I know.  Scary isn't it?:big grin:

My niece who's in her 3rd year at University of Guelph is doing a semester in Paris along with a prof and 32 fellow students.  My brother-inlaw and the triplets are over there visiting her right now.  I'm so envious.

makes sense Deb.

Guelph University is one of the largest Vet Universities and Agricultural Universities in North America is not bigger.

Lots of bull semen needed for research here?? They do all animals, large and small.

It's a wonderful school.

Being a vet school, they may have their own herd of cattle, do research involving artificial insemination and bovine diseases and improving carcasses. Beef! It's what's for dinner! ;)

damn it all pearl get with the program...

ok, the bus is good... why you might add (ok, not you, but others would).

It drops us off in Place de Concorde, which faces Champes Elsyes (my favorite perfume), to the west is Arc d'Trimophe (get over the spelling), to the east is Lovre, and NOtre Dame is walkable, walk east from Louvre cross the bridge and you're there. The Eiffel we'll need a taxi........ I think.

who cares what you have on your back....... if it's drop dead gorgeous, it'll look like shit by the time some one sees the walking shoes.......... so forget it.

ivory jeans, white blouse, black suit jacket, nice scarf, bandana and big designer sunglasses, Lancome lipstick, and a Coach purse. Viola!

found the train that everyone talks about, but no one could remember what it was called etc.... this is much better, link for timetable etc

LeHavre to Paris direct.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://bonjourlafrance.net/france-trains/tgv-mediterranean/schedules/images/marseille-lyon-rouen-le-havre.jpg&imgrefurl=http://bonjourlafrance.net/france-trains/tgv-brittany/schedules/alps-marseille-lyon-rouen-le-havre.htm&h=568&w=399&sz=36&hl=en&start=12&tbnid=G7XIHfF8ZylG_M:&tbnh=134&tbnw=94&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dle%2Bhavre%2Bto%2Bparis%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:*%26sa%3DX

Getting To Paris: Le Havre's train station is about a mile from the port though, in most cases, passengers will have to take the shuttle from the ship to the center of Le Havre and then a taxi to the station (or take a taxi directly from the port to the station). Trains run to Gare St-Lazare (Paris) roughly every hour; at press time, ideal morning departures were limited to 7:56 or 10 a.m.; returns from Paris, depending on ship's sailaway schedule, include 4:48, 5:58 and 6:40 p.m. For more information contact RailEurope.com (800-942-4866).

this info seems consistant with what I have been finding

I can't find any other train service. The above link is really convoluted, and difficult to get exact info. I did have it last night, but was too huge to copy here. But from what I can find there is no train that can do the route to Paris under two hours, and some trains involve a transfer in Rouen. Rue St Lazare is the common point (station) in Paris tho, and it is in the general vicinity of where we would want to be. Too far to walk tho?

Will see how far the train station in Le Havre is from the port.

From what I can determine the Le Havre train station is a minimum of 20 min from port via taxi or port shuttle.

(ship  arrive 0700    depart 1900  @ Le Havre) will need time to clear customs

bus excursion departs 0745   arrives back at ship 1815

arrive Paris  1045 in the location we want to be

leave Paris 1515 from where we are. total time on the ground in Paris = 4.5 hours

__________________________________________________________

(ship arrive 0700   departs 1900 @ Le Havre) will need time to clear customs

clear customs? 0730

taxi to train station 0750

train to Paris (2 hours)  arrive Paris at Lazare Station 1000

subway to Le Place de Concorde  1015

subway to Lazare1530

train to Le Havre 1600

taxi to ship 1815

total time in Paris = 5 hours.

OMG........... I dont' believe I have done this.. Does this make me a Type A personality???  Am I too anal:nono:

Ok Pearl, you've been elected to brush up with the Big guy on your french. Your DH can handle the espanol, I'll take the Portugese, Italian and Dutch. It may all come out like German, but I can fake anything.  I'll be able to give you a hand with the parlez vois francais, but when it comes to bargains with $$ you're on your own.

