I feel quite safe posting this here because I know we can agree to disagree and I won't get any lectures or a 500 page argument. ;)

That being said....

I'm still throwing my 2010 cruise possibilities around. I found a great price on the Celebrity Equinox. It looks to be that Celebrity has restricted smoking from the balconies. Cabin isn't an issue for me, because I can't smoke in the cabin anyhow. JMHO, but it gets really stinky and gross. I can't do it. Anyhoo...

I have yet to experience not being able to step out on the balcony to smoke. I will be experiencing this in January when we're in an OV cabin. In the meantime, do you find it hard to have to leave the cabin to smoke? Do you miss not being able to smoke when you want?

I am seriously looking at booking this cruise in a balcony cabin, but I can't get over the smoking restriction hump. If it's that "bad", I might just book an OV to save money.

Where on Celebrity CAN you smoke after the restriction goes into effect? I can only find "in designated outdoor areas". I'd like to book a cabin near one of these areas, but don't know what areas are designated.

I might have to wait and see how the Inspiration cruise goes before I decide but thought I'd get some input from those with more cruising experience.

So now some lines are restricting balconies??? WTF??? Do they think the cruise ship is Iowa now?

We have booked balconies for our last three cruises specifically so that I can step outside whenever I want to. I guess that eliminates the 2 am, post mommy/daddy wrestling match smoke (sans clothes). ;)

Well let us know how it goes for you. I'm not going to get too concerned about it anymore because once the statewide ban goes into effect I'll probably put the damned things down for good. Probably won't be buying any more Powerball tickets either. State takes away my property rights; I take away any additional voluntary tax revenues that they can soak me for.

Sorry Lora, not trying to hijack your thread.......sore subject with me.....if ya can't tell. ;) :big grin:

On topic

I have become a "Balcony Snob", so either way, we probably end up spending the money. But like i said, let us know how your OV works out.

Lora, I just looked at the current smoking policy announcement on the Celebrity Web site. Considering what their current policy is up until the new policy goes into effect, my guess is that port side near a lounge, bar etc. would be your best bet.

"In designated areas on the port (left) side of most public areas (Lounges, Bars, Decks)"

I'm only a casual smoker and also never smoke in my cabin (or house). I did a T/A in an oceanview and didn't have any problem, but we at least had a few options for indoor smoking (casino and cigar lounge). Going out on deck to smoke was rough a few times -- windy and cold. I think I'd take itinerary and season into account before booking on Celebrity.

I thought I read they were going more restrictive with only a single outside area like Oceania.

This is what the Celebrity website states:

Effective October 1, 2008 for all Celebrity ships, smoking will no longer be permitted inside any stateroom or on any stateroom veranda. Cigarette smoking will only be permitted in designated indoor and outdoor areas of the ship, while cigar and pipe smoking will only be permitted in designated outdoor areas. Smoking will not be permitted in any dining venue, theater, hallway, elevator or corridor. Violations to this smoking policy will result in a $250 cleaning fee being charged to the guest's onboard account and may also be addressed through Celebrity Cruises' Guest Conduct Policy. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. A guest must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

I completely understand! This whole smoking ban is going to hit sort of close to home. My sister (who is a single mom of 2) is a bartender. They're already predicting about a 40% loss of business in her establishment. Since she makes 90% of her income from tipping customers, she is terrified.

We did the balcony cabins for the same reason. My husband is a nice guy and will tolerate my smoking habit, but I prefer to be nice about it and not subject him to it as much as possible. I used to step out afterwards just the same as you, but with a different partner of course. ;)

I already stopped buying lottery tickets. That was hard since I LOVE my scratch offs. I usually fill up, buy my smokes, and then buy enough scratch offs to make a round dollar amount. I'm lazy and don't like to balance my checkbook! lol

I think it's horsecrap that the casinos can still have smoking. Gee...who cares if you cut into the small businessowner's pocket, just don't cut into the tax revenue made from the casinos.... :flamin:

Southern Caribbean in January. We've been down there in January before and it wasn't too bad at all. I never got cold on the balcony but it did get to be 'sweater weather' on the upper decks some nights. I definitely wouldn't be looking at Alaska at this point! lol

I wouldn't sail on Celebrity just for that reason. I won't go on my :soapbox: but I want to. I think they could solve everything by making one side of the ship smoking balconies and cabins and the other side not.

