My bet is more cruise lines will follow Celebrity on this new policy for which I'm glad.

Celebrity Cruises Revamps Smoking Policy

First premium cruise line to join trend toward cleaner-air environment

MIAMI, April 10, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Cruise enthusiasts may praise the virtues of "sea air," but to many of them, what matters more is clean air. As more hotels and restaurants worldwide implement stricter smoking policies in order to promote healthier air, Celebrity Cruises also is taking action. Beginning October 1, 2008, guests on Celebrity's ships will enjoy fresher air as a result of a new policy that disallows smoking in Celebrity's staterooms or on stateroom verandas. The policy also will reduce the number of public areas in which guests can smoke onboard. "We are proud to be the first premium cruise line to set a new standard toward creating an environment of cleaner air on our ships," said Celebrity Cruises President & CEO Dan Hanrahan. "We pay careful attention to what our guests have to say, and approximately 90 percent of them have told us they are non-smokers. By increasing the number of smoke-free areas onboard while still designating areas for those who smoke, our aim is to make the onboard experience as pleasant as possible for all of our guests."
The new policy, created after Celebrity polled past guests, will result in a cleaner, fresher and healthier environment on Celebrity's ships. Designated indoor areas where guests can smoke cigarettes include the port side of one lounge per ship and a designated slot machine area in each ship's casino. The new policy also designates outdoor areas where guests can smoke. These include the port side of the pool deck and sundecks on each ship, the port side of the Sunset Bar on Celebrity Century and on Celebrity's Millennium class of ships, and the port side aft outside of Winter Garden on Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Mercury. Celebrity's new Solstice class of ships, launching with Celebrity Solstice late this year, will follow the new policy beginning with the first sailing. Celebrity Solstice's Lawn Club and the Sunset Bar at the Lawn Club will not allow smoking. Violations to Celebrity's smoking policy may result in a $250 cleaning fee charged to the guest's onboard account and may also be addressed through the line's guest conduct policy.
The new policy will go into effect on Celebrity's fleet on the first day of the first sailing to follow October 1:
-- Celebrity Galaxy, Celebrity Infinity, Celebrity Mercury - October 3
sailings

-- Celebrity Summit - October 4 sailing

-- Celebrity Constellation - October 5 sailing

-- Celebrity Century, Celebrity Millennium - October 6 sailings

-- Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox - upon ship launch
Celebrity currently allows guests to smoke in staterooms, on stateroom verandas and in a number of indoor and outdoor public spaces. The exception is Celebrity Xpedition, the 92-person mega-yacht sailing year-round in the Galapagos Islands, which operates under a stricter policy than the rest of the fleet, allowing smoking only on the ship's outer decks, in designated areas.
Celebrity Cruises offers comfortably sophisticated, upscale cruise experiences with highly personalized service, exceptional dining, and extraordinary attention to detail. Celebrity sails in Alaska, Australia/New Zealand, California, Canada/New England, the Caribbean, Europe, Galapagos Islands, Hawaii, the Pacific Coast, Panama Canal and South America. The line also offers unique cruisetour vacations in Alaska, Australia, Canada, Europe and South America. Noted for "The Top Cruise Ships in the World," as voted by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler (February 2008 readers' poll), Celebrity's current fleet will be joined by Celebrity Solstice in 2008, Celebrity Equinox in 2009, Celebrity Eclipse in 2010, and a fourth Solstice-class ship in 2011. I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. If they won't even allow people to smoke on their verandah, there's no need for us to even book that class again.

Well, the anti-smoking crowd over on the dark side are posting with glee and hoping that RCI will follow suit. Don't see it happening anytime soon, but you never know.

Well I can take another cruise line off my list. As long as I still have choices I will spend my money elsewere. I wsa really thinking about the Solstice next year. At least unlike Oceania they will still have smoking in some public areas other then the smoking lounge

I think it all depends on how it goes with Celebrity. I am one that is hoping that it moves over to RCI. Eventually all the major cruise lines will get on board with this policy. It's only a matter of time and it's about time.

Too bad.  Celebrity had the best food of the lines I've sailed (Carnival, Holland America, NCL and Celebrity).  Fortunately the food was still pretty decent on the other lines.  If this keeps up though I'll have to start vacationing on land.  Back to Vegas I guess. ;)

I'd have no problem with them banning smoking in all inside areas and cabins, but when they include verandahs I think they are going too far. Most people spend a realatively short amount of time on their verandahs smoking, and with the ship moving at 20+ knots, smoke tends to vanish rapidly. Only time will tell if Celebrity wil benefit from this policy. If non-smokers flock to their ships in greater numbers than smokers leave, then they should reap the profits of what would seem to be a sound business decision.

As a non-smoker, I agree with Gordon.  But, the non-smoking ship, Paradise, didn't last very long. When smokers find out they can't smoke in their cabin or their balcony, they will most likely go to another cruise line that still does allow smoking.
Personally, I hope they do well and that RCI does follow suit. I guess only time will tell.

Speaking as a non-smoker, because of this new rule, I will give Celebrity my business if the itineraries and pricing are similar.  I like having a balcony, but am unable to use it a lot of the time if my neighbors in the next cabin are out there smoking.

I just got back last night from an 11-day cruise & I had neighbors on both side of me that smoked, plus one on the deck above me. Almost every time I was out there enjoying the sea & the fresh air, they were on their balcony smoking and I ended up having to go back in my cabin to get away from the smoke and the ashes. :shoot me:

Welcome back Denise. I am sorry you didn't get to enjoy your balcony more. How was the trip?

The cruise was great, Tim!  It was our last sailing on Brilliance of the Seas, as they are relocating her permanently to The Med.  We had great weather and a good breeze the days we were at sea.
I thought the food was a bit better this year than the last 2 years in the main dining room. We had a really good waitress and bus girl!

We just got back from a Princess cruise and our balcony-sitting was severely

curtailed because of the CIGAR smoker next door.  I swear these arseholes lived

on the balcony 24-7.  Every afternoon, every sailaway, every evening, stale

cigar smoke.   I would even be amenable to a 50/50 cruise where smoking is

allowed half of the time: i.e.,  every Monday, Wed, Fri will be smoking days,

with the rest being non-smoking days.

I used to be a smoker, but quit 12 years ago and can't stand the smell of tobacco,

but I'd sure as hell take that over the stench of the cigars:vomit: that nearly ruined

our ability to enjoy our balcony.  Out of 7 balconies we've been pretty lucky

most of the time, with the smokers not smoking incessantly, but for some

reason we really drew the short straw on this cruise.

I welcome the new policy.  Unlike the Paradise which didn't allow ANY smoking

on board the ship, I think Celebrity will probably meet with resounding success

in their endeavor to curtail smoking on their ships.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have one side of the ship balconies smoking and the other non-smoking? That is what Carnival does on the Lido deck - Starboard is smoking, Port is non-smoking. JMHO :big grin:

I'm sure that it's only a matter of time when all ships are no smoking. This is the way the world is evolving, sorry but it's true. I do miss my old friend, but the abstinence has made my life much easier and healthier, and I do not like to smell anyone else's cigarettes. Many countries are now onto the no smoking laws, and they are gathering steam yearly. It is illegal to smoke in Ontario, and the smokers are slowly becoming the very small minority. You'll eventually quit, whether forced to by your health or your government. Strange tho, they could save some time with the law making and breaking, if they would just make the sale and possession illegal.
