I know someone on here is from Boston, but my feeble brain isn't remembering who.  We're doing a Canada/New England cruises that includes a stop at Boston, and we've never been there.

My current plan is to do one of the "hop on hop off" trolley tours of the Freedom trail. I realize that if you live there people who live there may never have done one, but have you heard anything good about one vs. another?  Also, is it likely to take us all day to cover the important historical sites?   Anything else that you'd recommend doing instead?

Thanks for the help!

Live just outside of Boston and I've never done the hop on hop off buses and not sure if they follow the Freedom Trail route enough to make it worth while. If you check out these websites you might be able to found out more about Boston.

Boston is a really small city and very walkable. Enjoy!

Boston is definitely a very walkable city.  If you want to take the Ho-Ho, I'd suggest the Old Town Trolley.  I believe they've been doing the tour for a number of years.  If you just would like an overview, I'd suggest taking the duck tour, and you could do a walking tour afterwards.

Just wanted to chime in that I recently walked the Freedom Trail for the first time.  We went with the guided tour and thought it was fantastic.  Our guide was very entertaining and brought to life Colonial Boston in ways that we never would have discovered on our own.

The tour takes about an hour and forty-five minutes, and leaves you at Quincy Market.  We timed it so that we had lunch there...but now wish I'd walked a little further along the trail and had lunch in the North End.

We finished the trail on our own after that...

I think Rich's suggestion of the Duck Boat tour and walking the trail is an excellent one.
