After reading about this yesterday, a visit is definately in order.
I've tried twice to see QM2 in person, and failed both times, back when she was still docking in Manhattan. She was late both times, once for a suicide jumper.
A trip to Red Hook would be a little more difficult.

For this, I would brave the streets of NYC!  I hope there are pictures or some kind of coverage that we here, far away in the Midwest, will be able to see. This is going to be something!

The best spots for a clear view (according to CruiseDiva) are:
- Battery Park: On the southern shoreline of Manhattan.
- Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park: Overlooking the Hudson River with great views of the Statue of Liberty.
- The Esplanade: Running the entire length of Battery Park City, along the Hudson River from Stuyvesant High School on the north end all the way south to Battery Park.
- Hudson River Park: 550 acre park extends for five miles along the Manhattan shoreline from Battery Place to West 59th Street.
