My upcoming cruise was scheduled to stop in turks caicos.  Anyone know if we will still go there?  What port will they substitute?   Oh..and I am really feel bad for those poor people.

I hate it when the town I am visiting gets destroyed by a natural disaster.  It's such a bummer for me.

Can't they wait till the floods go down a little and they have a chance to access the damage before they worry about their friggen vacation?

Maybe cruise ships should still go to these ports after the they are destroyed. A whole new set of shore excursions might be good for a lot of people. 8 am - help rebuild a hospital, 9 am help rebuild a school, 9,10 & 11 am work at the food bank, 9 am habitat for Humanity excursion.

I completely agree with you.  I don't understand how it's lost on them that people have lost their lives and many are without homes.  There is an entire fishing village that lost EVERY boat.  The coming days will be horrible for these people.

I have a friend who does 2 "mission cruises" per year.  They do some type of outreach at each port.  Many cruiseports are in impoverished areas so he never runs out of things to do.

Ya know you guys really may be on to something. Carnival has the "on deck for the cure" program that does pretty well.  I bet there would be some folks willing to chip in, either financially or providing a body to help out with rebuilding.  Problem in many ports is such a short time, though.  Still, for all we get out of these ports, it is not much to ask to give something back when they are in need.

If it's properly organized you can get a lot done with 50 extra sets of hands and 5-6 hours in a port.  With a nice set of skills you can get plenty done.  It would be great if the cruiseline got on board with the idea.  (pun was accidental but I like it because it makes me sound like I am cheeky)

HAL has the cure for breast cancer... you definately might be onto something.
Grand Turk is the worst hit in the Turks, so I'm suspecting their nice pier and Margaritaville might not be...
The eye double backed directly over them in three days, so they got hit twice by Ike. Quite a few people were evacuated to Miami prior. But those would be the corporate company workers probably.
The IGA is still standing.... hope the power is up and desalination plant working.

Cdn's evacuated yesterday from Holguin (only) very early yesterday am
Actually looks like it shifted futher south than anticipated. Apparently a noisy night last night. Alot of cubans evacuated to Havana.
Which way is this thing going to go now? Last time I saw it was still westward.

When I checked a few minutes ago, it was still moving west.   They are still projecting it to turn NW very soon and head on the land through Cuba.

However, if it doesn't turn within the next couple of hours, it will emerge over water again.

Major damage reports starting to come from Cuba.   The Turks are saying up to three months to get electric back.

The 11:00 am advisory does show it about to exit the south coast of Cuba and then run just offshore.

BTW, the winds of Ike coupled with the winds from that big high over the mid Atlantic states will cause some wave and rip action from the tip of Florida north to the Carolinas.   Be careful if you hit the beach in the SE today.

Thanks for posting this link.  Callum has a Geography project to do on hurricanes.  He's to select a hurricane from the last couple of years and write about it.  This site has them all listed with an overview of the areas hit and the general effect.  Now all HE has to do is stop watching his DVD and look at the site!

Good news - Bad news this morning.

Bad news is for extreme southern Texas as that looks to be the new target.   The low from the NW didn't make it and a high is forming behind a front moving through the midwest.   This should steer Ike more to the west entering lower Texas.

Good news is this will keep Ike well below and away from most of the oil fields.   The last I looked yesterday oil had gone up over $109.   It should start back down now.   They have been holding up on firing up most of the Gulf production after Gustav until they see what Ike does.   If course they will use this hold up as an excuse to keep the price of gasoline at the holiday level even though demand is down and their tanks are full.

Today OPEC meets.   Iran wants to cut production to maintain crude over $100.   So far it looks like the Saudis will not let a cut in production occur.   As the largest producer in OPEC, they can block any cuts so let us hope they hold that line.

The eye of Ike has now made it into the Gulf after passing over western Cuba.   It held on as a Cat 1 hurricane with winds of 75.

Still looks like it may give only a glancing blow to the oil rigs.   Next 36 to 48 hours will tell.

Also looks, like Gustav, it may pay me a visit next week.   There is a tropical storm off of Baja that will also hit the Baja this weekend and may be what turns Ike towards me after landfall.

Good possibility by Monday.   This thing will be moving fast once it hits land and may still be a tropical depression when the first bands of rain hits up our way.

Still a Cat 1 this morning but winds are picking up and now 85 mph.    Water is warm and conditions are right for it to continue to build strength.   Cat 3 or maybe even a 4 by landfall Saturday..   TS Lowell will hit Baja about the same time and turn Ike quickly north at or around the time of landfall.

No, always just fascinated by weather.   Plus, I worked for 20 years in the Air Force in ground communications which included working on some of the electronics in the base weather stations so I picked up some working with the weather people to get those things working the way they wanted.

Of course, this was before they had computers to do the work for them.:big grin:

Winds are now at 90 mph and the pressure has been dropping so it should be a Cat 2 by this afternoon and a Cat 3 by tomorrow.

A system is in Washington state that could change this if it moves down but for now, Corpus Christi look out.   The area to the east of Corpus Chrispi around Port O'Connor may have major water damage.

Ike is now a Cat 2 with winds of 100 mph.   Pressure is still dropping and is quite low for a Cat 2 so expect a Cat 3 by morning.

Ike has also increased in size.   It is very wide and growing.   If the eye hits as projected in the Corpus Christi to Port O'Connor area, expect the whole coast line of Texas to feel the effects of this storm.

If you live as far north as Dallas, expect tropical storm winds and rain Saturday and Sunday.   Oklahoma will see rains and gusty winds Sunday and Monday as it will still be a TD when it crosses the Red River.

Not good news at all this evening.   Ike just keeps getting larger and wider.   It's footprint is just about filling the whole Gulf from north to south.

Projections for landfall are moving NE, now looking like about 70 miles SW of Galveston, just east of Port O'Connor.   And landfall may well be as a Cat 4.

This means the oil rigs in the Gulf, especially the west side, will be affected.   It also means Galveston could see some major damage.

Ike has just slowed down too much, now 8 mph, allowing it to build and the steering currents to get down there to move it towards the oil and major cities.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.   By evening tomorrow should give a fairly good indication of landfall.

This is not good. At least they've started evacuating those who can't evacuate themselves.

Good news bad news morning.

Good news is, much to my surprise, the winds are still at 100 mph.   Maybe Ike won't get to Cat 4 but still should end up a major Cat 3.

Bad news is landfall is moving ever closer to Galveston and will most likely be before sunrise on Saturday.   This storm is so wide now that the coast from the Florida panhandle to the TX/LA line is seeing the tide run up to five feet higher and wave action up to and a bit over 20 feet, and that is today while Ike is still well out in the Gulf.   Ike is pushing a lot of water and this is not good for the area to the east of landfall.

Once it does hit land, it should move fast.   It's expected to be up near me on Sunday and still a TD.   It will then move east across the Mississippi.   Gusty winds, heavy rain, and possible tornadoes in the Heartland Sunday and to the east Monday.   Plan your travel accordingly.   Saturday will be bad across all of eastern Texas all the way north to Oklahoma.
