Small group trying to plan excursions from either Carnival Destiny or Adventures of the Seas. Moving away from cruise ship sponsored tours, but cannot decide on what to do where. Can anyone point me to the right forum for south Caribbean excursions? My friends have left it all up to me to organize. Thanks

Private is definitely the way to go. Which islands are you expecting to visit?

Tell us what islands you are going to and most likely some of us have been there and can help you.

On the Southern, Margarita Isle, Ven., is one you should do a tour as there is not much near the port but there are lots of locals lined up to offer tours.

Aruba and Carucao are both great for just shopping and to dine plus you can shop without anyone in your face like most of the Caribbean.   You dock in downtown Aruba and the walk is not that bad in Carucao with the floating bridge now redone and a small shopping area to take a break in along the walk.

That is one of my major concerns. I emailed two companies in Antigua both offering guarantees of "timely" returns. Carnival seem to stay longer at island ports and may offer a little more comfort on that concern.

We expect to visit Antigua Barbados St Lucia. It seem really confusing trying to decide on what to do and where.

Kristien, Serenity Tours in St Lucia took care of our tours in St Lucia and Antigua, there was no need to search each island. If you call their toll free number or visit their site http://www.serenitytvl.com they should help you with every thing. Very friendly and professional. They have quite a number of tours.

Thanks for your help, I have called them up and the young lady there was very helpful. They do both St Lucia and Antigua I'll keep searching before deciding.

In Antigua, we went with Eli - we took Eli's Eco tour, I believe (whichever was the cheaper one).  In St. Lucia, we went with Cosol.  Both of those tours were very nice, and the operators mostly (in Cosol, really solely) rely on these forum groups for recommendations, and they're well used to the time limitations for cruise ships.

Eli was a snorkling trip (with some local nature-type scenary viewing).  Cosol was an island tour, with a trip to the banana farm, snorkling, and local viewing.  (Can't remember if there was something else, too.)  Note: the fish really do like the bananas - the tour guide isn't joking.

Thanks for your review Eeyore, Cosol is one of the operator under consideration.

I absolutely loved the tour with Cosol.  We were lucky to get Cosol himself as a driver, and he was very informative, and funny as well.  Another couple in our van had requested him, but we just got the luck of the draw ourselves.  I don't know about the other drivers, but we all went to the same places.  Their home-made rum punch is to DIE for - I had way too much of it!  (Maybe that's why I can't remember all that we did..... :P)

What I can remember: touring the islands on the crazy roads; a couple of very nice views; the banana farm; the overlook of those two peaks; the guy holding the snake (you could hold for a $ tip); the snorkling (yes, do feed the fish bananas - they swarmed); the nice buffet spread of island treats; and the fresh hot bread & cheese.

The earlier you book with Cosol, the cheaper it is.  We booked quite late (only about a week before we left, I think), and paid $10 more than others - the price seems to go up $5 first, and then $10 at the last minute.

Looks like you have a lot of good choices. Do they offer similar tours?

Can you believe it! Just got off the phone with Carol at Serenity Tours. I'll wait for replies from others. They all seem to call the tour to the volcano "island tour". Now I just have to sort out the differences.