Oh, and added to the list for DD, designer sun glasses and a new leather wallet.(the list grows as we speak)

My Paris Adventure

I Arrived on Christmas morning and woke up sister wearing my Santa hat bearing gifts from back home. Stayed in her hotel room drinking duty free vodka from catching up since last seeing her 5 months ago.  I slept and then we ventured out at evening and walked around Galleries Lafayette looking at the bright lights and window displays...Went to bed early as most everything was closed.  Got up the next morning and walked 15 miles around Paris getting the lay of the land and looking for romance (we describe romance as “the pulse of the city”).  We saw the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, the Bastille area, and got lost.  Sister made the decision to drink our way back home through the pubs/brasseries.  We concluded that nobody liked to talk in these places.  Most seemed to just stare.  Maybe it was the time of year?

On the way back we visited Notre Dame Cathedral and were sad…it was not well taken care of.  Jesus would have been mad to see all the trinkets/requests for Euros for this and that.  We considered kicking down the stands as Jeses did but we did not think the French police would understand.  We considered going to confession but we had to pay for that too.  We did not have enough Euro on us as we thought the priest would charge per sin.  Ate at some café and bought supplies (water/fruit/bread/ham/cheese/wine) at a grocery store for the week.  Our supplies lasted into the next day.  I found a hair salon and got my hair cut.  Drank our way back home while still searching for the romance.  We still were not feeling it.  Went to bed early.

Day three we walked to the Champs D’Elysees and climbed to the top of L’Arc de TriumphWe scared a little kid and other tourists who did not find us as funny as we thought we were.  We considered walking over to the EiffelTower but only could see ½ of it as it was always covered in fog.  We toasted to great grand-father who helped build the tower.  Walked to the Seine’s south bank and looked in the windows of shops and art galleries. Payed 8 Euro to take a one hour boat tour on the River Seine.  Sister found out there was no bar on board so she encouraged me to jump ship.  The only places to sit were in a crowded covered area or an open top where it rained.  We got off at the last minute and waved good-bye to the Asian tourists packed like sardines on board.  We drank our way back home.

That evening sister’s military friends from Northern Europe arrived and they took us out to dinner…a true French restaurant called Flo. We dad an excellent meal…filet mignon, lobster, oysters, pate’, champagne, wine, etc.  The restaurant was brightly lit, the waiters and customers friendly, and the table crowded…for the first time people talked to us.  After dinner we went to The Buddha Bar.  One round (a beer and three double vodkas) cost 114 Euro (about 145 American dollars) each.  We had three rounds and which totaled 1/3 of the money I brought for the week! Got back home late…still not feeling any romance for Paris.

Friends drove us to Versailles the next day to see Louis XIV’s castle. The size was extremely impressive as was the size of the line to get in.  There had to be about 2,000 people waiting in the cold.  We opted to walk around the gardens and look into the windows instead.  Drove around other areas of Paris and most districts looked similar. ]We stopped for lunch at a nice café.  Sister and I had French onion soup while her Euro-friends ate raw hamburg mixed with raw egg (steak tartare). ]We warned them how they could become sick eating that and we would not consider eating that in America…we told them of our growing up days when our mama would let us eat a rolled up raw hamburg ball before she put the meatloaf in the oven…what was she and they thinking?

We were dropped off at hotel and took nap. Met up with them later and sister treated us to dinner at ManRay…actually called MandalayRay…a restaurant/bar owned by Johnny Depp and Sean Penn.  Had a four hour meal…I had sea bass…and everyone liked the meal while listening to a piano player play a variety of tunes.  The atmosphere was nice but we still were not feeling the romance…Finished the evening at a bar called Bound located on a side street of the Champs D’Elysees.  Had a special bound cocktail and gagged.  It was a sugar drink made with whole frozen berries melted.  We drank it anyway.  Said good-bye to sister’s friends who had to leave the next morning.  We left concluding to ourselves that “their” Paris did not even compare to “ourMontreal!

We got a good night’s sleep and I woke up the next morning peeing poop….or pooping like pee…whatever it was, it did not seem right! This occurred for about 12 hours.  I made sure to stay hydrated and I ate a little bit of food to bind me up.  I was thankful I did not throw up or have cramps.  Sister had new miltary friends coming in that evening from Germany. I was well enough to meet them at their hotel bar and we had a nice time sitting and talking and drinking.  A bathroom was nearby and our hotel was nearby so I was fine.  The next plan included meeting up with some marines in an Irish bar or a Canadian Moose Bar on the south bank of the river.  I felt hot and sweaty on the subway.  We stopped to buy cigarettes and I thought I was going to pass out from the heat in the store.  I told sister I was going to go back to hotel  because I did not want to get sick.  I told her to stay with her friends.  She told me to suck it up, there are bathrooms all over the place.  I said okay…

