With all the lawsuits against cruise lines and passengers disappearing off ships, what are your thoughts about all of the security camera's that ships are installing?
Do you think they are a good idea for passenger safety?  Do you think they will keep passengers safe? Or do you dislike that Big Brother is now watching over your every move  (except in the restrooms and cabins)?

Thoughts & opinions, everyone?

Security cameras are becoming an unfortunate fact of life.  For the most part they don't bother me.  However, it depends where they locate them on the ships.  Obviously cabins and restrooms are off limits but what about balconys?  When I book a "private balcony" I don't want to have to worry about a ship's camera taking in the action.

I love them. I am sure there is a man that just returned from Bermuda who is very happy the Dawn had them.

I can tell you without them I would have lost my camera and more important all the pictures from the Dawn blizzard cruise. I left my camera in Spinnakers and returned in 15 minutes when I realized how stupid I was. It was gone. Never turned in. With a little help from the Concierge we got security involved. Roll tape, check bar receipts for table and time of those seen picking up the camera.

Security stopped by their cabin and mentioned if they "found" a camera it might be a good idea to return it to my cabin. The weasel sent is wife by herself to return it. I thanked her. Without the cameras shots like this would have been gone forever.

I think they're a great idea. Especially when you are traveling alone.

Love 'em.  Even the sight of them cuts down on trouble.

I wonder how long they keep the tapes....   And I wonder how many camera's are on each ship?  And do they have staff members watching the screen's 24/7 watching for "incidents", or do they just go back and review the tapes if something happens?

The camera saved me on the Freedom when someone told I had take something from their door.  Security was able to prove to that person I was never near her door for the entire length of the cruise.  I was never even approached by Security, only told that this person had tried to cause issues and security already had her number so I was never bothered.

2000 plus cameras on the NCL Gem. No tape anymore all stored digitally.

One in each stateroom (plus all of the common areas), huh?  That'll make for some interesting video.

They don't bother me at all. If I'm doing some private "balcony business" that happens to be caught, oh well. Hope they like what they see, although not likely! ;)

I'd rather be safe and secure in the end.

I'm all for them as long as they stay out of the cabins and restrooms. Cruise passengers on any given day can be made up of people from all walks of life. Some good, some bad. If they can use those cameras to find someone who is guilty of a reported incident (or prove them not guilty), then I say go for it!

They are great as long as they stay private or used for security/safety purposes

Last thing we need though is some funny footage eg. someone scratching their arse making onto "you've  been framed"(or us equivilent) type TV shows

Since the bacony fire most ships will have a cameras trained down the balcony rows now.

Remember a lot of the cameras are in the crew areas as well.

On new ship designs just about every public area is covered, I only spotted a few places on the Gem that were blind spots to the cameras.

On my Dawn Princess cruise, they didn't need the cameras. I had the most forward cabin on the starboard side (other than crew) on my deck and could easily see and be seen from the bridge.

They don't bother me. If they catch me in action, I know it won't be doing something illegal, it will just be something entertaining.
