Just booked Disney and staying at a place that looks like it borders Downtown Disney.

Never been there, and being it's July, we probably WON'T be going to the parks*, but whats this all about.  Some of the pix look cool.  What else is there to do around that area?

Last time we were down in Orlando in the summer, we stayed at the Caribe Royale.  Lots of water and pools, so we stayed cool.  Could see the Epcot globe from our hotel, but never ventured over.

Also never been to Universal*, so we MAY try that.  It looks close.

I am not a Disney guy, Pete, but downtown Disney is kind of cool.  There is an in-house Cirque du Soleil theatre there that I would absolutely recommend.  It is a fantastic show, that I have seen twice, first time several years ago, and again last fall when I was there for work.  There is a house of Blues there which can be good.  There is a Cuban restaurant called Bongo's owned by Gloria Estefan there, that was great the first time I went to it many years ago, and was just good the next time I went.  There is so much to see and do in Orlando.  Universal Studios Islands of Adventure is IMHO the best of the parks for rides.  The original Universal Studios is good, but not as good more out of date.  I haven't been to any of them though in a couple of years.  I am sure that if you asked Bicker he could completely hook you up for the vacation of a lifetime.  It will be hot and crowded in July at the parks.  I always go in the fall or winter.

Hey Pete! There might be a slight possibility we might be going to DW in July as well. I really don't like the idea of going in the heat but our schedules will not allow us to go in the fall. I've never been there at all and really don't know where to start planning. I know I want to stay inside the part somewhere so we can just catch the transportation there. The DH will not enjoy or be up to walking in the parks everyday so we need to stay in a good location inside the park.

Anyone have any good info to help me out??

Would be great to see ya!:P

I'm looking at some packages now that are not advertised through Disney. Anyone ever stay in any condos or Villa's within the park? There's some really good deals to be found but some are a little too good to be true.

And how the hell do you pick out which tickets to buy?>

Downtown Disney was pretty neat.  We did not spend a lot of time there and it was during the day.  We went to the Planet Hollywood.  We had some free meal coupons and then walked around a bit.  There is a game/experience type place that is 4 floors.  They have a lot of interactive stuff like cannon shooting like you are on a pirate ship and white water rafting in a real raft in front of a screen and things like that.  Make your own CD singing songs.  That was a fun place to burn a few hours.  Was it calleed DisneyQuest?  I'll check.  Your daughter will enjoy it.

DTD rocks!  That interactive place kept the kids busy all night while TW and I checked out all the clubs.  They still talk about it 2 years later.

It looks like we might be going in May, Universal this time but we will hit Downtown Disney again.

gurlwithbaggage - Prior to discovering cruising, I vacationed at Disney World almost every year. My opinion on the best area to stay on property would be the EPCOT/MGM area. Two of the best Disney hotels, Beach Club & Boardwalk, are there However, I usually stay at the Swan or Dolphin; you get most of the benefits of staying on property but at a much lower cost. You can't beat the location.  You can either take a boat ride or walk to MGM & EPCOT and you have the restaurants at 4 hotels to choose from. You have to take a bus to Magic Kingdom & Animal Kingdom but they run pretty regularly.

If you want to stay in a villa or condo, you can save a lot of money by purchasing the timeshare points from an owner who won't use them.  I subscribed to a Disney guide that gives the specifics on how to do this but I can't post the link on a public forum. A co-worker's daughter did this last year and saved  almost $2,000. If you want to know more, leave me a PM and I can give you the link to the guide.

If you have any other qustions about WDW, I'd be happy to help you.

Our last two Disney stays, we stayed at the Polynesian.  This was the land part of a land/sea Disney cruise.

People had advised us as to how convenient it was to be on the Monorail run, and boy were they right!  We could get to both the Magic Kingdom and Epcot very easily.  We did have to take a bus over to MGM (not one of our favorites), and then we went to Animal Kingdom from where we were transported to the ship.  But the busses were frequent.

We got a bonus when we went on Sept 12, 2002, as the parks were EMPTY!  No one was flying the year after the attacks.  We walked up to every ride with no lines.  We got to do all four parks and all the attractions in 3 1/2 days.

We repeated the trip a year and a half later, with DW's extended family.

Hey Pete.  Is that a private plane in the album?  I was going to stay here for a conference last year, but didn't end up going.  We are looking to possibly going in November again, but doing mostly Universal and Sea World and a couple of Disney days.  I would like to skip Disney prices.  I was looking at Hard Rock Hotel.  You get some Universal benefits staying there.

The place at DTD was DisneyQuest.  It was a lot of fun for kids and adults.  Chekc that out and you will lose yourself for a few hours.

Paul...

No, it was commercial.  I guess there's not a lot of traffic between West Palm Beach and Grand Bahama.

DW was freaking out when she saw it, but boarded anyway.   :P

i am at coronado springs in 3 weeks.  so, if anyone wants info on that, i'd be happy to post when i return.

truthfully, i wish i was goin to universal and staying at hard rock instead.  i like it a lot better down there, and mardi gras starts on 2/2 and shld be great.  but...we already have disney tickets...10 day no expiration park hoppers that we use for quick jaunts throughout the year.

may still go to city walk sat night anyway, as we had no plans to go to disney that day, except small possiblity to drink around the world at epcot sat night, lol. (there are a bunch of us going).

the separate lines ALONE for every ride make the price of hard rock, portofino or royal pacific WELL worth the price, not to mention that they are all great hotels, and...you can walk to and from everywhere (including citywalk) from each of them.
