my gosh, even if it becomes a 4 or 5, i hope it doesn't pound that area, rich.  i have a couple of stubborn cousins who stayed.  sent their wives and kids packing.  they have plans to head out elsewhere if it looks like it will be just as bad, if not worse than katrina, but they will not get to an area that is all that much better b/c there won't be time.

Tell to get the f out. No sense being macho with a storm that does not give an F

i haven't spoken to them, they weren't home (probably preparing).  i spoke to one of my aunts (who is the mother of 2 of the 3), but not my other aunt who is the mother of the other...there is no talking to them, she said.

they did all leave for katrina, even these 3, so i am not sure why they aren't going now.  they do not live in the city though remember, even though they do live in very low lying areas just outside of it.

my aunt's house had significant flood damage from katrina b/c of a levee breach in her area.  but even though the whole area was severly affected by katrina, the city of new orleans was unspeakably demolished compared to what my family suffered.  my aunt's neighbor stayed through katrina, even with the flooding, and faired well compared to those in orleans parish.

i remember after katrina, they weren't letting them home.  it was a terrible nightmare for them trying to get back.  it tooks days for them to reach their house.  the water had been sitting in it for so long that the mold was everywhere, up the walls, etc.  i really think this is why my cousins stayed now that i think about it...so they cld start any necessary clean up right away, instead of 4 days later.

only a couple of them are there.  the rest of my other cousins; and my aunts and uncles (my grandparents on that side are deceased), have already gone to and arrived at higher ground.

Sounds like time to hit them over the head to knock them out and drag their asses out of there.

Thoughts & prayers to all in the way.

thanks, rich...i edited my post above to include this:

i shld qualify this to state that them "staying" was the decision as of 5 p.m.  i know they wld have been "behind" the others in evacuating anyway so that they cld board up and sand bag, etc.

but i am fairly certain, that as reports come in, if this looks like it is going to be a monster, they will be wise enough to finish their boarding up, and get the heck out of dodge.  they are all keeping on contact with one another.

i really do think they wld be smart enough to stick together (the stragglers), and go to a safe location where they will all be together, even though it may not be quite as far away as the rest of the family is.

this will also enable them to get "back" to their homes quicker.

At 2:00 am this morning, after exiting Cuba, winds were 135 and by 4 am had dropped to 125.   It should start intensifying later today.

Forward movement is up to 16 mph, so it looks like landfall tomorrow.

Watch out in Florida today as T-Storms are moving across your state from this.

Hurricane force winds are reaching out 70 miles from the eye.   As bad as it is, it could be much worse.    That is fairly compact for a storm of this strength

Time is running out for New Orleans residents to flee the approach of deadly Hurricane Gustav, which is tipped to gain power before slamming into the US coast.

Mayor Ray Nagin has ordered the compulsory evacuation of the city to begin at 8am local time (2pm BST) as the "storm of the century" churns around in the Gulf of Mexico.

It is almost three years to the day since Hurricane Katrina swept through the birthplace of jazz, killing hundreds and exposing deep poverty and lack of preparation.

Fox correspondent Marianne Silber said billions of dollars of repair work has been left undone and authorities are worried about the damage Gustav could do.

"The forecasters are saying this is going to be worse than anything they have ever seen and they absolutely do not want people taking chances," she said.

Highways around New Orleans are jammed and hundreds of people having been lining up to board buses as authorities urge residents to get out before the storm gets any closer.

Sky News weather presenter Lucy Verasamy said: "This hurricane won't just affect New Orleans - but that city still hasn't recovered from Katrina and the levees will never be able to take Gustav's storm surge of over 20ft. No way."

Between Gustav and Hannah, it looks like the drought may be over for the southeast. Maybe a little too much rain.

If there is any good news, it's that it has picked up speed to 17 mph.   The southern LA coast will feel the effect by sunrise tomorrow if it follows course and this speed with the eye hitting by mid morning.

The faster it moves, the less time it has to strenghten.

Storm surge is expected to be 6 to 8 feet with a small band up to 15 feet.

A buoy just north of the storm has wave readings of 32 feet.

Do the math.

Mother Nature will do as she pleases and there's nobody to be blamed for it.  I just hope people take this seriously & take preperations to keep themselves AND their pets safe.

I hope they don't abandon their pets and leave them to die alone.  :(

This does not look good.

Living on the coast up in New England, we look at the winter storm/blizzard warnings sometimes a hurricaine. As a kid, we would go to bed hearing about a potiential blizzard on the news and then wake up to no snow and the weather forcasters would say that it changed course and went out to sea. My point of this is to say that I hope that the forcasters are wrong. I hope everyone is safe and sound.

Winds down to 115, speed up to 19 mph, landfall in the morning. Lets just hope the wind speeds continue to drop and the speed of movement continues to increase.

A bit of good news.   A hurricane hunter aircraft was in the storm this afternoon.   The north eye wall has a hole in it.    This means it's a bit disorganized right now and as fast as it is moving probably won't have time to organize and strenghten much prior to landfall in the morning.

They also now think the eye will go in a bit more to the west than they had earlier today.   If so, the eye will pass about 65 to 70 miles to the SW of NO.

Still could be bad with the angle it is going in pushing a lot of water but maybe not as bad as it could have been.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. NOLA sure doesn't need a repeat of Katrina. For the sake of whoever gets the brunt of this, I hope it isn't as bad as predicted.

That four o'clock actually has the lastest land fall.   Before, it was a bit to the east with the eye going over Houma, which is 50-55 miles SW of NO.   Now saying it will go west of Houma over swamp land up to Morgan City.

That's good for NO but if it goes any further west, it will tear that coast line to bits running just off shore at that angle.

The mayor said not everyone left Morgan City.

He's getting closer.   NO is seeing winds at 30 with gusts to 50.   As far east as Pensacola is seeing some heavy bands go through.

Steady winds are still 115 with hurrican winds out 70 miles from the eye and tropical storm winds out 230 miles so NO will most likly see some hurricane winds.

I can't find wave action near the eye but south of Pensacola waves of 17 feet are reported.

At 6:20 central things are heading downhill and will continue to do so.

Houma has steady winds of 29 gust to 48

New Orleans has steady 34 gust to 60

and Grand Isle, closest to the eye, has steady 47 gust to 60

In another few hours, NO expects steady 50 to 70 and gust to 80

Houma will be just off the east eye wall, could be bad, and the eye will pass over Morgan City with strength determined by how much Gustav loses over the swamp land

Thank goodness, Gustav has been downgraded to a Cat 2.  From looking at The Weather Channel, all reprters saying it's not too bad there yet. It's gone to the west of NO, and the video's they are showing does not show much damamge so far. Thank goodness.

I am now concerend about Hannah...........
