Sheila,
When we were there, we did the excursion to Capri. We loved it!!!!
And as jc says, the roads over there are tiny and windy and they are PACKED with cars and tour buses.
When we were in Italy a few weeks ago, there was an excursion to the Amalfi coast one day. We did not go, but when everyone got back that evening, most everyone was pissed off. They said they had spent most of the day sitting in a bus, because the traffic was so bad. They actually got back to the hotel 3 hours late because of traffic!!!!!!

Denise, if you go back, I think the best way to do the Amalfi coast with very limited time is via the ferries and hydrofoils and not via the roads.  If you are going to do Amalfi via land then a week is my minimum time frame.  I love Amalfi, but the roads are not conducive to speed, and as Denise stated, a bus tour on those roads will never have me as a passenger!!!!!

just caught a short documentary on MtVesiuvius.. interesting. It is building, and they say when it does blow it will be catastrophic, the magma rivers etc below are deep and big, they are confident that they will be able to predict when it will blow to get the huge population out.... ya right!

We've schedule a morning excursion to Pompeii through the ship, then return to Naples around lunch time.  Does anyone know a good, clean, place in Naples to sit and eat pizza and drink the rest of the afternoon?

We saw a Samantha Brown 'Passport to Europe' on Naples last week and were a bit shocked that she had to struggle so much to find good things to say about it.  Our impression was overcrowded and dirty - not like what we were expecting.  For those who have been there, what did you think of the city?

Hmmm that just about sums it up.....:big grin:
This might be a possibility... outside Pompeii is a market area called ?? Scavi?
There is a hotel there, that has open air tables etc. (really clean washrooms), you could tell your tour guide that you are going to cab it back to port rather than continue with the bus??? It might be a little costly though.
It is a rather nice hotel, and the food is good. It is right at the entrance to Pompeii proper.

Unfortunately, this is one of the few excursions we are doing on the trip that is through the cruise line.  They will take up back to the ship.  Maybe we need to catch a cab in the afternoon to somewhere on the outskirts of the city to have a late pizza lunch.....

Yes  Cruise Cat there is a quaint , very quaint little restaurant at the bottem of Mount Vesuvius ( if this is your excursion). Let the athletes do the climb ( show offs!) and settle in with the "fun group"on the outside patio as you wait for the fools. They serve a terrific local wine from grapes grown on the side of the old volcano and chilled Lemoncello from the lemon orchards around Naples. We had a hoot . The two young Napolese owners were hilarious and might I say none too shabby to look at!
There's a gift shop that sells Volcanic rocks so you can buy a few and lie all you want when you get home about conquering the mountain.:angeldevil1:
I think the restaurant Seawitches is referring to is at the Pompeii Ruins and of the two it is the best spot for a decent lunch. Might be a wise idea to get a bit of food in the stomach before the tour of the ruins especially after all that lemoncello!:P
We just did a drive by of Naples and they were in the midst of their perennial garbage strikes and from the bus window it looked like just another rather dirty busy industrial city.

Hotel Ristorante Vittoria
Piazza Porta Marina, 1, 80045 Pompeii

This is it, but it is at Pompeii. Which is a good 40 min drive to port.