I quit staying at Marriotts too - same reason. They aren't getting my money. I'm tired of having freedoms taken away.....selective freedoms that is.....

If they did that the ship would be listing to the non-smoking side from all the weight since "no one" would book the smoking side, you know. ;)

The non smoking balcony issue might be a problem for me as well. I say might because, while I would prefer to be able to have a cigarette on the balcony, I'm just not sure if it is a dealbreaker or not. If the cruise (and cruiseline) was enticing enough I could probably get around the issue. Equally, the chances are pretty good I won't sail on a mass market line which prevents smoking on the balcony. Weird I know but thats the way it is with me at the present time. I have many more options available in "smoking friendly" land destinations, if necessary, they will get my business.

Of course I could just end this all by quitting smoking, something I will need to do in the near future, when I'm ready. :big grin:

I think the smoking restrictions are getting out of hand.  I cannot smoke in the cabin for the same reasons.  I also don't smoke inside my home.  If I were looking at a cruise and couldn't at least smoke on the balcony I consider other cruise options.

That's what I say too! lol

The only reason I'm seriously considering this cruise is because it leaves from Florida and goes to Barbados. I haven't found another line that does that yet. The price is pretty good too. I want to go back to Barbados (via a cruise hopefully) but don't even want to contemplate what airfare to San Juan from Iowa will be by that point. I can drive to Florida in the Hybrid car and it would be much cheaper.

Princess has a few good iteneraries r/t from Barbados but if airfare is the issue then maybe that's not a good option.

I would just book near a bar or lounge or any open deck area non the port side as this is wherte Celebrity's smoking areas are..

And as far as you sisters income is concerned..a few years ago when this was coming into effect in California everyone had the same concerns....bottom line, people are STILL gonna get their drink on regardless..and a few years after that they expanded it to Boiwling Alleys where 8 out of 10 bowlers smoke...guess what?  I havent seen one bowling alley go out of business...

people will adapt to it, no biggee

What is strange though is even though I NEVER give smokers a hard time as I was one for many years and I am NOT gonna be one of those holier than thou types,  I am so used to it that now when I am in Vegas it kinda freaks me out to see people smoking in restarants and whereever as I am so used to not seeing it here and it does made a great difference in the air quality and such but it really doesnt bother me, it just stands out.

I was reading all the new rules and regs for ships this week, and was surprised at the newer hard lines they are taking re smoking.
It will be a beotch to have to go up and out to have a smoke early in the morning, esp if it's Alaska, take a hoodie and some trackers!
It's illegal here to smoke, and Mike's right, there is a big difference (for the good).
Only thing to do is suck it up, it's coming... once you start feeling like you're a leper by going out for a smoke, then you know it's time to quit. Smokers are fastly becoming a scant few. Even Europe is on the band wagon, and who smoked more than them??? Ok, me, but it's two years end of next week. ( and it's been hell)

While we have never cruised on Celebrity, we recently had a bad experience while on th 5/11/08 Norwegian Pearl cruise to Alaska. We were in a deck 9 aft balcony cabin. The people on deck 10 above us were apparently smokers. Every day we walked onto our balcony tofind that we had to wipe ashes and cigarette butts from the deck chairs and balcony before we could even enjoy the balcony. I am an ex-smoker myself( 25 yrs ago) and know the need to have a smoke but too many people don't keep in mind the discomfort that they may bring to others close by  or below them. I guess the rules about not tossing smoking materials overboard don't apply to some people.

I still smoke and that makes me angry! Especially since there are ashtrays readily available. We saw this within 20 minutes of sailaway on our last cruise. Idiots tossing lit cigarettes over the railings. I don't even throw them out the car window. They blow back and they hit people. Trust me, I got hit with one while on my motorcycle a few years back.

What would possess anyone with a lick of common sense to toss them over the rails of a moving ship in that wind??? There are even signs on the balconies saying not to throw ANYTHING over. :flamin:

Aft cabins are notorious for ash from the stacks, maybe it was that rather than cigarettes??
