Noroviruses are a group of viruses (previously known as Norwalk-like viruses) that can affect the stomach and intestines. These viruses can cause people to have gastroenteritis, an inflammation of the stomach and the large intestines. Gastroenteritis is sometimes called a calicivirus infection or food poisoning, even though it may not always be related to food.
Norovirus is sometimes called the “stomach flu,” although it is not related to the flu (a common respiratory illness cause by the influenza virus).

Interesting article, Deb!

What I find interesting is this quote:
  • How to prevent getting and spreading noroviruses
    • Wash hands often. Wash hands after using the bathroom or changing diapers and before eating or preparing food.

What I find so totally gross (& I see it a lot out in public), is when a mom (or whomever) changes a baby diaper out in public on a table, or  in a chair.  :flamin:  I mean, how freakin' nasty and gross is that?  :vomit:       Takes off the dirty & soiled diaper and leaves it sitting there unwrapped and uncovered  while a new diaper is put on the baby.
After the diaper changing, I have never seen them wash their hands, or clean off the table or chair with any kind of cleansing cloth, paper towel or anything.  Just leaves it for the next person to sit in, or eat on!

here's a valuable lesson.

pearl look after her grandtwins with norwalk while their mother had norwalk one week ago, she is norwalk free................. (norwalk is vicious, it spreads quick, she should have had it by now). HANDWASHING WORKS

DD and SIL have shovelled norwalk in Emerg for 4 days, one week ago, they are norwalk free............ HANDWASHING WORKS

Now with the amount of it up here on dry land, we are bound to pick it up soon without knowing it, but HANDWASHING  works on the sea and land.

Handwashing seems to be the key! And, as with any communicable disease, not touching your eyes or mouth in between hand washings. I always carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with me but this does not replace washing those hands when the opportunity is available.

Demystifying the myths of Norovirus

Myth #1: It is not safe to cruise now because of Norovirus.
Myth #2: Vessels that experience outbreaks are “sick” ships
Myth #3: Norovirus is a cruise ship phenomenon
Myth #4: There is no way cruise ships can battle the spread of Norovirus
Myth #5: Norovirus is caused by uncooked food.

At least that one looks cleaner than some! I guess you hang on to the bar and then engage in some form of acrobatics in order to "get the job done". ;)

Precisely why I must clean off the tray table on the seatback in front of me with some alcohol based wipe, go to lavatory to wash my hands, and return to my aisle seat to enjoy a cocktail.  :wine:

Later,

Me, too!!  I always wipe off the tray table, as well as the arm rests & the back of the seat where my head rests!  And after I clean them, the towelette is always filthy dirty! :flamin:
GROSS!

It's that time of year! Doesn't matter where you are, this stuff can hit. All you can do is take precautions and hope those affected will stay at home.

LMAO!!!  This is/was your typical Japanese toilet when I lived there...it is a VERY interesting situation the first time you have to figure out how to do this...I can't count the times I had to hold on to that pipe drunk and lean back to take care of business! :lmao1:

I do think one of the keys to this is also to keep your immune system up.  Get plenty of sleep on the cruise, don't drink too much, get plenty of exercise......Hmm, I guess I am bound to get it then:big grin:

I thought I was the only one freaking out over possible norovirus. My girlfriend thinks I'm to much of a neat freak. Thanks for the article, I bookmarked the link.

Welcome aboard! :tropics:When are you cruising next? Noroviruses are usually less prevalent this time of year. They seem to pop up during the cold and flu season.
