We know some folks are having problems accessing CTT.  We have been in touch with our hosting provider and they are aware of the problem.  It is not an issue with their servers or service.  It is a broader internet backbone issue affecting other sites and many ISPs.  If you are in e-mail or phone contact with users having a problem connecting please advise them it has a known problem and is being worked on by major internet backbone provders.

Thank you for your patience and efforts to spread the word to memebers having a problem.

I have pasted some info from our hosting service below.

*******************************************************************
Members,

We are aware that some people are having an issue accessing their sites. We have recieved countless emails and support requests.

We have investigated the problem ourselves and the datacenter where our servers are located has also been involved.

After exhaustively researching the problem we have the following to report:

1. ALL of our servers ARE online.
2. We have rebooted the servers.
3. We have rebooted the domain routing services.
4. We have verified that ALL of the sites reporting "outages" ARE working and online by having friends of WowBB in different areas of the world access them.
5. The issue appears to be isolated to a ROUTING PROBLEM on ONE or MORE of the MAIN servers that "run" the internet.

The issue lies in equipment that WOWBB does not own, NOR have access to.

2 Members have contacted thier internet providers, and their providers advised the following:

..... wrote:

AT&T called me back from Cali, and said the problem is an AT&T server in 'the backbone' and that no one had any idea it was down until we called. The Michigan server cannot be re-routed to from here because they don't have that option but they promised that they are working on it and would call me back by Sunday and let me know if it got fixed. They said the AT&T server is used by all kinds of ISP's so it's a bunch of folks affected. It's NOT an ISP problem. It's a national AT&T network issue and it's apparently something serious but fixable.

...... wrote:

Ok over an hour later I finally got the final word from Qwest. There is a trunk out but they cannot trace the trunk. It's the weekend, long holiday weekend at that and the big boys aren't there until Tuesday.  They tried routing me past the outage and they can't do that either, I guess for the reasons Marty mentioned where it follows you for awhile or something. So the only resolution will be when the people with the trunk out get around to fixing it.  With the long weekend they may be in the corner watching sports or something, who know, lol.

P.S. the trunk is a 3rd party trunk

What we suggest:

1. Contact your Internet Service Provider. The more people that complain, maybe they will wake somebody up at the location above and replace the hardware.

2. Be patient.

3. Leaving your computers settings ALONE. The issue is with the INTERNET, not your computers. You may cause yourself more headaches.

What we ask you NOT to do:

1. Flood us with emails and support requests. We have done all we can, and the issue is not in OUR equipment or Software.

2. Do NOT ask your members to email us. Our support system is getting flooded with member emails trying to "bully" us into doing something. There is nothing we can do, the issue is WAY higher up the food chain then us.

We apologize that some people are having issues.  We wish we could do something to assist you, but the problem is really out of our control.

I can assure that the WowBB team has been working on this NON-Stop since it was first report. I myself have hardly slept at all.

Please check back here for any updates. When we have NEW information we will post it here. Any individual support requests, or emails will be directed to this thread for further information.

Regards,
The WowBB Support Team.

The problem still has not been resolved.  Here is an update from WowBB:

Update:

The status has not changed since the posting of this message.

We have been in contact with our data center (LiquidWeb) since this all started. At this time we have nothing indicating that there is anything different since the last message.

It is a problem affecting a lot of people, but only of they try to access certain sites.  The latest info I can find indicates that it is a problem with a server in the Detroit area.  That fits with the geographic area most of our affected users are in.  It seems to be a combination of location and ISP that determines who is affected.  There does seem to be a little finger pointing going on between AT&T and Liquidweb.

To basically describe the problem, think of the internet as a spider web, with many interconnecting routes or paths.  A server is at each juncture of this web.  If that server dies or just goes bad, it breaks the web (connection) at that juncture so nothing goes through.  Or it might just go bad and only allow certain traffic through.  That appears to be the case with this incident.  Traffic marked as going to certain destinations is stopped right at that point.  While the internet is supposed to be self healing of incidents like this, it generally takes a bit of time.  Traffic that is not allowed past a certain point, generally, and eventually, will start to seek another path and hopefully find it's destination...at least ideally it is supposed to work that way.  We are hoping the problem gets resolved without it taking that long.

The folks at WowBB are trying to fool the defective server.  This solution will cause some inconveninece for some site owners if they use a hardcoded IP address but they should know how to deal with that.  It will be a simple and seamless solution for for users...so let's hope it works. :big grin:

Here is a copy of their announcement.

Update:

Since we cannot get a resolution from AT&T or Liquid Web, we are going to take a "sidestep" action.

WowBB Hosting services is going to release the IP address on the effected server and restablish the server with a new IP address.

Our hope is that because of there being a NEW IP address the "path" to the server will be RE-created from scratch and route around the issue that we are currently experiencing.

Do to the nature of the internet this process can take 24 hours for DNS tables to update with the new address.

This is a last resort solution because many functions on the server, and some domains are pointing specifically to the current IP address.  We are hoping that these types of issues will be minor.

We understand everyone is frustrated, and do apologize for the issue. The WowBB team has been aggresively researching this issue since it was first reported. We want to assure you that we have done everything in our power to try and resolve the issue.

What were doing now is the equivilent of moving our HOUSE, because the power company cut the power line and says they didn't.  We really don't want to move our house, but need power and the power company is just too big to fight with....

Thank you for your patience. We hope to have this be behind us ALL as soon as possible.

I was one of the people who had a hard time getting in. I signed up for the free month trial at Net Zero. As long as you cancel within 30 days, you don't have to pay anything. This worked for myself and dwrist. So if you know of any member still having problems, pass this along to them.

UPDATE:

I am reading the WOW forum support boards and some people are slowly getting back into their sites. It looks like WOW boards was able to obtain another ISP addy to bypass the router or ATT is attempting to fix the problem. They are saying it could still be 24 hours before all problems are resolved.

This is a post from the web forum admin:

I am not sure which way fixed it...

I did a trace route this morning from home to the OLD IP address and it went through but did not go through any of the AT&T servers. To me that means that those AT&T servers redirected their traffic.

Either way, I am just happy people are starting to get through....
