If you're traveling before Sept. 30, you no longer have to have received your passport for flying to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, & Bermuda, but you must have proof that you've applied.

I guess Congress got tired of intervening.

How is that going to work?  Since in order to apply you have to send your Birth Certificate to the Passport office.  Is everyone going to be rushing to their birth cities to get a new BC?  Government, is there anything that they do right?:flamin:

You don't need a BC.

Adults who have applied for but not yet received a passport should present government-issued photo identification and an official proof of application from the U.S. Department of State.  Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents or legal guardian will be permitted to travel with the child’s proof of application.  Travelers who have not applied for a passport should not expect to be accommodated.  U.S. citizens with pending passport applications can obtain proof of application at: http://travel.state.gov.

It looks like you can click on the link to get proof that you've applied for a passport. Since I've had mine for several years, I'm not sure exactly how that works.

OK, let me wrap my mind around this....  let's just say for giggles and grins I am an Iranian terrorist.  I have a fake BC and I fill out the passport paperwork with false information.... So, I show up at the airport or the border with my proof of this application which is of course bogus and I present the application and presto I am in?

I know I am thinking too much, but .....

Sounds about right to me.  Of course, same would happen after they issued the passport based on the bogus info.

Why is this  (I do know why) such an issue? This has been coming for a long time. As far as I am concerned, this is what people get for waiting until the last minute. :finger: :nono:

Even though we didn't officially need them, we got our passports last year because we knew eventually we would have to have them. We got ours in less than five weeks and did not pay extra to expedite.

This is exactly what I said last night.  This is not a freakin' surprise.  It was actually pushed back last year.  What's the issue???????  I see no issue.

I don't understand all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, either.......  To my way of thinking, if you can't afford to get the whole family a passport, can you really afford the vacation?

My answer to that . . . NO! It's easy enough to plan ahead and even get passports one at a time if necessary. It's the people who suddenly find themselves having to travel outside of the country that I sympathize with since they didn't have the opportunity to plan in advance. Other than that, people should have had this done months in advance. It's taking at least 2-3 months from what I'm reading to get passports and some are cutting it close.
