The following came to us via official channels this morning. Looks to me like it covers very specific areas, mostly border, and may not affect cruisers on W. Caribbean or Mexican Riviera cruises, with the exception of those transiting through Tijuana.

On 14 Apr 08, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert to all U.S. citizens traveling to certain areas of Mexico which include Tijuana, Nogales, Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, Acuna, Piedras Negras and Raynosa/Matamoros.  Due to combat violence, the Government of Mexico has deployed Police and Military troops to various parts of the country.  Recent fighting between the Mexican Army/Police Force and heavily armed narcotics Cartels has escalated to levels that can be construed as out of control.  Armed robberies and carjackings have significantly increased during this time.  Public shootouts have occurred during daylight hours and in some cases the assailants have worn police or military uniforms.  In 2007, dozens of U.S. citizens have been kidnapped and/or murdered in Tijuana.  USNORTHCOM has set the FPCON as BRAVO for Mexico.  Therefore the U.S. State Department urges travelers to restrict travel to these areas, unless absolutely necessary.

Don't let it stop you from going to other parts of Mexico. It's a big country.

Just stay away from the drug avenue to these United States.(Isn't that a shame?)

We were on Cozumel and I felt safer than when I am home.

I know what you mean. I also felt safe there.

What else is new?  This is very typical of Mexico and has been for at least a few

years.  There were shootouts in broad daylight in 2006, with a bullet striking

a Canadian tourist.  this happened in Acapulco.  there are assassinations a lot

down there.  20 years ago when we first started going there it didn't seem

to be a lot of fighting like it is now.  Apparently parts of Mexico are the

"new" Columbia.

My parents refused to get off the ship in Acapulco last year.  DH and I, as well

as Mr. Dawson, and several others said "screw it" and decided to live on the

edge;)

It was QUITE  a different experience visiting Acapulco in 2007 versus 1986 and

1989.  It seemed as if every single business establishment had an armed

guard outside toting what looked like an AK-47 --

I've heard Tijuana has become out of control ... that is just horrible for

the poor innocents who have to live in these conditions.

ONLY 1500 bullet casings?  Do we hear 1505?

What a damned cesspool.  I went to Tijuana in 1979 for a day.  It was actually

a bus "tour" from Disneyland.  WTF?  My mother put me in harm's way.  Bad

mama.  That was in the days when it was nothing but a bunch of cardboard

homes on the way to the main city.  it was very, very sad.  apparently

it's built up -- guess it's got that big-city feel replete with all the gang

violence too!
