Internet
Basically they have a connection fee, and then useage is charged by the minute. You can also buy discounted packages for use.
Dial up inroom service for your laptop is offered on some lines, with charges by the minute.
The usual email server is Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL etc
Uploading of pictures is available, but downloading is often restricted.
Printing services are also offered.
With more and more people having Edge cards or Wireless, the cruise lines are finally getting updated with offering wireless hotspots through out the ship
Cellular
Cellular service shuts down once you enter the port, and starts back up when you leave. Once you leave port, you should realize that you are on "roaming", and we know how expensive that can be! Your bill will read different for some telephone companies but they may read "cruising roam" or something similar.
Sateliite service can also affect your phone. It may read "not service", but will come back when the satellite comes back on line.
Text messaging works for some phones. And calls to other people on the ship will work, if satellite service doesn't interfer with it. Why anyone would want to spend money calling someone on the ship when the phone is on the wall....????? "Hey Marv, I'm on the aft Lido deck watching the whales breaching, can you see it's mouth yet"???
Jamaica as an eg:
Cable & Wireless 1900- $3.50 $ 3.50 $ 2.50 2.50 40¢¢ Available 5¢ per KB
Digicel 900 - $3.50 $ 3.50 $ 2.50 2.50 40¢¢ Available 5¢ per KB
prices starting with first set are for back to Canada, incoming from Canada, local incountry, international, sent text
Above is a sample cell phone charge for Rogers in Canada, calling Jamaica.(Cdn dollars)

It's really very convenient for us to have internet service while aboard the ship. Not too sure about the cellular as we don't take one. I've used the internet service to check up on my family at home every few days and to print off the boarding pass for our return flight home in the past.
As for the cellular, I think some people are unaware of those roaming charges and get one huge surprise when they get their bill!

Sadly, I have to access the internet on a cruise BUT, it's nice that they are making it more convenient. It's not super fast, but I can get the job done.
style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #c6e1d7"I've also been hit by some high charges while in port!!!

| Will they limit the access to where you can use the phones. I would hate to have all these annoying ringtones going while sitting by the pool.

| We can only hope so Paul. I guess we'll find out as the reports begin to come in from others on the ships where the service is available. My hope is that they will limit it.

I saw a site recently that told you were the wifi sites were located. I think it may have been Carnival's.
Roaming fees are huge. I tried to set my phone up for use in the Bahamas this year, and it was a nightmare, but I saw tons of US folks using theirs with no trouble. I even had Telus set up the roaming for me...... live and learn.
Once we took a satellite phone, huge bills (we had it on a trial for a company:D), and it worked beautifully anytime but only on the top deck, but not inside or on the balcony.
I've never used Internet, but may for Europe.
I have used the Cabin phone.... cha ching!

| I like using internet on board, I bring my own lap top. This saves on charges as I down load messages and then log off, answer mail, and then log back on and send them all. I can answer long emails now and it is not taking up 1/3 of the minutes I used to use before. I dont understand though why so many seem to get their phones to work OB as mine never does. I dont think that the Canadian service providers work on the ship.
