth a shot, in any case.  Here's the Skybus announcement:

Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, customers, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated. Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.

I just found this on Fox News:

Tenenbaum did not know how many passengers would be affected but said the company has flights scheduled through Sept. 2. All passengers affected by the shutdown are eligible for a full refund.
