Should be a fish storm but it's rare that a Cape Verde storm forms this early.

The last time we had a similar scenario in mid July was 1996 and ironically that storm was also named Bertha!  Bertha = big trouble.  Bertha was also the name of a reconnaissance rocket that I built that exploded mid flight many moons ago.  Bad luck of the draw.

Nope.  Right now, though, the projected track doesn't bring it anywhere near Jamaica.

Invest 93 would be of principal concern to anyone going to Jamaica in the next week or so.  If it survives it could be a low grade TS or possibly CAT1 hurricane but current probs show <20% chance of that.

Remember a storm is NOT a dot on the map (think mariner's 1-2-3 rule) and even a depression can make things rough and rainy which is obviously not how one wants to spend a vacation.  (but beats mandatory evac orders!)

Hopefully it will dwindle and only amount to a small hill of beans. ;)  The season is young; September's the time to worry.

Folks living near the southeastern United States need to monitor this storm!  Each successive model run shows less of a tendency to recurve this one out to sea.

I'd almost forgotten it was hurricane season. Hopefully Bertha will remain a TS and not turn into something worse.

CAT3 already!  Wow talk about starting the season off with a bang!  (in like a lion and out like a lamb...yeah sure if we're lucky)

Speaking of luck this storm getting this strong is really a good thing as it will be influenced easier by troughs to the northwest and that is exactly what's needed for the classic recurve to keep her a fish storm.  Hopefully the models will be accurate and keep this one EAST of Bermuda.  It's a bitch of a storm and nobody wants to be in that northeast quadrant.  Particularly Bermuda.  (Fabian, anyone?)

I was as surprised as you to see that Bertha is a Cat. 3 already. The projected path puts it right over Bermuda by Saturday. I hope that changes.

Current forecasts take it east of BMU which is good.  Of course this (much) recurve can never be guaranteed.

Impressive outflows with this one!

I'm not great with latitudes and longitudes without a large map. Where is Bertha now?
