I have two formals that I like to alternate. My favorite one is a three piece black pantsuit that has flowing legs, a sequined sleeveless top, and a black see-through jacket. I found this on chadwicks.com.

The other is a two piece black skirt and shirt set. The skirt goes all the way to the floor and has a slit up to your knees in the back. I found this set at Dillards.

What kind of formals do you like?

Where do you shop for formal wear?

I shop at Dillard's and Jones. They just closed down one of the Dillard's stores closest to me so I'm going to have to go to a different one. Usually Dillard's has some great sales and I pick my gowns then.

I have two full length gowns I wear because I have yet to find a cocktail length dress that I like and am willing to pay for.

One gown that I like is black with a herringbone pattern in black with sparkly gold and silver on the v-neck bodice. The matching long sleeved jacket is in the herringbone pattern. Easy to match shoes. Basic black!

My favorite gown is in a medium gold/tan color. It has a scoop neck with a kind of flower/swirly pattern in darker brown and pale blue on the bodice and matching jacket. The day I bought it I found the perfect shoes in blue and tan on sale downstairs! Woo hoo!

I have several... and take which ones I am fitting into at the time, LOL!!!  One of my favorites is my "car wash" pants along with a heavily beaded sleeveless top.  The top is very fitting, in a cream color with black and platinum beading.... it's one of my favorite tops.  I also have a "little black dress" that I like to wear as well... I have a pants suit that has very simple beading on the top (it's black), sleeveless, and the pants are like car wash pants, but have a sheer layer.  I like to wear whatever I wear, for the remainder of the night, so I like something comfortable!

I usually wear long formal gowns on formal night.  I rarely get to dress up at home (maybe once a year) and really look forward to getting all dolled up and girly on a cruise.

Like Deb, I have bought most my dresses at Dillards.  They have the best sales - heck, I even bought my wedding at Dillard...it's gorgeous....for only $40!  :D

I have several to choose from now, because both kids have gotten married since our first cruise.  For that one, I bought a sequined cocktail dress, and an outfit much like GoinCruisin...."carwash" pants and a sequined top.  I got all three pieces at Ross for less than $60, so not too shabby.  I have two long formals from the kid's weddings, a pewter one with a full skirt and beaded sleeveless top, and a cream one with a straight skirt, slit up the back, with a sleeveless crochet sort of top.  I bought a really pretty red dress trimmed in gold beading, to wear on Valentine's Day on the Miracle, but it didn't quite fit by the time I made it through the holidays, lol.

Car wash pants are dressy pants, with four sheer panels attached at the waist, looks kind of like a skirt over the pants underneath.  I have also seen them called fly-away pants.

I guess I am crazy, but I have never worn the same gown twice on a cruise.  I have few right now, but since I have several affairs coming up, I will use them all once more. But I do have a secret, Ebay. I wore the most gorgeous gown for my son's wedding and it cost me a small fortune ( I had a already closed my bridal shop and sold all my stock on ebay by then) so I wore it on my cruise 2 weeks later, but I sold it right after that on ebay. Do not get me wrong I LOVED it. But it had an attached crinoline and it took up too much room in the garment bag, so I opted to sell it. Also a year later I lost alot of weight and it would not have fit anyhow.:D

I am also a bargain hunter and have bought on ebay as well as sell. But I found one of the gowns I wore on my last cruise on smartbargains.com  ($49.99) and another in a little closeout store in the mall ($40). A third gown I have I bought at Dress Barn ( $79.99), I used to work their a few years ago after I closed my bridal shop. So when I tire of these, I will sell them also. And if I am a good girl and go back to eating as low carb as I should be, I may lose more weight and then HAVE to buy a new one for whenever I may need one. I do keep staples in my closet like pallazzo pants and sparkly blouses, you never know;)

I don't think that's crazy at all! Living in the middle of the wilderness, I don't have many chances to go to any formal events. If I did, you bet I would have a closet full!!:P

I am one of the ones that do wear the same formal outfit twice!  We usually go on 10-day cruises, and  the first & last formal nights are generally 5-6 days apart, so I figure who is going to remember what I had on several days ago? I try to wear the same  shoes & purse for the formal and semi-formal nights, too.

I was going to ask the same thing. They're also called cut-a-way pants. I love them.

I like to keep it simple. And sparkle is a definate part of it. Either beading/sequins or jewelery.

ck'd out the formal diva duds, and it must be shoulder season or something...... not much out there. I'm looking for a pair of really dressy thin black slacks or cut aways... something different. I've decided that I will definatly take jackets only and mix them with black formal pants. I have a few, and they pack well. Going for the casual formal look with low weight in the bags.......... Can I kill two birds with one stone?

Yes you can! Mixing and matching is the only way to go to increase your wardrobe choices without increasing the weight of the luggage.

I HATE hose.  But it really depends on the occasion/outfit and season.  Sometimes in winter I will wear them (usually black) or when I used to have to wear suits/skirts for work I would wear hose...  but for a nice dress that I'm wearing strappy shoes with, no hose.

They itch and creep anyway.  :big grin:

I am seriously glad to hear that, GG!!!! Because I absolutely HATE to wear hose. Whoever invented them should be tortured by having to wear them!!!!!!!

I always wondered if guys liked the bare look, or the pantyhose look......

Ok, serious question here.  I like to wear either a suit or tux although I prefer the latter, but would a white dinner jacket  be too much or "out of style" on the second formal night?  Never worn the dinner jacket but, personally I think they look great...JMO.
