Airline food has been the stuff of jokes since almost the dawn of aviation. But after many years of dulling passengers' appetites, a number of carriers insist they've gotten serious about upgrading the air fare, even in economy.
Following recent menu improvements in business and first class, Delta Air Lines is getting set to roll out cold entrées created for coach by chef Todd English, owner of six Olives restaurants. The initial selections — at $7 to $10, on a par with airport shops — include a roast beef Cobb salad sandwich, grilled shrimp salad, and black olive spaghetti salad. "We are trying to do a range of things that are familiar but push the envelope a bit," says English (right, with olive spaghetti salad). "You can't get too esoteric on a plane."
I tasted all three dishes, which will be available from Nov. 1 on longer domestic flights; my favorite was the roast beef. Then again, English prepared and served them at Olives in New York. Will the bread be as crisp and the ingredients as fresh when they come out of a cooler at 30,000 feet?

| On my recent flight on Midwest, I treated myself to hot crepes for breakfast. Surprisingly good for airline food and at a cost of $7. Credit cards only accepted, no cash.

When we recently flew on AA from JFK to LA, a 6 hour flight that departed at 645 am, we received NOTHING but a (as in ONE) beverage of our choosing - ONE beverage. Yet when I take Jet Blue from JFK to Raleigh Durham (1 hour flight) we receive a non alcoholic beverage and snacks at no charge. I don't understand this at all...fine AA, don't give me a meal, but to charge for a bag of chips or pretzels? Give me a break!
And now I shall hop off this soapbox!
Ciao,

Why don't we hear the same loud hue and cry from flyers about having to BUY their onboard meals as we hear from cruisers complaining about surcharge restaurants aboard ships??? At least on a ship there's still food included with your base fare!
(I find talk of "upgraded" food selections on airplanes laughable, particularly when none of the food under discussion is included in the base fare. I carry my food on.)

| Flew Delta back during the summer to New York. On the flight home, they served up a great BBQ Chicken pizza along with salad and damn good piece of chocolate cake. Better than any chocolate that I had all week on NCL.

We recently took a trip to Canada where we flew Cathay Pacific non-stop from JFK to Vancouver. The total cost of the tickets were $400 per person including the taxes and fees, which was easily the least expensive option for tickets out there. Because it is an airline that makes it's stop in Vancouver, and then heads to Hong Kong, they served food on the flight. and not just any food, a choice of 3 menu options. It was a bit of a flashback to the "old days" of flying when you used to get an actual meal. No charge for it either. You could also get a glass of wine with your meal, not extra cost.

| I've heard about those old days but never experienced it myself. That airline doesn't fly out of Kansas City so I may never get to try it. Wonder if any that DO fly out of here are that comparable?
