My wife and I both have trouble walking long distances without breaks so going with a large tour can be a problem.   In both NYC and Washington DC, we hired a guide just for us.   It costs quite a bit more but we saw several times more than we could have seen alone and at our own speed.   Plus the guide can tell us much more than we could decipher on our own and take us to great places to eat.

I'm having a hard time finding one for Philly and the couple I did find on-line has not returned calls.   Anyone know of a company who is reliable and reasonable?

We need them for Saturday, October 11.    We got a damn good deal on the Comfort Inn Downtown on Columbus Blvd at the junction of I-95 and I-676 for the 10th and 11th.    It's only a few blocks from the historic district and they will shuttle us there if we don't think we can walk it

Hi,

I would not suggest that you stay there:shock: It is in a pretty raunchy area. I am from the Phl. area. Perhaps you could get a rate on the Sheraton Society Hill? It is closer to where you want to go (the Historic Area).

Phl. has walking tours and tours by horse and carriage. I am not sure what you want to do:confused: Give me an itinerary and I can help you.

OK, how bad is it.    I looked at the Sheraton and can stay at the Comfort for two nights for what one night at the Sheraton would cost.    As long as the hotel is safe, it doesn't matter that much as we won't be getting out in that area that much.   Not at all at night.   The Comfort has pretty good reviews from independent sources.

As far a what we want to do.   We just want to see as much history as we can in one day.    In both NYC and DC, we just gave the guide a couple of must see things and told them to work them in but show us your town as you see it.   Both were great tours.   When we needed to stop for a break, we stopped and the guide would use that time to give us the oral history.   When we got hungry, we asked where the locals ate.    We just enjoy it more with a local guide who knows the city and no real schedule to keep.

No, my mind is never totally made up.    I really want to hear what you have to say.

As far as going out at night, we are not night people.   If there is something we must see at night, it would have to be Friday night as Sunday morning we will be on the road early.

Maybe they cleaned it up by now:confused:.....OK, homeless, rats, robbery and possibly bedbugs:shock: This comes from colleagues of mine. I was going to stay there once after a party and changed my reservation.

Did you look at the web site? Are you driving?

Yes, we will be driving and it does have a $22 per day parking fee.

I did look at their web site but then checked out a few other web sites that would give a better idea of what to expect and nothing on those were a deal breaker.   Here a sampling from one other site.

These reviews are rated 1 to 5 and the average is 4. Some of the comments.

Very Nice Moderate Hotel that is centrally located near the Philadelphia tourism spots and the waterfront. Parking, though somewhat pricey, was very easy, efficient, and safe. Hotel staff was super nice and helpful. A very good hotel for the money

perfect location, clean, comfortable, friendly staff.

its not the fanciest or the trashiest. Beds were comfortable, rooms were clean, staff was friendly. Close to historic sights and public transportation. Would recomend getting a room on the river side of the building, Noise from I-95 and rail was loud and woke us up every morning. Front rooms had a nice view of the riverfront

The hotel has a great view of the river. Make sure you ask for rooms with the view otherwise you’ll hear the roar of the highway. They have a bar, although the prices of the drinks are high and the breakfast includes waffles and bagels. For the price, I’d recommend this hotel.

The front desk staff was extremely helpful in providing transportation and area attractions information. The hotel offers a free shuttle to and from attractions within a 10 block radius, which was very much appreciated.

Compared to other hotels in the area, The Comfort Inn in the Downtown Hisotric area of Philadelphia, was cheaper than other hotels, yet, still was within walking distance of the downtown area. Keep in mind, this is from a person who is used to the size of New York City, so a 20 Street walk or a 4-5 Avenue walk is alright with me. The cleaniness and friendliness of the staff was welcoming, and willing to share their expertise of the hot spots, and how to get there. They have a shuttle service that is convenient, and will drop you off anywhere in the city, althouht it only runs until 12 noon, then takes a break from 12PM to 4 PM on certain days. Make sure you check the schedule of the shuttle, and plan your day, so you don’t end up taking a taxi, or walking back to the hotel.

Out of about 30 reviews I read, only one said it was dirty and the only thing they said to back it up was hair on a towel. A number of people said it was noisy with the interstate but not as bad on weekends

Thanks.   We've called the phillytour twice and left our number.   No return call after two days    We've also called Feeladelphia who is suppose to have a private guide service but they haven't called back either.

Of course, with a name like Feeladelphia, maybe what they call a "private" guide and what I call one is two different things.:lmao1:

OK...here is what I got for you:

It seems that this group works well with the NPS:

http://www.centipedeinc.com/   But I think they do “group tours”, I’m not sure if they do private tours or you just sign up for a tour or whatever.

There are a few different paid walking tour companies (this is one: http://www.phillytour.com/service.asp?ID=37)  But keep in mind they DO NOT take you into any buildings and they CAN NOT give you history on the buildings while inside (if you find one that will take you inside), it’s against park rules.  Centipede actually DOES go into the buildings, but they know when to step in and then step out.  Everything within the Historical Park is free, they only need tickets to see is Independence Hall itself, because the tours are timed (tickets are free at the visitor center, starting at 8:30 in the mornings and when they run out, they’re out for the rest of the day – i.e. get them early).

This place does bus tours…  http://www.bigbustours.com/eng/philadelphia/tours.aspx, but again you don’t get to go into the buildings at the Historical Park unless you get off and walk around there.  This is another trolly that you get at the visitor center at 6th and Market, you can buy an all day pass for $5/pp and it makes 21 stops around the Center City area – (I think some are different than the double decker bus above, but the cost difference between the two is huge)  http://www.gophila.com/C/Tours_and_transportation/401/U/Phlash/1303.html

When seeing the Historical Park – if you hire an independent tour guide to take you around, keep in mind that these tour guides are not licensed in any way, they’re notorious for giving out incorrect information…  the rangers in the park are the best knowledge base, and there is at least 1-2 rangers in every building IN the historical park.

I know, my son used to live in Old City and he lived on Race also;) You can go one block in any section of Phl. and the neighborhood changes dramatically.

Remember, they don`t walk and walking those cobblestones are a horror even for me sometimes.

yes..you are right..they have been rehabbing a lot of nieghborhoodsnorth of old city and houses that were once 60k are now going for 250K.

Did you look at the web site? Are you driving?

It's in the historic district not the "hood"...LOL

it is right by the "Olde City" area...plenty of places to eat and be entertained in walking distance.

;)

I know, my son used to live in Old City and he lived on Race also;) You can go one block in any section of Phl. and the neighborhood changes dramatically.

Remember, they don`t walk and walking those cobblestones are a horror even for me sometimes.

Really?

I never realized the whole city was that bad?

I told you that you made up your mind:roflmao: You will be fine and you will love Philadelphia:big grin:

Nope, still not 100 % made up.   This isn't one of those things I can't get out of and no money lost.

But whether I stay there or not, I think it's important that your views be on here.   Who knows who may be going to Philly and reads this.

But the way you'll are talking, I'm not sure this Hillbilly even wants to go to the city now.:big grin:
