I can recommend two "downer" books for sure:

Just finished reading one, and am currently starting the next.

"When Rabbit Howls" by the Troops for Truddi Chase

and

"Sybil" by Flora Rheta Schreiber, but everyone knows that book already.

Jeeze, if ya wanna feel real bad, just read one of these true stories

Both very interesting books on Multiple Personality Disorder now known

as Disassociative Identity Disorder.   I feel very sorry for what these poor souls battle[d] with day in and

day out, and the tragic abuse that they both suffered at the hands of

their parents was just abhorrent.  There should be a special place in hell

for child and animal abusers.

I haven't read Sybill but I've seen the movie, and what that woman did to her makes me :flamin:.

I did most of my undergraduate degree in pyschology and sociology. My abnormal psych prof was fantastic. We studied MPD/DID but I still didn't quite believe it is a real disorder. There's still a lot of debate in the field as to whether it is a real phenomenon, and besides, I'm not a big fan of Freudian psychology.

While I was doing my ministry internship I was informed that a member we'd be visiting regularly was diagnosed with MPD/DID. I still didn't believe it, until one day when we were visiting her... We'd been visiting for half and hour or so, and it was time to give her communion. We bowed our heads in prayer, and when I lifted my head and opened my eyes, this was not the same person I'd just been speaking to. She'd changed virtually in front of my eyes. Needless to say, I'm a true believer now!

I'm reading The Judas Strain by James Rollins. It's an excellent and fast paced thriller. I can't wait to finish it to see how it ends!:thumbsup: Oh yeah, there's a cruise ship in it. ;) I also read his Map of Bones. You probably need to read that first.

For the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child fans of Agent Pendergast, a new one coming out in August:

Revenant

Synopsis: William Smithback, a New York Times reporter, and his wife Nora Kelly, a Museum of Natural History archeologist, are found brutally attacked in their apartment on the Upper West side of Manhattan. Eyewitnesses claim and the security camera confirms the killer seen leaving the building was the strange, sinister man who had previously occupied Smithback and Kelly's apartment—-and who had died horribly in it exactly one year ago.
Captain Hayward leads the official homocide investigation, while Pendergast and D'Agosta undertake a private quest for the truth. Their serpentine journey takes them into a part of Manhattan they never imagined could exist: a secretive and deadly hotbed of Obeah, the West Indian Zombii cult of sorcery and magic. And it is here they find their true peril is just beginning.

=====

I can't believe they're killing off Bill & Nora!!!

Here's another new one that seems to be feeding James Patterson's penchant for sci-fi/fantasy:

The Dangerous Days of Daniel X

Synopsis: At first glance, Lee might seem like an average fifteen year old, shooting the breeze with his friends around a campfire, crushing on his friend Dana, sassing the assistant principal at school. But Lee has a little bit more responsibility than your average kid: he's the next Alien Hunter, bequeathed with the List of hidden alien outlaws living and lurking on Earth in disguise. All must be destroyed in order to protect the human race from eventual takeover. It's a big job for one teenager. His father had the title of Alien Hunter until #1 on the List, The Prayer, killed him and Lee's mother in cold blood. Lee was just 3. Ever since then, his supreme abilities--like being able to change shape and conjure up his long-dead parents out of thin-air--have gotten him through life, not to mention countless battles with aliens that roam the earth, hunting humans as part of an inter-planetary game.
Next on the list is #6, Ergent Seth, alternately a horribly crude, grotesque horse-headed creature and a pretentious Hollywood film director/producer. Lee's quest to search and destroy #6 leads him right into the arms of super-cute Sarah Wilson--and a deadly trap that takes him to Ergent Seth's spacecraft. It's heading for a place beyond Lee's comprehension: His home planet. For Lee is an alien too, after all. And it turns out the earth, his adopted home, isn't the only planet that needs to be saved.

Denise, check out James Rollins. What I've read of his has always been good!

This is from their website:

Dear Pendergast Fan:
We want all of our readers to know that rumors of Agent Pendergast's demise are greatly exaggerated! We have almost completed our account of his next adventure--which will be titled CEMETERY DANCE (previously known as Revenant)--and we're very excited about how it is shaping up. It's due to be published early next summer. Not only that, but we have some truly fearsome ideas for its follow-up. So many thanks for your patience...and watch this space for more news soon!

Just finished The Fifth Horseman by James Patterson.  HUGH disappointment.  I'm a really big Patterson fan but found that this one just kept ending story lines with no explanation.  I did still enjoy the read but I feel that he is trying to get his books out so fast that he isn't concluding all the stories.

Has anyone else noticed that an increasing number of his book are as co-author? I've begun to wonder just how much of the product is produced by him, or is he just franchising out the use of his name?

I have wondered the same thing!  THe only ones I've noticed without a co-author is his Alex Cross series.

Two of my favorite authors have begun putting out less than stellar works in the last few years, Dean Kootz and Clive Cussler. Cussler's writings as co-author with his son just don't have the oomph that his earlier works did IMHO.

As for Koontz, I read his Odd Thomas series. Good enough, but not great. I still have one unread on my shelf. Maybe that one will measure up.

I agree, Deb.  I do not think Cussler's son makes for a good co-author.

And I enjoyed Koontz' earlier books to the current ones. The older ones like Phantoms and Darkfall were a lot scarier than the newer ones.

I just finished The Last Summer (of you and me) by Ann Brashares.  She wrote the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants series which my DD and I read a few years ago (they were juvenile but I read them so that DD & I could find some common ground at the time).  This book was touted as an adult book but I still found it geared towards a younger crowd.   With that said, I really enjoyed it.  It was a tender story of love between two sisters and one man, complete with heartbreak and tragedy.  It takes place in Fire Island so the beach setting makes it a good summer read.

I've just start Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich.  I need something a little lighter after weeping over the last book!

I finished Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde a few days ago, and started on the next in the series, The Well of Lost Plots. I'll echo what I said about the first in the series -- delightfully clever!!! Hubby just delivered the last two in the series yesterday, dropped off by the lady who suggested these books. Now that I know there are two more, I can read faster and not have to savor them quite so much!

I also finished just this morning some professional reading, How Your Church Family Works by Peter Steinke. It doesn't seem like the sort of thing people here typically read, but if you're interested in psychology, specifically family systems theory, this is a very adept application of that theory to the inner workings of dysfunctional churches. It sheds light on why people in the church sometimes behave in bad, seemingly illogical ways and provides tools for church leaders to recognize and rise above such emotionality in order to heal and lead the congregation.

So far so good.  I didn't get much of a chance to read the last couple of days but it's typical Stephanie Plum..lots of fun :P

I really jump between Morelli and Ranger just about as much as Stephanie does but I think in the end I lean towards Morelli more.  What about you?  Have you ever thought about who would play the main characters in a movie or tv series?  I always picture Benjamin Bratt as Ranger but I've heard others say "The Rock".  I have no idea about Morelli though....

Stephanie's grandmother sounds like Maxine on the greeting cards.  That's exactly how I picture her :eyeroll:

I picture Gradma Mazur as the little old lady, Sophia, on "Golden Girls".

I like Ranger more than Morelli. He just seems so much more sexy and mysterious!

I dislike Benjamen Bratt, so I don't see him as Ranger.  I don't have a specific actor in mind, but I'll be thinking about it.  Somebody Hispanic and sexy......hmmm.....