Went to bathroom in a hot sweaty Irish bar.  No marines.  Went to hot sweaty Canadian Moose bar and found their marine friends.  Took three drags of a cigarette ...thought I was going to pass out…started to feel everything slip away…grabbed onto sister’s arm and told her I was going faint…I fought it.  I fought it some more until I felt marines holding me up and sitting me in a chair.  Some thought I was having seizure.  Some probably thought I was drunk.  My sister did not know what to think.  I thought I had shit my pants.  I told her I was going to the bathroom and I was definitely taking a cab back home when I returned.  She replied she suddenly did not feel good either.  She looked white as a ghost.  She was just worried for her baby sister.  She is not used to seeing me hurt.  When we were little, our mother used to pass out whenever us kids got injured

I am in the bathroom over 15 minutes and I hear banging on the door…it is sister…she is sweating. She passed out walking down the stairs to bathroom…shoved me off the john and proceeds to piss poop or to poop like pee.  Whatever it was, it just wasn’t right.  She says she is going to faint…she starts to shake…I help her.  Who is going to help me I wondered.  I snap out of my trance and take care of her.  When we were finished and slapping cool water on our faces, I asked her if she was feeling the romance of Paris yet…we laughed and laughed and then fought for the bathroom.  Later, a]s the marines put us into a cab, they told us that we were a lot of fun to go out with…Surviving the cab ride back to hotel, we slept for 17 hours.  Well, slept and crapped 17 hours.

We awoke feeling great. We concluded the cold French onion soup was the only thing the two of us ate similar.  We had sent it back and they must have re-heated it.  Sister’s friend’s father said that was a breeding ground for bacteria.  Lesson learned.  I concluded it was Paris getting back at us for “dissing” it so much!

We were starving.  Today was our New Year’s Eve (the thirtieth).  We ventured out to find the Rex nightclub.  We took the subway.  Got on it and the car was full of passengers…they were quiet.  Suddenly we heard music…a solo saxophonist…playing quietly.  I whispered to sister, “now THAT is romantic!”  His next tune was Hello Dolly.  Nobody talking.  I could not bear it anymore.  I was feeling great and started singing the words.  Sister joined me.  We sang the entire song and got the people smiling and laughing.  We got off just in time for the end…did not wait to listen for the applause…

We Walked around the Bonne Nouveau area and found the club but it seemed like a seedy part of townNo nightclubbing here tonight…walked back to hotel and met up with one of sister’s Euro-friends.  We walked Rue Rivoli, bought hot chocolate at Angelina’s and bought lots of Parisian perfume.  We visited a Polish church and the St. German church.  We ate at a fabulous French restaurant on St. Germain called Lipp. Everyone was friendly there.  The waiters were as French as we are crazy.  Even the French diners who spoke to us there agreed…that the waiters were French looking!  For some reason this was my best meal and I concluded how lucky were we to have two romantic experiences one right after the other!

Friend went back to hotel and sister and I visited St. Madeleine church, around the corner from our hotelThis was the best church we concluded.  Although no steeple…it was beautiful.  Who was St. Madeleine we asked?  The answer was Mary Magdalene!  Oh my gosh, she is the patron saint of all the sisters!  She is the cool one in the bible!  How romantic to have this church next to us!  Even better there was a concert that evening given by a famous French violinist Frederic Moreau or it was Marceau…he was famous by age 12…we bought two tickets for his show that evening.

We were feeling wonderful during the concert. We listened to Vivaldi, Pachabel, Mozart and Bach while sitting in the candle-offering area of Mary and the Baby Jesus.  I put my arm around sister and told her this was one of the most romantic experiences/day ever!  Could Paris get any better than this? ]We did not think so.  We were joyous at the concerts conclusion and gladly paid the 30 Euro for 2 of Moreau’s cds…Instead of listening to trance music on my way to work, I now listen to beautiful sounds of violins…

After the concert we met up with sister’s military friends at a nearby Jazz Club on Danoue Street called The Sherwood. The bar was crowded and the music was awesome.  Sister’s friends met three Parisian gals and they too were friendly to us.  Wow…French people talking to us, let alone sharing a table!  Everyone in the jazz bar was happy!  I was feeling better.  I was feeling the pulse of the city...I was feeling the romance… I was feeling the music....I was feeling like me!  The American on vacation!  The band played a jazzy song with bongos that sounded Caribbean. I was consumed with happiness as I found the only open spot in the bar.  I got up and showed everyone how I could shake my hips like Shakira…how I could dance Jamaican…how I was tired of all people just sitting around in café’s all week staring at each other not talking to each other…how I had 2.5 days left and was going to dance my way to the end of it!  There was applause at the end of the song and then others got up to dance too.  I was sitting near the exit and as people left, they thanked me.  I was feeling very proud.  This was a great day.  I thought it was all going to be over because it was now 1am. Not so.

