Is now charging to use the site. No way will I pay for this site. He also has advertisers. I will go back to looking up ships in port the old fashioned way of using the cruise lines websites.

Too bad.  It was a good resource when it was free, but I won't pay for it either.

Wonder how many people will pay. If he has advertisers, then why resort to charging?

Is it a charge or do you have to just register?  If he is charging there is no way I will pay for it.

You have to register and sign up and yes there is now a charge. If you sign up before May 1st the charge is $24.99 for two years. After May 1st the charge is $49.99 per year. This site is not worth fifty bucks a year. It will be gone before long or he will go back to a free site. I sent am email to the owner letting him know that I would not pay and judging from others are saying on CC, they will not pay either. Greedy!!!!

50 bucks?  He is out of his ever loving mind.  Good luck to him.

Honestly, how many times does the average person use this site?  Now way I'd spend that kind of money.

Well the owner of that site posted on the Carnival board and feels justified in charging those crazy rates. Funny that for four years the site was free as he let it build up. Now that he has traffic with a good number of hits, he decides to start charging. He stated that folks have been signing up all day. Yeah like I believe that crap.

Never having been there before, what kind of cruise board is it?  What does he have that's so special that people would want to pay for it?

Basically it is a site that you can visit to see what other ships are in port with your ship. Not a big deal. You can also find the cruise ship schedules for most of the ports and get the same information.

Must be smoking crack. I can see little value in information that is little more then directionally correct. $10 a year he has a chance but his ad revenue will suffer. I remember last winter people were having heart attacks because the site had 11 ships in Grand Cayman the same day. I checked the itineraries of the ships listed and it turned out only 5.

There is real money to be made if he in fact has traffic with the right ads. Google ads for the lazy but exclusive ads that kick back a %  of all sales generated from the sites ads can really ad up. The proof my son has a waterfront home in Fl and 100% of his income is from the ads on the sites he built himself. All the sites are free an no they are not porn. :big grin:

I used that site once or twice a year at the most. No way would I pay what he's asking. Like Gordon, there are other ways to find out the same information.

I'm of the same opion . I won't pay for  a site unless it has good content.
If he has paid ads whay charge for the site? The ads should pay for the site
or he/she have gotten very greedy and want to make money.
A site like this usually will fail very quickly.

And also not to mention, the times I've used the site, his accuracy has not been that good.   I've gone into port expecting to be the only ship there, only to find three more already docked and gone in expecting other ships only to be there alone.   This has been more common than rare.

Accuracy is only as good as the source of the information . Time of arrival could be different . When we where in the Caribbeam on Mariner in Jan 08 , the ship stayed on Florida time for the whole week . This was both for the Eastern and the Western . We got to Cozumel we where two hours ahead of local time.

He updated the site today with a new pricing structure. Still not worth it.

New Pricing Structure!!!! –
Due to overwhelming response we have a new pricing structure
- A Month to Month subscription is $3 per month.
- A Yearly subscription is $24.99
- A 2 Year subscription is $49.98
These subscriptions automatically renewed but can be cancelled at any time.

So much for what he was saying the day before about how people were going to his site to register and pay.

Guess his "overwhelming response" was :fingers.

Good question. My guess is, not long. 3 weeks sounds good! ;) Honesty, you look at the site once per cruise, get an answer (which may or may not be correct) and you go on your way. Who looks at that site once a month or more than 4 times a year? Certainly not me! It just isn't worth the price.

I think I just figured out why the owner of cruisecal thought he could start charging... This month's issue of Smart Money magazine has an article on crowded Caribbean ports of call, with a few tips on how to avoid -- or at least deal with -- the crowds. One of the things specifically mentioned was cruisecal.com. I guess he thought with the press he'd get from the article he could start charging for the information?
