I'm not finding any clearly good recommendations for independent tour operators here. Any suggestions?

I have seen two recommendations, but have not used them:

Sunny Liston Tours <
liston@sunnylistontours.com>  He has a web site for St Thomas but not for St Maarten.  http://www.sunnylistontours.com

Joyce Prince joyol1771@yahoo.com  http://www.joyceprince.com

Thanks wicked! Yeah, we usually shop too. Found one of our favorite souvenirs in a shop there for $12. No, not the guavaberry, a map! ;) My favorite beach spot was Everyt'ings Cool, but I understand it's gone now. Next time St. Maarten is on the itinerary, I'd like to see some of the French side of the island and hit Orient Beach.

We rented a car and drove around the whole island.  Spent a couple of hours at Maho Beach then on around the island through Marigot and over to Orient Beach.  It's a very small island and really easy to drive around because there's basically a coupld of main roads that take you everywhere.  It was a great way to see the whole island.

That's what I was told. Something to do with new construction in the area. I can't even find the website anymore. :(

I really have no idea because I haven't been there in several years. And it's been at least a year ago, maybe longer, that I read about this. Maybe someone who's been there recently can tell us what's up.

We were in St. Maarten in April and we used Joyce Prince.  She was wonderful and very interested in making your trip to St. Maarten 100 percent satifsfied.  You tell her directly what you want and she will find it for you and take you there.  We were interested in finding a Caribbean Hook Bracelet...so she took us to a special jewler in Philipsburg that she knew that could be trusted.  He did not have the bracelet that we were looking for, however he did have a different one that I fell in love with.  Steven said we would take it and reached for his credit card and found he left it on the ship.  No problem the jeweler said...take the bracelet, you are with Joyce, I trust her, when you get back to the ship, call me with your card number.  So that is what we did.  When we checked the credit card bill, it was exactly the charge that the bracelet was for.  What a wonderful experience of trust that was.  The experience was as great as the bracelet was.  She took us to Rima's shopping and we loved the store and the prices.  She charged us $35.00 each for a three hour tour.  It was worth every cent and we would not hesitate to book her again.  She is very hard to book as she is quite popular so if you are thinking of booking her, call well in advance.  Do not wait until you are close to your cruise date as she will be more then likely booked.

Last year when we were on the Mariner of the Seas we had a great time on the Lord Sheffield - a full-masted tall pirate ship.  Here's a link to its Website -

http://www.stmaarten-shoretrips.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23&osCsid=bb30d5c5ac641806b2edd7f0465e60ba

They serve lunch (BBQ ribs cooked right on board, among other things) and cocktails :beersign: while they give you a tour around the coast of the island.  Be sure to wear lots of sunscreen.  I got a prety good sunburn.  They also make a stop at a beautiful beach where you can snorkel.

Oooooh! I love the looks of that ship! I've done the Golden Eagle Catamaran twice now in St. Maarten. Maybe next time I'll go for the tall ship AND a tour with Joyce!
