Has anyone flown to or connected thru Kennedy recently? It used to be such a disaster when all the construction was going on. You had to take the bus to get to get to the different terminals and that was such a hassle.
But I think now the air-tran is up & running, right? We connected thru JFK last year on our trip back from Italy and we were connecting to an American Airline flight. We were amazed at the new and clean AA terminal! It was HUGE and it seemed to take forever to get to the gate, but it was clean and nice.

I've been through the new AA terminal (terminal 8 - it was 9 but they closed the old terminal 8 and renumbered 9 - just to confuse everyone I think).
It is a lovely terminal, bright and lots of glass. And from an international perspective, the immigration was a dream....30 desks, all open. It took about 5 minutes to get through instead of up to 2 hours in the old terminal.

Is the Customs/Immigration in a new building?

AA's new terminal has it's own immigration desks. There's about 30 of them and everytime I've been through (twice since it opened in June), all the desks have been open.
It was such an improvement - especially for us non-US passport holders who normally have to wait for at least an hour or more to be treated like a terroroist/intruder intent on destroying the US

I haven't been back since all that construction. I used to know the layout like the back of my hand, and then, last visit, never knew where I was.
I have since moved off the island. I've never returned to JFK.

Pete,
I think you'd be amazed at the change at least in the AA terminal. It's pretty nice now.
And the air-train, like they have at Newark, is a HUGE improvement over going outside to take those dirty buses to change terminals.

AA's new terminal has it's own immigration desks.
Please bear with me.........I'm a little slow this morning.
Is there only one Customs/Immigration area at JFK? Or are there more than one in different terminals?
I'll be flying in from Germany on Lufthansa, going thru Customs and then connecting to a Delta flight.

That will be a different immigration area in another terminal.
Lufthansa uses terminal 1, you will need to need to clear immigration there before transferring to (I think) 3 for Delta.

| Denise, Lufthansa comes into Terminal 1, and that's where you should clear C&I. Delta operates out of Terminal 3, I believe. You can take the Air Train between terminals.

Thanks, you guys. I really don't remember Customs last year when we flew back to JFK on AlItalia. I just remember we were connecting to American and the new terminal was so nice and clean.
I wonder if Terminal 1 & 3 have been renovated yet.

Getting around JFK, as in going from one terminal to the next, is now a breeze. The Airtran is the way to go, no doubt about it. The Airtran is FREE when you navigate from one terminal to another.
Whenever we can, we take the Airtran from home. We hop on a train on LawnGuyLand, change at Jamaica, get a $5 metro card (actually $20 - for 4 roundtrips), enjoy the 10 minute ride down the middle of the Van Wyck (do any of you remember Elaine's speech on Seinfeld and her "dismay" when she reached the Van Wyck???). It takes exactly 60 minutes from the time we leave our house to the time we enter the terminal at JFK.
The American termial is HUGE...if it existed, I'd use a word that described something much much bigger than HUGE. But it's the terminal of the future...they're planning for the HUGE jets that are being built. They'll definately be ready.
Ciao,
WaWW
