We just got back from this cruise a couple days ago, and boy, are we tired!;)

Short synopsis is:

Embarkation:  We went to Port Everglades at 11:20 a.m. and waited in a line

for 25 minutes before someone noticed our Platinum status and directed us to

another line around the corner.  That sure expedited the process since

there was nobody in line at the new checkpoint.  Why didn't they have signs

directing us to the right line in the first place?  Anyway, no big deal, since

we were on board by 12:20.

We have been on 8 Princess cruises and have noticed the decline of little things

and also have noticed the intensity of their upselling process with each successive cruise.  Perhaps newbies would not notice a lot of what we noticed, since it was subtle, but as an 8-time Princess cruiser, a lot of the upselling is really startiing to get on my and my husband's nerves.  I'm guessing most on the mainstream cruiselines do this, so I'll save my breath further.

Well, where to start?

Our itinerary was Ft. Laud followed by 2 sea days, followed by
Aruba [where I saw our very own CATNIP who was on the Radiance:kiss:] and then on to Bonaire, Grenada, Dominica, St. Thomas, Princess Cays [Eleuthera, Bahamas], with another sea day, and then home.

The itinerary was quite good, and we especially loved all the beaches since we rarely get the chance to go places that have turquoise-colored water!!!  Quite different from the Mexican Riviera cruises where the water is the same color as that of the SF Bay Area.

THE SHIP:

We had a corner aft Category BB cabin - C752 - and it was the best cabin we've ever had.  In the past we've had mini-suites and full suites, but this was simply a regular cabin with a fantastic balcony location, and I can definitely say, that was a highlight of our cruise, except for the cigar smoker next door:flamin:

Overall, we wouldn't hesitate to book this cabin again, since it is a lot cheaper, and quite sufficient.

On the Diamond/Sapphire the shower, albeit tiny, also has a handrail to the right which severely impacts your ability to move freely within the shower, but on this ship the handrail was behind, which seemed to be a much better design for us.

MUTS:  We really enjoyed Movies Under the Stars, and fully expected to hate it! they did play an odd assortment of movies and videos, and perhaps they could update their library of videos  but overall I can see why this has been a big hit.

POOLS:  Never used any, but wanted to lay in the shade one day, and there's hardly any shade chairs to be found on this ship.  It's designed differently because of MUTS and the main pool is devoid of the large covering found on the other ships we've been on.  As a result, less shade chairs.  Strange partitions with teakwood benches at the pools as well.  Pretty, but took up room where the shade chairs could or would be.  We had lots of wind the first couple days, so that took care of chair hogs, as there was no way anything would stay on anybody's chairs with us on them, let alone off of them.  Lots of chairs, just not plentiful shade chairs.

SHOWS:  Didn't really catch any.

FOOD: We only ate in the dining room once, and the food was excellent, but the server was surly, and it didn't go unnoticed by others at our table, some lovely couples from Wales and England.

We ate 99% of our meals at the buffets, Horizon Court and Caribe Cafe.  The food was markedly better than the buffet food on board the Golden last year, but at times the pickin's were a little slim since Caribe Cafe was the only buffet open for dinner most nights, with each buffet being a "theme."

i.e. -- Night number one was the Seafood Buffet -- obviously a big hit, with Lobster

claws [didn't have any because of allergy] the crab claws, and shrimp dishes as well as beef dishes. The next night was Rijalsal ???  buffet which translated to Indonesian buffet.  Once again, I like the food very much since it was lots of wonderful Asian dishes reminiscent of Filipino and Chinese food, but I also know a lot of people who don't like Asian food.  One night it was German night; that was when I said, "I'm outta here," and went to the dining room.  Sorry, my husband's half German, but even HE doesn't like German food -- Weinershnitzel and hot dogs and sauerkraut do not excite me.  But the worst buffet of all, for me personally, was the Indian curry night buffet.  The chef was from India, so there was a lot of curry-flavoring in the food, even on the non-Indian night.  Now don't get me wrong, the Indian people are very honorable, wonderful people.  I just don't like their food.

And the next night was "Italian" buffet night, yet the shrimp had a spice hauntingly familiar.  You guessed it -- it was the curry again.  My husband and I kept joking that they must have gotten a good deal on curry.

We couldn't figure out why they didn't open at least one side of the Horizon Court buffet in addition to the very small Caribe Cafe buffet, since gauging by the long lines, it was definitely warranted to have another part opened up, especially on one long port day where we didn't sail until 7 p.m., and of course everyone stampeded the buffet.

We noticed them cutting corners in different ways -- for example, in the past you could ALWAYS make a wonderful salad at the salad bar, but that was not part of any dinnertime buffets, with them having pre-made tiny dinner-type salads -- no breadsticks to be found at lunchtime anymore, no breaded shrimp at lunch anymore --\

However, in fairness to Princess, the buffet quality was vastly improved from last year, so I'll just be nice here.  The fruit selection was awesome this time, with even strawberries and blueberries available at breakfast a few mornings.

