Just got back from our Mediterranean cruise. (It was round-trip Venice, Italy).
The Marco Polo airport in Venice (VCE) is a nice airport. It is a smaller airport and is very easy to get around.
Checking in on our return flight was a breeze! We did our own air on Lufthansa Airline, and the check in line was short and we were thru checking in and thru security in less than 30 minutes! 
They have beautiful hardwood floors throughout the airport and it is very clean. Since it is a smaller airport, security is close to the check in desks, and the gates are just a short walk past security. They have some nice duty-free shops there, as well as a couple places to get a snack.
I would definitely recommend this airport!
