You can try the water music at Caesar Palace and gamble and the Sands. Don't miss the Pyramid and having coffee at the foot of the "Eiffel Tower" either. Most of them are on the Vegas Strip; Jambolee Show costs USD75 is good too.
Good luck!

Dawson, I was just wondering how you liked TI and if you've been to Vegas before, how does it compare. Also, how was the location? I know it's on the strip but is it North/South/Mid?
Thanks in advance for your insight.

How did you like the Mirage? The pool looks amazing but I'm not sure how important the pool is to us. I don't know if it will be quite warm enough in March but if it is, I wouldn't mind taking an hour or so to defrost from our Canadian winter

kathy32259 wrote: OK - here goes - I think part of my brain has recovered......
Right outa the gate - there was an equipment change in Atlanta Hartsfield - switched to a 767-400 and was booked in first class - with reclining seats, personal TV, the works. What a great start to a vacation!!
Arrived in Vegas at 9:30 am with the whole day ahead of me. VIP check in at the Golden Nugget - and got the room I requested. It wasn't cleaned yet - so they put a rush on it and said it would be ready at 11. Off to breakfast with the ladies and when we were finished the room was ready - so I moved in for the week.
The remodel at the Golden Nugget is great and still in progress - but you couldn't tell they were still working on it unless you saw the outside between the parking garage and the tower. That area is all blocked off because they are building another tower. The pool and shark tank are beautiful and they added an italian restaurant and bar next to the pool (The Grotto). The south tower lobby is finished and is nice. They put in another Starbucks which came in handy when I needed a boost of energy in the afternoon (practically everyday)
The first night (Sunday) we were on the hunt for the MegaMillions slot machines. The first one we came across was at the Golden Gate (downtown). To make a long story short - we each put $20 in the machine and after a couple of really good hits we had it up to over $500. Well - we kept playing and a couple of spins later hit the 3X - 3X - 2X - on the line!! $4500 jackpot. That took care of the cost of our trip so after that it was all fun and games. I played the whole week on Vegas money!! Woo Hoo!!
Tips for Cindy -
Play downtown. The slots pay much better there than on the strip. The blazing 7's at Binion's were paying really good - and the Golden Gate is always lucky for me. Hunt for the Wheel of Fortune $1 machines that only take 2 credits. Those are usually lucky too.
Take the Duece to the strip. It is a double decker bus - you can catch it at the end of Fremont street or at the bus station (which is located two blocks north of Fremont St.) It is $5 for an all day pass - and it stops all up and down Las Vegas Blvd. Cheapest and easiest way to get around and see all of the casinos/hotels/sites on the strip.
If you get a chance eat at the Main Street Station Steakhouse - downtown. The food is fabulous. Two of my friends had the steak and lobster and it was the best lobster tail I have tasted in a long time. Also, the 777 Saloon/Sports Bar at the Main Street Station has great burgers/fries and such. We watched the games here.
Tony Roma's at the Fremont has Steak and Lobster from 9 - 11pm for $12.99. We ate earlier and had ribs - the usual. Also, the have prime rib from 4 - 6pm for cheap.
If you want an elegant meal downtown try Hugo's Cellar at the 4 Queens. It is awesome - but pricey.
Make sure you take a trip to the new Premium Outlet Mall - it is about a $7 taxi ride or less depending on traffic. Real close to downtown and worth the trip. Great Shopping!
Make sure you don't miss the Paris! It has great food and shopping. If you have time take the ride to the top of the Eiffel tower. And if you are on the strip at night the Bellagio water show is awesome. Stop in at the Wynn and check out the $$ spent on building that place. WOW!! They have spared no cost. His new addition is about half done - it will be called the Encore. Go figure.
You will enjoy yourself just taking it all in. Be prepared to stay up late - LOL. If you have any specific questions - just ask.
Oh Yes - Thunder from Down Under is at the Excalibur........
Great review! Thanks for all the details! We are planning to stay on the strip (it's our first trip) but it looks like we will have to venture downtown to check things out Congrats on the win...we can only hope.

Sandy
TI is a great mid range property, right next door to Mirage with a tram between the two as they are both owned by the same corporation...
They are about mid strip and walking distance to many other nice properties..... Wynn, Venician are right acros the street, Ceasars not too far...google Las Vegas strip map so you can get the orientation on where everything is at...It won't be too hot in March so walking a bit is OK....July and August are no walking over 1 block months...you'll pass out from the heat..in fact I NEVER go near Vegas from June till mid Sep cause of the heat...that said I am set for the weekend of Sep 19th!!! woooo hoooo
You asked if I had been there previously before my TI trip....yup, about a hundred times! LOL When I lived in SoCal, Vegas was just a 3.5 hour drive so it wasn't unusual to just decide to go late on a Friday or Sat night and try to find someone sober to drive and be over there by 2 am..just in time for the party to start!! LOL

Kathy just got back from there again not too long ago, so maybe she'll have a few pics, too. They also like to stay downtown, like Laurie and I. . .