We received an offer to go to a club called Monte Cristo which was located at the Marriott on the Champs D’ElyseeWe all accepted.  As we walked over we saw the EiffelTower all lit up for the first time. ]The Christmas lights on the Champs were all lit up.  This was beautiful!  What a great romantic view!  This entire day was the best day ever!  Upon arrival to Monte Cristo, we paid 150 Euro for four of us, that included one bottle of vodka, all the mixers, and a table, we realized it was a Middle Eastern clientele bar.  I thought at first this could not be good…Saddam Hussein was hung that very morning…do not tell anyone I am with Army and Marines…then I realized most of the patrons were Iranian as they smoked their hookas upstairs while dancing to a wide range of dance music downstairs.  Some other Americans were in the club and some were retired military.  Everybody loved my sister and her friends.  The non-stop champagne bottles flowed to our table and we danced until 6 in the morning.  Well, sister and her friends talked with everyone until 6 in the morning…I danced and danced and danced until 6 in the morning.  It took us six days to find the romance but we finally found it with one day left to go.

We were up by 3pm on New Years Eve day and sister and I had our last meal together at a nearby restaurant called The American Dream. ]It was a funky bar with true American entrees.  A little bit of this and a little bit of that.  Hamburgers and ice cream sundaes too!  I cried and told her that I loved her.

We went back home, I packed and then we slept for three hours. We awoke at 10pm and got ready to head to the Champs D’Elysees for midnight…a place we were warned to stay away from. We arrived with our vodka leftover from the night before.  Hey, somebody in that bar paid 150 Euro for it.  You do not think I was going to leave it there for them to re-sell do you?  We poured it in 2 water bottles and heading out.  We found people from all over the world partying in the streets with their champagne bottles.  The entire Champs de L'ysees was closed off to traffic.  We met people from Argentina, Morocco, Spain, Algeria, China, Australia, Sweden and many other places. We wished them all a happy new year and everyone was joyeous. ]We were feeling the romance still!  We took pictures of tourists with their cameras, we got in on pictures, and we even bid the French police in their riot gear a happy new year.  I even kissed the cute police who agreed when I asked.  Well, they all agreed.  It was either my good looks or my story that my retired police officer hubby could not be with me and would they substitute…

By 1am I was ready to be the good girl and go home as I had to be at the airport at 11am the next morning. Then we saw the Monte Cristo again.  I agreed to stop in in order to say goodbye to sister’s friends who booked their New Year’s Eve there.  So we went in and surprised them as they thought we would not go.  We ended up dancing again…well, I ended up dancing again until 4am. Sister and I walked home and upon leaving…we noticed a quite different crowd from four hours earlier.  The tourists were gone.  The intoxicants were all out.  The immigrants who could not afford the club scene were out.  As we walked, we watched the cute police have to take down some unruly youngsters.  We concluded the French police were even more romantic than before.  Ay yiy yiy.  They had some suave moves.  Who needs a gun when you have a thick bullet proof plastic shield that can drop a vagrant like a swatted fly?

I was in bed at 4am and up four hours later. Just enough sleep to survive the 26 hour journey home.  Sister and I concluded that we would return to Paris...but in nicer weather.  We figured out the romance. We enjoyed exploring the city together and we laughed all week.  We even laughed about getting sick and realized what a fun story it was going to be to tell!  We also decided next New Year’s was going to be someplace warm.  Rio De Janeiro anyone?

Coka, that sounds wonderful! What an interesting time you sisters had in Paris! Maybe our other two sisters will enjoy it as much.

They will as long as they stay away from the French Onion Soup!

Oh my, it took longer to edit my cutting and pasting than it did to write the darn thing!  It came out odd when I first put it on here...lots of wierd letters and words in-between the text.
