Just returned from Brazil -- Wonderfull food -- and pretty cheap too. Beautiful places to visit. However, I would avoid the big cities, the situation in the big cities continues to be scarry to say the least -- one never knows when someone will kidnap you, your car or both.
Spent about 5 days in Brazil in 2005 and I would have to agree that Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro are not places to wander around on your own in. That being said they both have a lot to offer, just be a wise traveller when you visit.

I have not been to SA, but I know it must be a beautiful place. I have heard that the big cities are fairly crime-ridden. Did you go on a cruise, or a land vacation?