DOWNTOWN????? WTF???? report immediately to the losers thread!!! Is your hair blue????
Seriously though, even though downtown is cheaper you MUST stay on the Strip unless you have been to Vegas a bunch of times...I have stayed downtown a few times when I was in my 20's after I had been there a bunch of times and was single just partying with the guys so all we needed was a cheap place to pass out......
That said I just checked prices for my room at TI in Sept and the price has risen from like $120 a night (weekend price) to $225 :holymoly: in the last 5 months...obviously something is happening in Vegas that wekend so I just moved my Navy reunion I am attending to the Rio....

I would love to see pictures of the downtown area! I don't plan on staying there but would like to see it. This is our first trip and we starting planning it two years ago but circumstances happened and we put it on the side burner. Now we are definitely going...flight is booked as are a series of house/babysitters With an 18 and 16 year old around to take care of the 11 year old, it's the house (parties) that worry me the most. clgcruiser, how did you find the weather in February?
All of the hotels that we want to stay in are over the $200 range but it's 3 nights and this is really a special trip for us...the first time EVER that we are leaving the kids behind so we are expecting to pay more for what we want. I think we've earned it....
Dawson...another question....(and thank-you for your patience ) but since you've been to Vegas so many times, what is your all time favorite hotel on the strip and why?
What a blast it must have been to be able to just spontaneously hop in the car and drive to Vegas!!
I red somewhere that nobody wears heels on the strip (unless you are "selling" something). If we wanted to go out for a nice dinner and show, what is the dress style? Especially in March...will it be cold at night?
So many questions....but I'm so excited This is replacing our cruise next year.

Thanks for the link Deb. Certainly not scorching that time of year but I'm sure there will be enough sun to raise my seratonin levels enough to face the rest of the winter when we return. .

no heels on the strip?? Thats a new one....there are so many high end clubs in the hotels now that most women out later in the evening were wearing heels, at least not in any lower ratio than I noticed elsewhere....
My all time fav hotel WAS the Sands but the Venician stands where the Sands used to....but that was Old Vegas style and the home of the brat pack with the show room named for Sinatra
These days my favs are Ceasars, MGM Grand (though it is a monstrosity of a property) and Mandalay Bay....these ar all higher end properties...
My fav mid range hotels are TI, Rio, Paris and New York, New York (mainly for watching football on the 30 ft big screen at the ESPN Zone LOL)
If I were going BIG TIME in Vegas I would look at Venician, Wynn or Mandalay Bay

And as for dressing, if your going to any of the higher end restaurants and shows or nightclubs, dress as you would if you were going to these places anywhere else...Vegas has shed its "family" atmosphere it tryed to portray in the late 80's and early 90's...
Now its all about style, high end restaurants and adult fun..I mean where else are ya gonna find topless go go dancers dancing on the bar in a club and nobody even notices them! LOL Tangerine Club in TI BTW!! LOL
If you like the food network and have any favorite chefs be sure to go eat at their places in Vegas..they mostly all have one there..some of them several..I think Emeral has 3...Bobby Flay has a good one in Ceasars.
So my "best" advise would be that if you are going to REALLY live it up (and it sounds like you are) go big, stay at a great place, have dinner at a fancy restaurant all 3 nights, go to 2 or 3 shows and hit 1 or 2 different nightclubs every night after the shows and NEVER get to bed before 4 am!
And REMEMBER..what happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas! :breakdancer:

Thanks so much for your input Dawson. Yes, we do plan to "go big" within reason. I think our first night will be a little low key due to the time difference and DH's desire to visit Hoover Dam before we get into Vegas. This will leave us with 2 full days that I want to max out. Thank-you for putting me at ease about the heels situation. I couldn't imagine dressing up for dinner without heels yet I wouldn't want anyone to misinterpret the situation
Thanks also for the info on the big chefs and the fact that they have restaurants in Vegas! DH is a huge Food Network fan so maybe I'll surprise him at one of the big chef restaurants.
Kathy....how was your last trip? Surely you must have something more to contribute to this thread
I know, I know...what happens in Vegas............
