Things are looking better for mainland Florida this morning.    Things are not looking so good for the Turks, lower Bahamas, Cuba, the Keys, and somewhere in the Gulf.

If this thing heads for New Orleans, it's going to be bad as many people will refuse to leave.   People only seem to look back to the last hurricane and that was Gustav.   Katrina is history.

They put the hurricane hunter into Ike for the first time today.   It is now a Cat 4 again with 135 mph winds.   It will be in the Turks tomorrow and hit Cuba Sunday night or early Monday.   That should downgrade it quite a bit before it enters the Gulf as it looks like it will spend a lot of time over Cuba.

However, the Gulf looks more favoriable for this gaining back to a 3 or 4 than it did for Gustav.

If all the steering sets up like they think it will, I think Biloxi or Mobile, but it could be anywhere from Texas to the Florida panhandle.

This morning it looks like it may go much further west in the Gulf.

It should be an interesting day in the stock market tomorrow.

P.S.   For some reason I'm starting to feel like Bama.   I'm talking to myself.

Me too!  These storms fascinate me, and I'm glad to hear from those of you who understand what's going on.

Most of us can predict as well as the weather people do.

Yesterday, all of the local plus national were saying it would be sunny and mild here.   At 12:15 it started raining.    At 1:15, still raining, so they changed to a 30 % chance of rain.    1:30, it quit raining so they left it at 30 % as it takes two hours of rain for them to change it to 60 %.    It takes four hours of heavy rain plus flooding to get to 100 %.

I knew it would rain as my legs hurt like hell and the cat came in.

Here's a little bit to help understand the steering of Ike.

A high pressure ridge formed in the Atlantic.   The winds around a high is clockwise.   As well as finally moving Fay north so fast, it has also had Ike moving west at a good clip.   That high, though mostly still over the Atlantic, has moved in behind Fay on the East Coast.   This should give you east coasters a couple of nice days now.

As Ike goes over Cuba, he will get west of the high.   Therefore, even though it will continue him west, he will turn more WNW to NW.   Ike will also slow down as it gets west of the high.   If nothing else would steer Ike, it will continue to the Texas coast.

However, a large low, counter-clockwise winds, is forming off the Alaskan coast and projected to move into the lower 48.   How fast it moves down will influence Ike.   If it's slow coming down, Ike will go more west into Texas.   If it moves down fast, Ike will be trapped between the high and low and move north, hitting further east.

Therefore, Texas hopes the low comes fast to turn the storm north, and Louisiana east hopes the low takes its sweet time.

If it makes it all the way to Texas it will have a lot of time over open water to strenghten.   If it is turned north, it will have less time so that low will be a double edged sword for someone.

BTW, the eye went right over the Turks.   Initial damage reports don't look good.

I am wondering if the port is destroyed at Grand Turk.  How sad for those people.

I haven't heard.   You have to remember that the eye of Ike is 25 miles wide, about as wide as the islands.   Hurricane force winds extend out for 60 miles from the eye.   With the eye going over the islands they had hurricane force winds for 10 to 12 hours and tropical storm force winds for much longer.   I fear what we are going to hear when this thing moves away from them.

I found this report on the Turks

Some of the strongest winds hit the low-lying British territory of Turks and Caicos, where Premier Michael Misick said more than 80 percent of the homes were destroyed, fishermen lost boats and people who didn't take refuge in shelters were cowering in closets and under stairwells, "just holding on for life."

"They got hit really, really bad," Misick said. "A lot of people have lost their houses, and we will have to see what we can do to accommodate them."

It was too early to know of any deaths or injuries on these islands.

The full report can be found here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26540352

Here's a bit more from the report.

'Holding on for life'
Some of the strongest winds hit the low-lying British territory of Turks and Caicos, where Premier Michael Misick said more than 80 percent of the homes were destroyed, fishermen lost boats and people who didn't take refuge in shelters were cowering in closets and under stairwells, "just holding on for life."

"They got hit really, really bad," Misick said. "A lot of people have lost their houses, and we will have to see what we can do to accommodate them."

At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT), Ike's eye was just east of Great Inagua Island in the southeastern Bahamas, with maximum sustained winds of 135 mph (215 kph). It was moving west at 13 mph (21 kph) and was expected to remain a major hurricane as it approaches eastern Cuba, still about 130 miles (205 km) away.

"All we can do is hunker down and pray," reserve police officer Henry Nixon said from a shelter on Great Inagua where about 85 people huddled around a radio.

Great Inagua, closer to Haiti than to the Bahamian capital of Nassau, is the southernmost island in the Bahamas archipelago. It has tens of thousands of pink West Indian flamingos — the world's largest breeding colony — and about 1,000 people. Both populations took shelter — the pink flamingos gathered under mangrove trees ahead of the storm.

"They know what to do. They always find the sheltered areas," Nixon said Sunday as Ike blew shingles off rooftops.

Rain drove in horizontal sheets and wind tore through roofs across the Turks and Caicos, which has little natural protection from an expected storm surge of up to 18 feet (5.5 meters).

In South Caicos, a fishing-dependent island of 1,500 people, most homes were damaged, the airport was under water, power will be out for weeks, and every single boat was swept away despite being towed ashore for safety, Minister of Natural Resorces Piper Hanchell said.

Tourism chairman Wayne Garland was text-messaging with two people in Grand Turk during the height of the storm. "They were literally in their bathroom because their roofs were gone," he said. "Eventually they were rescued."

In Providenciales, there was flooding, roof damage and downed power lines but no injuries, he said.

"Fortunately, we were able to evacuate most of the people in low-lying areas to shelters, so thankfully I don't expect to have any injuries. We'll keep our fingers crossed that that's the case," Garland said as he left to assess the damage.

Ike's pelting rains couldn't have come at a worse time for Haiti. The Mirebalais bridge collapsed in the floods, cutting off the last land route into Gonaives, Agriculture Minister Joanas Gay told state-run Radio Nationale. Half the homes in Gonaives, Haiti's fourth-largest city, were already under water.

We are breathing a cautious sigh of relief today, seeing that Ike might spin into the Gulf, instead of up Florida, as previously predicted.  I do feel so bad for those poor people in the Turks and Caicos & Haiti........Haiti is such a poor island, and I have seen the little old shacks some live in..........and now with all the flooding there, it's heartbreaking.

It's nice to see the people on the DS posting about Ike.  I keep seeing posts that say something like this:

My upcoming cruise was scheduled to stop in turks caicos.  Anyone know if we will still go there?  What port will they substitute?   Oh..and I am really feel bad for those poor people.

I hate it when the town I am visiting gets destroyed by a natural disaster.  It's such a bummer for me.

Can't they wait till the floods go down a little and they have a chance to access the damage before they worry about their friggen vacation?

Maybe cruise ships should still go to these ports after the they are destroyed. A whole new set of shore excursions might be good for a lot of people. 8 am - help rebuild a hospital, 9 am help rebuild a school, 9,10 & 11 am work at the food bank, 9 am habitat for Humanity excursion.
