Tell us about what kind of books you like to read on your cruise/vacation!!

I like a wide variety of books and genres, but I find  lighter reading & shorter books better for me on a cruise.  I try to take paperbacks, as opposed to heavy, hardback books. Sometimes, if I know I don't want to read the book again, I leave it on board for the library.

Of course, I love a good, trashy "romance" novel, too!! I love the author Beatrice Small and the "Sky O'Malley" series.  Very fun and sexy!

I always take a book with me but never seem to find much time to read. I also like a wide variety of topics and Bertice Small is a favorite of mine. I think I have all of her books! :D Another favorite of mine is the Earth's Children series by Jean Auel. Fascinating fiction based on what has been discovered by archaeologists about life on Earth 25,000 years ago. I also like most anything by Clive Cussler, Dan Brown, Dean Koontz and of course, the trashy romance novels!

Ok I admit it....as much as I love to read, when I am on vacation - I stock up on magazines.  I'll probably go through as many as 10 magazines on a week long cruise.  I like having something that I can come in and out and not have to give all my attention to (so I spot some cabana boy eye candy of course!)

When I do take books with my on vacation, I usually look for chick lit since they are easy readers.  I love stuff that I can just fall into and can't put down.

I like the magazines, too. I'll usually go by a store before we board and load up on the tabloids! It's kind of tradition for me to buy tabloids on vacation...it's usually the only time I buy them. Then after I'm finished with them, I will drop them off at the library or leave them on a table on deck so someone else can read them.

I've never taken a book on a cruise :P LOL... I probably should, perhaps I wouldn't drink so much! LOL!!  I prefer to read alone, in a quiet place... And with the Saints and Sinners, there is no such animal

I am trying to finish up DaVinci right now... Just finished Angels and Demons... Been a little busy lately :dude:

I love to read!! :)    I love Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone series and John Sandford's Lucas Davenport's series.  I like to read Stuart Woods, too.

I also love those trashy, historical romance novels!  ;)

I usually take two, and never end of reading them.

Just finished Angels and Demons and Davinci.... wow, good summer fictional read!

But it's time for another travel book, inbetween this mystery.

Try Map of Bones by James Rollins. Somewhat on the order of the DaVinci Code and a good read. I'm just finishing up Private Pleasures by Bertrice Small. Time to make that bookstore run!

Back from the bookstore! Picked up two Clive Cusslers (Black Wind and Golden Buddha), another James Rollins (Amazonia) and one on Loch Ness (The Loch) by Steve Alten.

Have you read any of Steve Alten's books, Deb?  I love "The Meg" series.  Also check out John McKinna's "Shark Lake".....I love that one!

If you want a really good book that talks about the cruise industry, pick up "Devils On The Deep Blue Sea" by Kristopher Garin. Will open your eyes to the backside of the cruise industry.

This new book sounds interesting............

'Seaworthy' adrift with a free spirit Posted 7/24/2006 9:21 PM ET E-mail | Save | Print |  Enlarge
Seaworthy: Adrift with William Willis in the Golden Age of Rafting
By T.R. Pearson
Crown, 304 pp., $24.95 swapContent('firstHeader','applyHeader'); By Don Oldenburg, Special for USA TODAY German-born, free-spirited adventurer William Willis attempted the unimaginable all his life. EXCERPT: Read a preview
In 1938, at 45, he single-handedly freed a prisoner from the legendary hellhole Devil's Island, escaping through pirhana-infested waters and leprosy-plagued jungles. At 60, the frugal fitness freak sailed, alone, from Peru across the Pacific to American Samoa in a primitive 10-ton balsa raft he built, Kon Tiki-style. Ten years later, he took a second raft across 11,000 miles of ocean. At 75, he died, lost at sea, attempting his fifth transoceanic odyssey.
In the capable hands of novelist T.R. Pearson, remarkable details of the strange and exotic adventures of this classic seafaring dreamer, who was terminally attracted to the impossible, enliven page after page with wry humor and danger.

I have this tradition of stopping in at the airport gift shop to choose a novel specifically for the cruise. I read a bit of it on the plane but am usually too excited to concentrate on it. I then bring it out on the ship while lounging on the promenade deck but am so distracted by the beautiful sea. I'm one of those cruisers who cruise just because I love the sea.

Ironically, I'm now an author who has published her first novel set on a cruise ship. It was a blast writing while we lived in Florida and I could just feel the cruise atmosphere all around me. I can't wait to get back on a cruise ship now that we're back living in the Pacific Northwest. I'll have to bring a stack of my books with me. :P

Welcome to the Ship's Library!  For some reason, the other book thread is busier than this thread is.......come on over and check it out! http://www.cruisetraveltalk.com/forum36/141-17.html

I cruise because I love the sea, too. I don't want to climb a rock wall, or ice-skate or go bowling....I can do all those at home. I want to lean on the rail, sit on a deck chair and just take in my surroundings  and gaze at the ocean and the sky and just know I am at sea!
Congrats about your first novel!!  What is the name? It sounds interesting!  Where did you live in Fla?

I like anything that fits nicely on the back of the toilet. Preferably something with pictures. But no puzzle books, I'm fairly intelligent but way to impatient. Coloring books are still fun but only when nobody else is around. My favorite author is a guy named Poe, but he hasn't had anything new out in a while. Anyone know if he's still in the biz?

I don't know where Yardley is, but you all might want to check into this -- always sounded like loads of fun to me!

I like a good Nicholas Sparks book.  I normally buy his newest and take it with me.  Or some off the wall romance novel which is a quick read.