Desserts were very good too, with lots of new ones, little coconut creme pies, chocolate peanut butter pies,  blueberry pies, cookies, tortes, all kinds of cakes; also an improvement over last year, and they had their usual fruit tartes.

The International Cafe in the lobby area as a nice addition as well, serving up gelato and basically tapas-type foods all day long.

Can't comment on the Crown Grill or Sabatini's, as we didn't try them, but those who did raved about the Crown Grill and the service!

CABIN:  Our steward was wonderful, but unfortunately he's leaving Princess.

EMPLOYEES in GENERAL:  We felt that the buffet employees were extremely over worked.  We used to be able to go to the buffet and relax.  with each Princess cruise, it becomes more and more of a hassle since the employees are CONSTANTLY buzzing around you like nervous ninnies, afraid to look unbusy for even one second, for fear of being reprimanded by their supervisor.  Yes, I do not exaggerate.  Now they have to get each buffet-goer's water, and they seem very uptight with you if you want to

get your own.  This one steward basically was "arguing" with me and insisted on getting my damned water, and it was only 4:00 p.m., where we had simply gone up there to get a snack and originally wanted to bring it back to our room, but last minute decided to stay, so the minute we sat down, "What would you like to drink?"

"Oh, I'll have just water."  His reply, [with a very morose face....]  "JUST water."

Definitely attitudinal, or sad, couldn't quite grasp it.  Anyway, after 6 minutes or so still with no water, of course I wanted my water since I have to drink when I eat, and was very thirsty, so there I go to get my own water, and the other guy insisted on it I told him it I would get my own and he got really snappy with me and refused to let me get my water.  I would like to preface this with I was never rude in any way, shape or form, since I felt very sorry for these poor employees and what Princess is doing to them in unconscionable, IMHO.  They were never forced to get our water before, and they have enough crap to do without having to be our servants.

The unhappiness of most employees was palpable, with others noticing this as well.  I felt so sorry for them.  They work horrible, long hours, and ever since Carnival took over, it's been very hard on a lot of Princess employees.

My husband and I can remember when all the drink servers/buffet servers used to joke around a lot with the passengers, and they all had a sincere smile of their face, not the robotic demeanor that we experienced with this last cruise.  Perhaps a lot of them were nearing the end of their contract.  I've heard of this happening, but had never experienced it before.

PORTS OF  CALL:

Aruba:   As mentioned before, we saw our very own CATNIP there, and it was a lot of fun seeing you Denise.  I hope your mother is feeling better after her fall, and I'm sorry I didn't get to meet her.  Sorry we didn't get to meet Bob and Pam, either.

All in all, we had a wonderful day at the beach in Aruba.  Took the Arubus for $2.30 round trip, where we asked to be dropped off between the Radisson and RIU Palace. Rented beach chairs at a little stand and an umbrella for $31 for the two of us. Beautiful weather, beautiful day.  They sell the usual crap near the port that all the destinations sold.

Bonaire:  Ugly island.  Apparently it's all about under the water there.  We went to a Princess exursion called "Day at the Plaza resort"  For $79 pp, what a joke:finger:We could have gone on our own for $20 pp, and some of our friends from the dark side rollcall even beat us there by walking -- yes, it was a 10-minute walk.  And the Princess excursion states you;ll get a wonderful buffet lunch -- well, lunch was supposed to be served between 10 a.m. and 11:30, but our bus was to pick us up at 11:25, so lunch wasnt even ready until 10:50, and then it was ONLY meat and tomatoes -- yep, true story -- LOL  $79 PP.  We snorkeled but didn't see an abundance of anything.  But that part is not Princess's fault.  Oh, yeah, if you looked left of the beach, there was a Valero refinery. LOL  Was not impressed.  Next time we'll go to Klein Bonaire.

Grenada:  Took a nice tour of some spice plantations and got to see a good deal of the island.  Also went to a rum distillery.  Whew, that rum caught my mouth on fire:flamin:no kidding! LOL    Seemed very poor; the people seemed extremely nice.

Dominica:  Loved this island, which definitely smelled of sulfur from the ship.  It's a rain forest, and we booked a tour with Reyno, of Reyno tours, and for $40 pp, got

a five-hour tour of the Emerald Pool, Trafalgar twin falls, Mr. Nice Fruitstand, and so many other parts of the island I can't list them all.  A highlight was driving through all the banana plantations and seeing so many tropical plants in one venue. I've been to a lot of tropical places, but never have I seen, cocoa trees, nutmeg trees, papaya, mango, bananas, Poinsettia flowers in the wild, ginger, et cet, all in one place;

Coming from CA, we have a lot of citrus and avocado trees, but Dominica had these trees as well as the above-mentioned flora.  Truly wonderful people -- I was left with a good impression.  Our guide mentioned that Hugo Chavez wants to come in there and build a refinery, which most of the people are against.  Could you imagine in Hugo Chavez goes to Domica what would happen to its people?  It's absurd to even think about.  It's a very ecology minded island.

