These are the online fares from everywhere that I've checked. The cruiseline fares, I think, would be more expensive, and you have no control over where or when you fly. Once, we bought cruise air and the cruise was leaving out of Vancouver. They flew us to Seattle and bussed us to the port! not fun! Then they ran out of room on the bus.

As a result some folks were moved into the 3rd bus, but their luggage stayed on our buss. When we crossed the border, the Canadians made us all get out of the bus, unload our luggage and go stand by our luggage!

Because several were on the bus behind us, we were delayed at the border because we had "unclaimed luggage". It was awful.

On a different instance, my husband and I were seated several rows apart!

Ever since those 2 instances, we have always booked our own flights. Also, we go in a day or three or four in advance of embarking so we can see the sights.

I understand.  Flying is such a hassle any more with high prices and overcrowded planes.

I booked on Air New Zealand. I realized later than I made a mistake on my disembarkation date and called ANZ to ask if they could delay my return flight (then over 8 months away) - Sure -for $400 pp more!

I just have to cut my stay in England to 1/2 day and a morning as a result. Bummer.

Lack of cheap one way flights could realy hit the TA market even with the extended itineries to try and make them more attractive

The other problem is the lowest price is currently dicatated by the Taxes so flying out of the UK can be more expensive than a hop into europe then onward.

I use http://www.skyscanner.net for finding the cheap stuff around europe. handy if you want to combine a land tour with a cruise

http://www.bt-store.com  came up with a good one way from the US to UK.

I use http://www.flightaware.com to track flights.

I also recommend flying http://www.jetblue.com especially with children.  Our flight last week was very nice and enjoyable.

I was not happy with Jet Blue. Air France sat on the tarmac for 45 minutes. We dashed to meet out Jet Blue flight - airplane still on the ground, but they said no- we were too late.

Having flown in from Paris to JFK and sleeping on an airport bench was not fun. We took the 6 a.m. flight out the next morning. We've seen planes wait and even go back for a pax, but not us. Oh well.

They do have very comfy planes!

Things are getting tough all over. Have you heard anything yet about how people in the UK might be looking for vacations closer to home instead of doing a TA?

The TA's never seem to get pushed that much in the UK market except for ISland and OV, occationaly a travel agent will do a package with flight that you cannot better DIY, we did RCI Nav last year and NCL pearl the year before, last years Gem we DIYed, cruiseline air is usualy not that cheap.

We are trying to sort out another one for April but Air is the issue, Voyager from Galvaston,Navigator for florida,Gen from NY all great cruise fares but no good one way air, can get a return but not sure if we will do a TA in the late season.

Most UK cruisers like the package deals so Thomsons,OV,Island all do them for the the med and any caribbean cruises they do, Princess put on charters for the main cruises so can offer competative packages for europe and the caribbean(14n inc air<$2000). P&O is pretty much ex UK only, all the lines are now basing ships in the UK primeraly for the BAltic/Norway market but some do the 14n med runs, RCI have a good market with the Navigator last year and Independance this which has sold very well, princess have the Sea, NCL Jade part time, Celebrity.

The UK market has a lot of choice close by ,northern europe and all the main med ports are servised by low cost air. With the budget cruise lines we can, off season, get a 1week med package for $600-$700 with air/transfers.

Thanks for the info! Those last numbers look great! It's been a long time since my last TA flight and we won the trip to London so it was paid for. I can't even begin to imagine what that might cost today.
