The panic has begun around town.  There still hasn't been a call for a mandatory evac of Galveston, only the not-seawall-protected west end is under a mandatory evac.  Everyone's gun-shy after the Rita fiasco, and I'm worried the crying wolf game is going to bite a lot of people south of town in the butt.

Probably gonna ride it out here, if I win the argument with Matt - heading out around 9:30 to get batteries for the flashlights, maybe some more water, and some vodka from the liquor store.  Hurricane party time!

I'm sure Matt will go to 12 hour shifts starting tomorrow.  I asked him what he was supposed to do if he was working when the storm was at its worst (which it looks like he will be) - he said find an overpass to park under and ride it out.

You all be safe there in Houston.

Hurricane hunters in the storm this morning see signs of a new eye forming replacing the old one.   This is normally a sign of reforming and growing stronger.   The pressure is down to 958 mb which is low for a Cat 2.   It still looks to be at least a Cat 3 at landfall.

Even with winds still at 100 mph this morning, hurricane force winds are out 115 miles from the eye and tropical storm force winds are out 255 miles from the eye.   This storm system is over 500 miles wide.   We are looking at a Katrina type storm here and maybe a little bigger at landfall.   There will be some long term power outages as it looks now.

Whoa, I hadn't noticed.   Pressure has dropped to 945 mb this morning as of hurricane hunters.   Another big drop.

Just wanted to keep a current map on the page. It looks like it retains the Cat 3 winds well inland.

If nothing changes you could see 100mph+ winds in Houston. Better get two bottles of Vodka and double up on the water. Don't forget the ice !! :blownaway:

Got any friends in Dallas you want to visit

The second eye wall still has not taken over so Ike has two eye walls and a little shear in the western part of it.    This has kept it from building.    One eye wall will have to take over if Ike gets to that Cat 3 they keep saying.

Landfall looks like it will be west of Galveston and landfall looks to be at high tide very early Saturday morning.   If winds stay at 100 mph, expect Galveston to have a storm surge of 10 to 12 feet with waves on top of that of 16 to 20 feet.   Both may go up a bit if it gets to Cat 3.

Don't let the wind speeds fool you!  This storm has more (much more) kinetic energy than Katrina did at PEAK!  What this means is even if there are NO increases in wind speed the area impacted both by spread of wind and most importantly the storm surge will be significant!  This is not to be taken lightly to those near the coast.  Pay attention to warnings and instructions provided by public safety officials and emergency management personnel!  Acting unwise can take your life!  This is no joke, this storm is going to be a mean sonofabitch.

The CNN Breaking News email I just got  summed it up

-- People sheltering at ground level at Galveston Bay when Hurricane Ike hits face "certain death," the weather service warns.

I hope everyone takes their pets with them when they leave.......they'll surely die if they abandon them.

This often becomes the topic of a heated discussion (pet displacement).

Pets can NOT accompany you to a shelter!  ANYONE living in a hurricane prone area really needs to think this out LONG before any storm looms on the horizon.  Make arrangements as early as possible to have a friend outside of the danger zone watch your pets if possible.  NEVER wait to the last minute to run out of harm's way.  There is nothing worse than seeing a dog running loose in 100mph winds.  I've seen it and the feeling knowing that you are powerless to do anything is stomach wrenching.  You know that the animal will drown and if you try to save it you will be killed!

Prevention goes a long ways here.  It's the ONLY way and the responsible way as a pet owner.  Unlike an earthquake you have sufficient warning.

We have some dear friends who live in Clear Lake. They took their horse and headed for Central TX yesterday.

Come on up! It'll be a bit wet here too, but unless the creek rises, should be safe.

D-Day has arrived.   Winds have picked up a little to 105 mph.   But the size of Ike is where the worry comes in.

Very soon, the coast will start feeling tropical storm force winds and by sunset tonight could be feeling hurricane force winds.   Remember, hurricane force winds go out 115 miles from the eye.   The storm is moving at 13 mph.   Those hurricane force winds will be felt for about nine hours BEFORE the eye hits the coast and up to nine hours or however long it takes the storm to downgrade after the eye hits and tropical storm force winds or above for 30 to 36 hours.

This much wind on top of all that water Ike is pushing.   And like Dave and others have said, the size of Ike make this a big water event.

BTW, although oil has gone down, gasoline went up big time yesterday on the market, as much as $2 a gallon.    And as usual, retailers started raising the price at once long before that gas will reach the market.   It went up 15 cents a gallon here yesterday.   Even if the oil production in the Gulf goes undamaged and oil continues down, gas will stay up to pay for this.   So top off if gas is still down in your area this morning.   But what do I expect.  I start a 3500 mile road vacation on the 30th.:sucks::moon::roflmao:

And I just saw a report from Galveston.   They already have waves of 13 to 17 feet that are coming over the seawall.   This was reported 20 hours before the eye is to hit land.

Actually, some shelters are now accepting pets. They must they must be in crates or cages. Since there were so many pets that died during Katrina, a lot of  cities are allowing pets in at least a couple of their shelters.
I know in Fla when TS Faye blew thru a few weeks ago, there were 2 shelters in my area that did accept pets.

But, you do have to plan ahead and find out which shelters do allow them. And then make sure you have a secure crate or cage big enough for your pet that they can sit/lay commfortably. And have enough pet food for several days.   I think the shelters that accept pets may require the pets have their shot records with them, so that's something else to get ready.
