Been reading that Naples, is a nasty city. Dirty, and crime ridden.
Any comments?? Should we do our own thing there, or go to Capri? maybe Pompei? or just plain "get outta Dodge"??

Personally, if it were me, I'd go to Pompeii. But just in case, here are some things to do in all three places.
Naples

Capri

Pompeii looks amazing, it's huge! They say that Herculeum is better preserved, and if you do one, you don't need to do the other. This would be an excursion where those good shoes come in handy.
Mt Vesuvius is considered an active volcano still, but hasn't erupted since 1944. It is a national park, and has hiking trails. The pics from this area are quite impressive with the volcano in the background.
Cqpri looks like it's a sit and have a couple of martinis and people watch, cruise thru a few high end designer shops, hob nob with the rich and famous

Sheila
We drove by Napoli, but didn't stop. Our friends flew into Napoli and spent a couple of days there. The National museum has most of the artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum so if you want to see the artifacts and not the buildings it is a must see. We drove from our villa to Pompeii one morning, and spent a few hours there, and then ate lunch at a marginal little bar across from the main entrance, then we drove over to Herculaneum and toured it. Both sites are relatively close to each other probably a 10 to 15 minute drive thru city streets. At Herculaneum it is really surrounded by the modern city just off the beach. Both sites are different, Pompeii is a much larger site, Herculaneum is more compact really about 3 or 4 city blocks in size. The buildings are better preserved at Herculaneum. We didn't hike on Versuvius, but it is an impressive volcano. Capri is an island resort, that is about a 40 minute ferry ride from Naples, we took a ferry from Amalfi and spent the afternoon there, it is a beautiful spot with a ton of highend stores. We had the best gelato ever there on the upper section at a fancy hotel. It is more of a resort island and does not have the historical fascination of Pompeii and Herculaneum, however it is a very nice place to spend time.

We did Pompei on our first trip. Very interesting, but make sure you either get the audio at the entrance, or go with a guide.
Second trip was the Amalfi Coast tour. WOW!!! Now, THAT'S a drive, and don't do it yourself!
We never made it into Naples either time. Too much to see outside the city.

Peggy did you read my reviews and comments about our week in a villa on the Amalfi coast? The drive is amazing, and they need to outlaw tourist buses! I would be an ok drive if there were no buses or trucks. If you are interested you might check it out.
I am someday going to have to figure out how to post the video my buddy Shelby took with the video cam hanging out the window as we drove the 10 minute drive from the villa into the nearby village of maiori for groceries.

No, I didn't see the review. I know the buses must be irritating to locals and autos. However, I would be terrified to make that drive in a car, even with DH who drives a Cobra and is my hero!!!
Gimme a link.

It's a pretty one, too. Yeah, we have LOTS of best friends when he's driving that car. Our yougest DS said leave it to him and give his older bro more money!! I said "you assume there will BE money to leave". It's a clone, which is made according to exact specs, but no original id number. Fun car!
I'll go read the review. Thanks!

| Other than value, it is probably better to have a clone. The originals are usually beaten to death or priceless. It would look very nice next to my MINI in the garage.

Hahahahahahahaha, jc. Is the Mini your avatar?
If it's an original Mini, my DH loves them....and Anglia's, which you can't get anymore. If we make it to England next year, he's dying to rent a SmartCar.
We were in Tenerife on our b2b on the Splendour about 4 years ago. He found a SmartCar parked on the street, went to a garbage can, found a clean box, broke it down, put it on the ground, and laid on his back under that SmartCar for about 45 minutes. Wants one very badly, but he says they will goober them up if they sell in the U.S.
Can you tell he's a retired mechanic?

I loved our day trip to Capri when we were there 4-5 years ago. I bought a pair of leather sandals there and have loved them!

think we've been talked into leaving Naples, and taking the hydro foil to Capri.
Now trying to calculate time for renting a scooter on Capri, or do we forget that, and try to get back on mainland to quickly see Hurculaneum?
Decided Pompeii too big, so Hurculaneum will fill the bill. Can't be there without seeing it partially.
Ship in port at 0700-1800.
Can this be done in the time frame????

| What is the hydrofoil schedule? Skip the scooter on Capri. Just get off the hydrofoil by tickets for the funicular and take it up to the top of the mountain, and check out the town. If you want to do a trip, hire a boat to the blue grotto and you can see most of the island from the water. Herculaneum is very nice, and compact and in many ways a more interesting place to visit than Pompei. Figure a couple of hours minimum there. I am a bit concerned about being able to do both and to get back to the ship in time. Where is the next port of call and when in case you miss it? Getting stuck there overnight and taking the train to the next port wouldn't be a tragedy as long as it is only one night to the next port. We didn't do the hydrofoil while we were there, but we watched the one from Salerno to Capri from our villa a couple of times a day, we did the regular slow ferries.

Wow a lot more run from Naples than Salerno. Should be a piece of cake. How are you going to get to Herculaneum from Naples? Is there a ships tour in the afternoon to Herculaneum? I might go that route so I could gaurantee catching the ship at the end of the day. Then figure how much time you can spend in Capri.
It is really too bad the cruise ships don't overnight in the Amalfi area.

JC says......."oh my god woman, hurry up and take the frkn cruise, you're driving me nuts"....... today's dilemna. Doc at work says "Sparky, forget Naples and Capri, you've gotta see Positano / Sorrento and the Amalfi coast"....so I'm back to research.
Preparing for this cruise is exhausting, but lots of fun. I've learned a ton.
Tonight how to use an Italian phone card.

I don't disagree with your Doc, Sheila. But remember you have one day and not all of one day. You are going to get a taste of whatever you do. Capri is mentioned in the first 30 minutes of Ben Hur. You don't get more historical than Ben Hur! Pompei is an event in history that in 79 AD nobody really noted, but in 2006 it is one of the most momentus moments in history. How can you miss these things? I agree with the Doc that the Amalfi coast is a place that I will return to again and again. I don't think it lends itself to a one day trip with deadlines on both ends. The roads are a nightmare. Truly! Read my Italy trip again, and me driving. The roads are exactly so many feet wide and buses and cars on those roads do not fit. You are going to be stuck on a bus doing tiny roads with a ton of traffic! Think about it. Amalfi, is best enjoyed during the shoulder season and not the peak season as the roads are just stupid. In my opinion a week is the minimum for the Amalfi coast. The towns of Positano, Ravello, and others are neat, but there is nothing in these towns that is OMG it is fun and neat, but not OMG. They are charming and fascinating, but initial views of them are not Roma like or Paris like. I will be very sad when your trip is done because you are the only one who fires the ole neurons on a wonderful vacation.
Love you!

Caught a quick show this am on Pompei and Herculaneum (it was good), and since Vesiuvious is still an active volcano, and expected to erupt (not known when), thought I 'd post this link. It's hard to imagine an area that is so old is still young enough to have so many earthquakes.
