I'm now on Dragon (Cussler) with Dirk Pitt - so far so good.

Dragon is one of my favorite Cussler books.  Let me know what you think about it when you are finished.

All done Dragon.  I did enjoy it very much - the ending seemed a little unexplained, if you know what I mean.  Cussler didn't go into detail about how the ending (don't want to ruin it for those who have yet to read) transpired.  Do you recall if the next book in the series explains how ?

I've read Sahara and Inca Gold - now it's onto Shock Wave.

I might have to go back to Sahara to see if the explanation is in there - LOL

You guys have gotten me interested, and I'm in need of a new series to start. Can someone give a list of Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels, and a suggested reading order? TIA!

Dirk Pitt and his sidekick Al Giordino are the "hero's" of this beloved series.
Start with Pacific Vortex..............I like his older novels better than the newer ones.  (My favorites are Dragon and Sahara).   I don't really care for the newer ones that he wrote with his son....for some reason, they are just not as suspensful, imo.

Let me see if I can get a list of them in order............
  1. Pacific Vortex! (1983) ***Though released at a later date this is the first book
  2. The Mediterranean Caper (1973)
  3. Iceberg (1975)
  4. Raise the Titanic! (1976)
  5. Vixen 03 (1978)
  6. Night Probe! (1981)
  7. Deep Six (1984)
  8. Cyclops (1986)
  9. Treasure (1988)
  10. Dragon (1990)
  11. Sahara (1992)
  12. Inca Gold (1994)
  13. Shock Wave (1996)
  14. Flood Tide (1997)
  15. Atlantis Found (1999)
  16. Valhalla Rising (2001)
  17. Trojan Odyssey (2003)
  18. Black Wind (2004) - Written with son Dirk Cussler
  19. Treasure of Khan (2006) - Written with son Dirk Cussler
  20. Arctic Drift (2008) - Written with son Dirk Cussler

Becky, those Cussler books are very good IMHO. I think you'll be hooked!

When I finished my last book, I wasn't in the mood for the ones I had left on the shelf so I plunged back into a series that I've been reading for years . . . the Skye O'Malley series by Bertrice Small. Lots of historical descriptions of clothes, food, locations, customs etc. from Ireland to Istabul to France and points between. Really very good if you can get past the "occasional" sex scenes. :big grin:

OCCASIONAL???????????  :lmao1:

I do love that series, though.  I have learned SO MUCH about the Ottoman Empire, Turkish sultans and harems from that series.   I already knew about the Tudor court and Elizabeth 1st, but for it to be in a fictional format made for some very good reading.

I know what you mean, I've read quite a few of the Cussler novels over the years and with some I had to read the first few pages to make sure I had already (or not) read them.  LOL

Memory is not what it used to be.

I did PM you so hopefully I put enough info there to bring the story back to life for you.

I see Catnip has the list covered for you -

From what I recall there are three distintive series of Cussler books

The Dirk Pitt series - love them

The Juan Cabrillo series - better known as the Oregon files - also very good

The Craig Dirgo series - not quite as good as the Dirk Pitt novels but still good.

They should keep you in reading material for quite some time. ;)

I just recalled one of the best authors whose writings I absolutely devoured.

Lawrence Sanders - with his Edward X Delaney (Deadly Sin series)

and Archie McNally (Private Investigator) characters.

Detective stories with a twist.  Great reading I highly recommend.

All done Shock Wave - and I have to say it will have to go down as one of my favorite Cussler books.  Still plugging away at the unfinished list so there may be another I prefer - but this one was great.

Once I've finished up - or get bored with the Cussler series I think I'm going to attack the Lawrence Sanders that I've missed over the child rearing years LOL

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians -

Finished Raymond Khoury's Sanctuary the other day. I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Long on action, short on plot. By the time I got to the end, I thought, "Who cares?" about the supposed uncovered secret. Not near as good as many others in the same genre (e.g., Dan Brown's Angels & Demons, The DaVinci Code; Khoury's previous novel, The Last Templar).

Just started Douglas Preston's newest, Blasphemy, last night. Went to the library to start on Nipper's Cussler/Dirk Pitt list but came out with that one. :P

I did read Blasphemy awhile back - it did drag quite a bit - and I personally found it was too entailed - technical.  Hopefully, you'll enjoy it more.

LOL Well, hubby is a high-energy physicist and I'm a theologian, so perhaps it'll hold a bit more interest for me.

Is this the first time you are reading those, Deb?  I thought you had read that series before.  I have read them ALL and I just love them.  Very sexy, and very historic.....I loved the ones with Elizabeth Tudor in them............

No, I've read the first few in the series several times. Now I'm going through all of her books and picking up some I've misplaced or just didn't have and reading them all. I needed something a bit lighter but something that would also keep my attention. These books do that!

Hi everyone - been catching up on some light reading - Robert Ludlum and John Grisham - I was surprised to see I had missed quite a few over the early 90's - LOL I must have had better things to do at the time.  ;)

Thanks for the suggestions - when I run out of the above I'll be lookin for new authors to try out.

:P

I am beside myself!  I just discovered that one of my favorite authors, Katherine Neville, has her new book out!  :cheer:

It's called "The Fire" and it's the much awaited sequel to "The Eight", which was published about 20 years ago.  The Eight is, to this day, my very favorite book.  I cannot wait to get the new book!

For those that don't know this book, it is on the order of "The Da Vinci Code".

Just finished Blasphemy last night. A decent enough read, which was more than I could say for Preston's Tyrranosaur Canyon, which I still haven't finished. It sure paints the religious right as a bunch of rabid crazies, tho.

I started The Lost Tomb by David Gibbins a few days ago. Same genre as DaVinci Code, The Last Templar, etc. We really need to come up with a name for this genre! So far the first 100 pages are rather pedantic... I'm assuming this is the knowledge-base for what will follow.
