The goal is simple: to visit your destination without running out of clean socks and without a suitcase so stuffed that you emit strange animal sounds trying to heave it into the overhead compartment. But if only it were that easy! If you've struggled over whether you need a raincoat for your trip to Cairo (just in case!) or wondered how many guidebooks is too many, you're certainly not alone. Packing for a trip is often a struggle to distinguish what we want to bring from what we need to bring.
When we're forced to choose between our favorite things, we're sometimes tempted to just bring it all and to hell with it — but overpacking can cost more than just extra suitcase space and a free hand. Checking more than one bag, exceeding your airline's weight limit or even checking a bag at all can cost you. Spirit Airlines, for example, charges passengers a $10 fee each way for checking a piece of luggage, and many other airlines charge $25 for a second checked bag. And bringing home souvenirs is impossible when you can't even remember how you managed to pack your bag so tightly in the first place.
Below is a list of what most travelers shouldn't pack, along with tips and ideas on how to pack better. Everyone's packing style is different and we all have our own travel needs, so before you turn red at the idea of leaving behind your beloved toothbrush sanitizer, please remember that these are only suggestions. Leave out a few of these items on your next trip — you'll enjoy traveling with a lighter load, and we promise you won't miss a thing!

All good tips, except that I do not agree with this one:
If you're paranoid that a bag will puncture and deposit its messy contents onto your black silk dress, put all of your liquid-filled baggies in a large plastic grocery bag --
An open-end plastic grocery bag? Excuse me, but that won't prevent any leaking shampoo or suntan lotion bottles from messing up your clothes. I double bag my lotions, shampoo, etc in 2 zip-lock baggies. Better to be safe than sorry.

This is my favorite. Since I learned this trick it has really cut down on how much I pack.
"Bring clothes in neutral colors that you can mix and match, and only pack shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits."

| OK, I am currently trying to figure out what to take and what not to take for a 3 day. I always over pack. The one time I was careful, I regretted not bringing a dress. Now I just pack whatever suits my fancy at the time of packing. I do take black pants to match with more tops but I have to say dresses are so much nicer because it hides the extra weight that attaches to your body while on a cruise.

A 3-day cruise would be easy! 1 pr black pants with 2 different tops, and one dress. 1 bathing suit, 3 pairs of shoes and 2 books.

I am nuts, I know.
I really like to wear dresses on a cruise due to that water weight that I gain. I started packing last night, I have 4 dresses, 1 pair of black capris, 1 pair of black pants, 5 tank tops, 1 dressy top, 1 t-shirt(will add another one once it is washed). See I am nuts and I am not done packing. I will take one pair of jeans(but I will wear them down), 1 pair fo jean shorts and 2 pairs of other shorts. I have 4 pairs of shoes out and I will throw in my rainbow flip flops. I will add 3 bathing suits, a cover up and my jewelry to go with my dresses. lol

Selena!!!!!! You have got to be a member of Overpackers Anonymous!!!!!!
Do you really need 3 different bathing suits for a 3-day cruise? And how can you wear 4 dresses on a 3-day cruise?
Step away from the suitcase!!!! Have an adult beverage! Take in a deep breath!
Now, go back and take out half of what you've already packed!!!!!!
Now, you're done!
Glad I could help!!!!!!!

I was waiting on your reply. I knew it would make me laugh.
I am fully aware I have an issue and need to join some type of step program.
When I was looking at my dresses last night I knew full well there was no way I could wear 4 dresses in 3 nights, but the last time I did this I totally regretted not bringing the "other" dress. Plus one can double for an expensive bathing suit cover up.
Now on to bathing suits...Did I mention I love bathing suits? I tend to go for a swim and then come back and change then decide to go back later to the pool or HT and I do not like to put a cold wet bathing suit on. I really really need everything bathing suit I take.
I will keep in mind tonight when I look upon my suitcase again with adult beverage in hand that I really should take something out but I am pretty sure I will not.
Will you please find me the closest OA step program?

| I take a bathing suit for every day of the cruise and then one...Can't help myself! I always overpack and don't care. I just don't know what mood I'll be in when it comes time to dress for whatever and I want choices!

It'll take me a while to admit there is a problem. Perhaps the first time I have to pay the overpackage fee?? Save me a seat!

ROTFLMAO
I am not admitting I have a problem. No way. I am thinking that in that step program they will "help" me admit my problem I supposely have.
Wonder if they give drugs for this issue? Or adult beverages served at the meetings would really help me to attend.
Of course I will save you a seat but if I am not there will you save me one? lol

| Be sure to look for the "Friends of JSME" meetings on the cruise compass at the start of each day. Usually in the meeting room on Deck 1 at 10:00 a.m.

You did say meet your server, meaning my server and I do not have to share him. Plus he does look to be in his prime. Yum, now let me roll my tongue back into my mouth and wipe the drool off my chin.
