Research is high on my list of things to do when preparing for a cruise to foreign ports. Guidebooks are naturally a good place to start, as is the Internet. However, one of the best sources of information is someone who's already been there. In my case, I began my research for a cruise to South America in my own kitchen by interviewing my husband. Mel has traveled extensively throughout South America for the past decade.
These are Mel Coffman's tips for cruise passengers visiting South America and particularly Brazil:

just ran into the T.A in the driveway, she has a sweet little cruise for us...
South America, air, hotel, ? 18 days- Discovery. Must go online and check this one out. I would love South America, but really would like to see the northern Caps first.

Did I read that right? This starts in Portugal? I've been doing a lot of reading. It sounds like a very good place to start! Naaaah, you aren't that old.

I'd agree with that. Maybe that's the clientele they're trying to attract. Almost dead.

| If any of you are thinking of a South American cruise - GO FOR IT as to date that is the best vacation we have ever done. Loved every minute of the 28 day cruise + our add on at the end in Argentina to go visit Iguazu Falls. I have a review of this trip and a list of all the tour guides I used - did all private excursions that I found organized and booked via the internet - and I can recommend all of these guides. They were great....Unfortunately my info may be a little dated now as we went in Jan 2005.

Anything you would like to share would be helpful! You could post the whole review in our review section: http://cruisetraveltalk.com/forum11/
Or add tips in this forum, the tour guides forum or whever you think they fit best.
