First time booking with HAL. How come I couldn't book an assigned cabin (SY). I had to take a guarantee???
Always able to book an assigned with other lines.
Is this strange?? Is this unusual for HAL or routine?
If I had booked an SS I could have an assigned.

Sounds like the cabins in the SY category are sold out. I see it quite often with HAL & Princess where the only thing left is guartantee.

Even though I've never booked with HAL, I've always had a guarantee show up in the situation that Rich described.

I booked the exact cabin I wanted on Oosterdam Sheila..sounds like they are all booked..though you would think that a cruise that is that full they would let you select your cabin

worse case would be they are already fully booked and are now overbooking to cover the expected final payment cancels therefore they can't give you anything BUT a guarantee?

Could be an upgrade. If none are available, they'll try to get someone in that category to upgrade.

They send you home   Relax the beauty of a GTY you get a cabin of equal or greater value. Normally they run a GTY booking only to offer a special price. You may still be able to get an assigned cabin but pay more.

I would love to be on the Solstice, but I've gotta see Turkey, Greece and Venice before I kick the bucket!
We might take a layover in Munich for few days too.

X 2!

Seriously, Sheila, I wouldn't worry about it...unless the cruise is next week.

There aren't that many SY cabins, and being the size & location that they are, they go quickly.  They could be blocked for groups, also, and may come back into inventory later on.

which would you do, assigned or gty?  I am curious.  I am looking at a cruise, that I really should not even consider but now I am thinking why not and I would save $100 to do the gty.  I personally do not care where my room is located.  Well I think I do not care.  lol

GTY is fine if youy follow rule #1 - book the minimum catagory you will be happy with. There is a thread on the NCL DS board where the OP is upset they got a cabin in the catagory they booked. :shoot me: They wanted a picture window but booked a GTY for a porthole cabin.

In my view you need to know the ship you are booking. Some ships the next catagory up can offer cabins that are not as desireable.

Yeah I would never book a gty in a cat I would not be satified in.

i booked an SY, there was no discount on this room, but maybe HAL doesn't offer discounts for a gaurantee. This is the lowest room I wanted, and I will be very happy even if I don't get an upgrade, I'm just very happy I am going on this wonderful journey with three other wonderful people...... Bring on the Whirling Dervishes........

True.  And even though you might be getting an upgrade (to the next higher category cabin), it might be in a less desirable location, like under the disco or under the basketball court.  Just because it's the next higher category cabin, doesn't mean it's a better cabin.
