While tipping is of a personal nature, here are the guidelines set by the Royal Caribbean to help those that may have questions.

Suite attendant:$5.75 USDa day per guest(does not include a Junior Suite)
Stateroom attendant:$3.50 USDa day per guest
Dining Room Waiter:$3.50 USDa day per guest
Assistant Waiter:$2.00 USDa day per guest
Headwaiter:$.75 USDa day per guest

Note: These gratuities apply to guests of all ages.

Gratuities for other service personnel are at your discretion.

A 15% gratuity will automatically be added to your bar bill or wine check when you are served.

Envelopes for gratuities will be provided in your stateroom on the last night of the cruise.

Gratuities may be paid in the following ways:

Pre paid by having them added to your reservation by your booking agent.
Added to your onboard SeaPass account.
Paid in cash at the end of the cruise

A lot of parents are not sure if they have to tip for small children/toddlers.  Thanks for pointing it out that the tipping guidlines are for every passenger, regardless of age.

Does anyone here tip at the beginning of the cruise?  I have read that some people do tip at the beginning (& the end) of the cruise, thinking they will get better service.

I often wondered if this is true, or not.

I always give my room steward a twenty on the first day and let them know of the things that I would like for them to do such as leaving extra towels, ice, etc. Then mid week if they are doing a good job I give them another twenty and then at the end of the week they always get the full suggested amount plus sometimes a little more.  I do think that it does get me better service.

I think it's very important to consider the tips when planning a cruise. Cruisers trying RCI for the first time, especially those with kids or on a budget, may want to plan for this expense. No discounts for kids!

Our tipping habits vary. Usually we don't tip at the beginning of a cruise. We like to see what the service is like first. During the cruise, we may tip extra to a favorite bartender or the steward when making a special request. If everything has gone well or better than expected by the end of the cruise, we will tip the recommended amount plus. We have NEVER had a reason to tip less than that.

Yes,  I think a lot of families don't consider tipping for small kids/babies.

FYI, the crew would really rather get their tips in cash at the end of the week, not the pre-pay or vouchers for tips. With the vouchers, it can sometimes take up to 3 weeks for them to receive their cash. Most crew members try to wire money home to their families every week when back in port.

I always tip the waitstaff/room stewards in cash.
But I have heard conflicting stories about which they prefer.......(now this is for RCCL only), but I have heard that if they get the tips on your Seapass account, they get to keep it all......but, if you tip them in cash, they have to "pool" it and share it with others.....not sure which is true. I want to make sure each person get's paid fairly.

ANybody else have any knowledge on this?

RCCL does not pool trips, atleast for the dining room and room steward staff. The room stewards sometimes have someone that helps clean the rooms, they pay these people out of their tips.

There has been quite a few threads over on CC about tipping lately and folks skipping out. I really hope that RCI does not go to automatic service charge like Carnival and NCL. While it is convenient to have them added I like to know that the folks taking care of me are the ones who are actually getting the money. Not sure that I trust the cruise lines to be 100% honest with the money. I guess time will tell.

I don't know about NCL, but you can still adjust your tips on Carnival as long as you don't prepay them. I wonder what RCI will do and if they will follow Carnival in their policies?

NCL has automatic tipping. My  work partner just returned from alaska  on NCL . He said he was told if the comment  on the cards are good they got a bonus. But I found service very uneven that way.

I returned recently (this past April) from a cruise on Brilliance of the Seas. I talked in depth to our assistant waiter about tipping. He said most of the waitstaff preferred to get the tips IN CASH at the end of the cruise.  He said they do not pool the tips, but they get to keep all the cash.
So, that is what I will continue to do when we cruise on RCCL.
