Found an interesting travel web site.
http://www.journeywoman.com
She encourages travellers to do the light packing, even to just a carry on. This site prompted me to ask at a party last night, who had done this for a trip to Europe or a European cruise. Of course the majority laughed. But one couple who just returned said that they did. 3 weeks in Europe. Trains, cars, buses, ships, vaporettos, Venice bridges, pensiones without elevators....... you get the drift. It worked perfectly, they wanted for nothing. They were always appropriately dressed. Washed clothing every couple of days.
No baggage claim, no waits, no stressing out.
I wanted to ask about hair blowers, Lancome, makeup perfume, OMG shoes!!
When they added that they even humped along a huge travel book, I decided to keep quiet and not chance insulting her about her skin program or hair care.
So if she can do it.... why the hell can't I??
They advise to chose one colour scheme. (black white, navy) or (grey, brown)
3 pairs of shoes are the max, and you will be wearing one of them. All your heavy clothes must be worn on the flight.
Anyone done this???

I've probably told you about this before, but here goes . . . In college, I had a friend whose parents traveled internationally for business a great deal. Her mother's clothes were all black, white or both. She accessorized with red (belts, jewelry, shoes, scarves). She always had a bag ready to go at an hour's notice and never, as you say, lacked for anything she needed. It worked 30 years ago, it should still work!

As for the other things, smaller sizes are allowed. ;)

I don't think I could pack for a week's vacation with only a carry-on.  I always take at least 2-3 books with me, and my bag of medications takes up a lot of space. Add in there even 3 pairs of shoes and the carry-on would almost be full!
Escpecially if you are vacationing in cool/cold weather climate...packing sweaters  take up SO much space! :shoot me:

Yes it can be done, especially in Europe. Remember too that you can take a purse and I take a largish one:big grin:

It is all about color and not being a "fashion plate". One good pair of stylish walking shoes that you wear and one pair of shoes for the evening. Europeans laugh at us North Americans for thinking that we have to wear something different every day.

Good color combos are black, grey and tan.

Put meds in small containers........lotions and potions in small containers....no jewelry except what you are wearing.......take a small wallet with only the necessary CC cards, etc.

You can do it.........I have.

Just a word to the wise if you are going to pack light.   Be sure to take at least a couple of extra weeks of prescription meds and, if possible, a copy of the prescriptions.    You never know when an emergency will arise and you must extend your stay.

We had this happen to us when my wife had to have an emergency operation and after being in the tourist business a few years, I saw it first hand on a number of occasions.   Inside the country and having your scripts with a national chain is not much of a problem.   No national chain or being outside the country can be a major problem.

Download those 3 books to your Ipod, take the s from the end of sweater, where one pair of shoes, pack one other pair.

I have done several week long business trips to Europe with just a garmet bag in the overhead. I had to wear a suit everyday.

Although I have plenty of room on my iPod for several books, I still prefer to read a book. When I listen on my iPod, for some reason, I can't concentrate. Just looking around at things while listening, I get distracted too easily.
For a week's vacation, I don't think I could just take 1 sweater for the whole week.....especially if you wear casual clothes for daytime, but want a "dress up" look for at least a few of the evenings.

Guys have it easier than girls on the shoe thing. My DH wears 1 pair of shoes and usually doesn't even take another pair! If I can wear 1 pair and take 2 other pairs, I'll be doing good!!! :shoot me:

And my medications take up a whole gallon size zip-lock baggie, even in small containers!

I'm determined to try to do my next cruise with just a carryon.  I did 5 days in London last year just fine with a VERY small carry on (and at that time you weren't allowed a purse flying back from London), so I don't see why I can't manage a carry on for the cruise...especially since the clothes for the cruise will be lighter and take up less space..

Nip, I too am a bookaholic, but my plan this time is to bring just one, really long book.  I'm sure I'll make it the week!  :-)  If not, I'll hit the ship's library.

:big grin:

You don't need but you want those shoes, makeup and hair styling gadgets.

We did our two plus weeks when we picked up our car with 2 small 21" high carry-on bags and 2 small backpacks.  Now, I didn't take a tux and DW didn't take any gowns, but there were actually 2 shirts and 1 pair of pants I never wore.  Now, I did have to wash underwear and socks and t shirts several times, but it is doable.

If you saw the trunk of the little SLK with the top folded up in it, you would be amazed that we were able to do this.

I think I'm going to give a small case a try. Maybe not a carry on, but a small case and no carry on.
I also think I'm not going to do the formal nights. That will save a ton of weight, not that I wear gowns, but bling, shoes, and other accessories add up.

Try the one bag packing technique:

These work really well with the bundle method! http://www.ebags.com/ebags/packing_cubes_3pc_set/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=13032

I use wire hangers to form my "core," laying them out in the size/shape of the packing cube, then wrap my clothes around them. The bundle then neatly fits in the packing cube.

The cubes keep the clothes from shifting around in my suitcase, and make for more modest airport searches. ;) They also double nicely as portable "drawers" when all one has at their destination is shelves.
