I can't imagine what it must feel like to live on the western gulf coast right now. Terror.
Here's a bit of completely irrelevant trivia for you. If you look at the map RnE posted just now, where it says 2 AM Monday, my house is basically just above the M in 'AM.' Like I said, completely irrelevant.

As it passes through here they are calling for up to eight inches of rain, so you might want to do this Monday. A little protection never hurts.

Well at least you won't have to water the lawn this week

| Just have to say, you guys are doing a great job keeping us up to date. It's fascinating (in a weird morbid way I guess) and I've learned more about weather patterns from this site than I ever retained from any science class, I'm ashamed to admit! IKE is full of IKE (Integrated Kinetic Energy).
How ironic is this? This WILL be the storm to prove that the Saffir-Simpson scale is NOT the best way to gauge how bad a storm is going to be. This will prove that windspeed alone should NEVER be used as a metric to gauge relative danger and evasive planning.

Just wanted to say that the radar SG posted is based on land based radar that can't see through the storm that far out to sea. Much more rain than that.
By this afternoon and evening when the storm gets closer to landfall, that will be one hell of a radar to watch.
Thanks Jim.

This is going to be ugly. The smart people have already gotten out of town. I cqan here the fools now "don't worry dear its only a cat 2 not reason to get out of here. We been thru worst"
16 ft waves in Galviston now going to 32+ on top of 20 ft surge. There will be total distuction in some areas NW of the the eye.

Until the radar stations fail.
Actually there's not enough RX88 stations close to the coast and for such a reason. Advanced satellite imagery can provide this information (see the link I posted previously). Newer satellite technology is going to allow for 3D transparent views through systems providing wind speed and wind direction data. Eventually the hurricane hunters won't even need to fly sorties! For those wondering when we'll be able to CONTROL the weather...
Well in order to control weather we must be able to forecast with 100% accuracy. Yeah, I don't think we have to worry about that any time soon!

Everyone needs to be aware of this with the new projections SG just posted. Galveston's seawall is 15 to 16 feet tall. The surge from Galveston into SW Louisiana will be 15 to 20 feet with waves on top of that of 25 to 32 feet.
This storm throughout has followed the path the 1900 hurricane did that destroyed Galveston and killed thousands. Yes, that was considered what would be a Cat 4 today but as Dave said, you can't go on that alone. It looks like Ike is pushing much more water.

Remarkable the south end of Galviston Island is already flooded. TWC just reported hurricane winds will reach as far as a 100 miles inland and to cover your windows. Houston looks like the current bullseye. Anyone believe this is going to happen
Galveston Departures – September 11 and September 14
We are also expecting the Carnival Conquest to sail as scheduled on Sunday, September 14.
I just that this storm is not as bad as it looks now. Nothing would make me happier then all the predictions are wrong. If not they will be finding bodies of those foolish enough to ride this storm out in many places.

The NFL has postponed the Ravens game so probably not. The port may be closed for a while.

| We're located 200 miles north of Houston and getting easterly breeze with some high thin clouds. They're calling for tropical storm force winds and lottsa rain for Saturday evening here, so we'll just have to wait and see how Ike tracks after landfall.

Me thinks the news is going to be bad. They say about half of the people from Galveston are still there. Already, in the Boliver area to the east of Galveston, the Coast Guard is rescuing somewhere up to 40 people who are on their roofs due to flooding.
A news crew on the way to try to get to Boliver saw the water is up to the roads and animals like turtles, snakes, rats, etc., are on the road trying to flee the water.
Galveston has shut off all water service.

My DIL, the two boys (ages 2 and 4), and four cats and a Jack Russell terrier are in a hotel in New Braunfels, just north of San Antonio.
My son is a paramedic and is in the midst of a 60-hour shift working out of a hospital between Lake Jackson and Bay City. about 40 miles or so from Galveston and maybe 10-a5 miles from the coast.
I have to work from 4 until midnight today and pretty much all day tomorrow. That is not something I want to do under these circumstances.

| Their house was built in 1889 and has a plaque in front stating that it's a survivor of the 1900 hurricane. The 12-foot seawall was built after the 1900 hurricane, and my son is in the part of the historic district protected by the seawall. He is about 10 blocks from the seawall and maybe four blocks from the port. Also, his house is up about 6- to 8-feet above the groud and the ceilings are 13-feet high, so it will take a lot to reach the second floor. It has hurricane shutters and is protected on the sides by other old 2- and 3-story houses in vey close proximity. I hope they don't have any damage or flooding, although they may lose some shutters and windows.

Good luck to your son and his family!
One of my former co-workers has a partner whose family's Galveston home was destroyed during one of the hurricanes when she was about 10. They rebuilt, and I'm hoping that they will be safe this time around.

Anyone know of any cruises that left Houston or Galveston earlier this week and due back this weekend?
I just saw a glance of a parking lot at a port, not sure which port, that had a number of cars in it and the water was already up to the floor boards.

| There is a thread on CC about the Conquest. A few people checking in from Coz today. Looks like they don't know where they will port when then can get back into the Gulf. Some have already been in contact with their car insurance companies and are planning on complete losses.