St. Thomas:  We went to St. John for the day on our own.  Got off the ship right away and taxied to Red Hook for $10 per person, along with 8 others, and took the

$5 ferry to St. John... another $6 pp to taxi from ferry to Trunk Bay.  $4 admission pp to Trunk, and another fabulous day at the beach!

Princess Cays:  Wonderful day in the Bahamas.  Really good snorkeling by the rocks!

Disemarkation:  Late flight, so took a Ft. laud tour and tour of Everglades which was interesting, but really just wanted to go home so the day seemed real long.

Didn't mean to be so lengthy and I'm tired, so I'm going to quit now.  there's a lot I'm leaving out, but feel free to ask anything you want to.

Hey, Mike!!

Eldred and I thought about you during our cruise as we spent a lot of time at the

bar near the back pool talking to the bartenders and I couldn't help but fixate on

your favorite bartender turquoise jackets!!:lmao1:

seriously, it's time Princess outfit their employees in different clothing.  After 5 years it's been the same clothing.  Cheap-ass company.

You know, overall it was a great cruise, if I didn't say it before -- the Emerald is

spotless, only 11 months old and is sparkling.  Every day they were varnishing

something, including our balcony, and the clientele on the ship was pretty good, too.

We had an equal mixture of 40-somethings through 70-somethings; not a "scooter"

cruise, so to speak.  Seemed to be a lot of Brits on board as well as a smattering

of Candians, with the rest coming from middle America [not too many from the

coasts or Florida IMHO]

Drinks have gone up.  I thought they'd gone up .75 a drink, but checking my

old Princess Patters, it seems they've only increase the prices by .25 a drink.

in 2003 an Appletini was 4.50 and now they're 6.75

Forgot to mention that Princess had put an unauthorized charge of $72 on my bill,

and for the life of us we couldn't figure out how or what, especially since we were

drinking at the back-pool bar at the same time that the $72 unauthorized charge from a gift shop showed up on our bill --

so after speaking with a purser, she had to pull all the receipts from "Facets" and

she found the $71.83 charge, and it seems our "code" for our room card was 4128

and someone from 412"0" purchased the $72 in Facets, and the pursers punched

in our code number instead because they thought the zero looked like an 8, so

be very careful and ALWAYS, ALWAYS check your bill.  There were several others

who had issues in that regard.

Thanks Dana and welcome back! I wonder what's going on with that ship that so many of the crew seem to be unhappy?

Thanks for the thorough review. I've only been on the Crown and am booked again on her for Nov but enjoyed your review.

I wasn't big on Bonaire either but so many people were. I got off the ship for a couple hours and then went back to lay out by the sanctuary.

Since I've only cruise Princess 1 time, I was interested in hearing what things have changed over the years that they now nickel and dime for.

I have an aft balcony as well B755 - not a corner but I'm excited about my aft!

B755 is another of those very coveted balconies.  I wish I were going

on the Crown Princess or Emerald or any Princess --  lucky you!

How did you like/not like MUTS?

Hi Denise!!!

we had a great time.  I'm also glad Tommycruiser/Bethcruiser posted

beth's review. We were able to spend some time with Tom and Beth

onthe Reyno tour in Dominica.

Okay, get out the drums... drum roll.......... ta-daaaaaaa!  I LOVED Movies Under

the Stars.  I was sure I would hate it.  E and I enjoyed the concept.  I think

it was good for us as we would just wander around at night and eventually

end up at the MUTS pool area and catch of glimpse of this or that.

Others on our cruise were mortified by the Pavarotti concert that was

being blasted, but we had an occasion to catch it one afternoon before

sailaway and the music of Pavarotti was magical.  I could have listened

to classical music under the stars all day everyday.

It's hard to explain, but I guess it brought me back to the olden days

when I was a teeny bopper and we'd go on vacation and they would play

outdoor movies and the weather was warm.  Really nice.

I only wish they would modernize the selections of the things they're showing.

I hope the rest of your cruise was wonderful Denise...

You know, Florida is a long, long way for us...  I'm not so sure we want

to fly over there so soon.  This last trip was hell getting back.  Stranded in

Dallas for a long layover   -- [not like your 10-hour layover last year] but

just a hassle from the get-go.  Too much flying and layovers.

Other than that, it was a wonderful cruise, probably the best one ever.

I concur with a lot of Beth's/Tom's review.

I have never experienced it, but from what I understand it's a HUGE screen TV on the pool deck. They show movies/sports/ etc  all day long and into the night.

How late do they run the movies? Till midnight? At night, is it very loud?

That's it exactly. Some of the Carnival ships are getting MUTS (movies under the stars) now and I got to check it out on my last cruise. (Carnival owns Princess or something). A huge outdoor screen on the pool deck, sometimes a bit too loud, where they show concerts and movies. Some ships even have popcorn to enjoy while you grab a lounger and relax.
