My European trips have all been land based living off the economy so I've always just exchanged money as we needed it.   My daughter and family are doing the NCL 7 day out of Spain in October which I believe has a stop in France and a couple in Italy.

Can anyone who's done this tell me the how the exchange rate on ship vs at the airport has been and about how many Euros you have needed at the ports?

With the rate as bad as it is, I want them to have enough but don't want them to buy way too many and have to pay the larger fees to change back if they would end up with a bunch.

Depending on their bank's charges, their best bet may be to just take money at foreign ATMs as they need it. Our bank does not charge for ATM usage worldwide, and you get the best exchange rate vs. the markups from the currency exchange places and the ship.

RnE the best exchange rates are found by using the banks ATM machines.  We did a cruise that started in Southampton UK and had port stops in Spain, Portugal, Madeira and the Canary Islands.  I probably never had more than 100 euros, and outside of small trinkets, virtually everyone takes Mastercard or Visa.  It is best to just make one big euro withdrawal to minimize the $3 fee or whatever you get charged for using an out of network ATM.  Remember, all credit card companies (except Capital One that I know of ) charge a 3% foreign exchange fee.  I would get a Capital One credit card if only for travel overseas.

On our summer land vacation last month, we withdrew money about 4 times to get euros and swiss francs.

On another note, one of my lake buddies was in my office today and I asked him about the Altenhof, and he was like O, it is great, I love Gertrude.  Whereupon I ripped him, then why the hell haven't you ever mentioned it to me before.  He said there is definitely no boat dock and it would be a heck of a walk.  Thanks for the recommendation!
