We're taking our first cruise on the Diamond Princess in a month or so and I have a few questions:  ... and I'm sure I'll come up with more...

Is cell phone service available during the cruise?

Does the DP have a cell phone tower?

Has anyone tried using TracFone while on the transPacific?

Will the DP have anything comparable to NCL's martini/margarita tastings?

Is there a self-service laundry?  (I'd hate to have to bring enough clothes along for 15 days!)

We're getting married in Honolulu on the 10th.  What, if anything, will the DP do to help us celebrate?

How does anytime dining compare to NCL?

Thanks all! :big grin:

Unfortunately, we don't have very many Princess cruisers here.  :(

I have sailed 6-7 times on Princess, but the last time was 3-4 years ago. I really can't help you with any of your questions except for the laundry one! Most of the Princess ships do have self-serve laundry.

Not sure on the cell service though all Princess ships have ship to shore phones for emergencies..

If a tracphone is a satelite phone it should work during your cruise..

Princess does have Martini clinics....

There are laundries on every other cabin deck....you can see them on Princess web site deck plans I believe..

I think a tracphone is a pre-paid cellphone.

Yes, TracFone is a prepaid cellular phone.

Most of the Princess ships have self-service laundry.  I've never been on the Diamond, but if you look at the deck plans, check every other floor for a laundry room - if it's there, it's self-service (bring coins to use them - the coin changers often don't work).

As for anytime dining, I loved it.  I can't compare it to NCL's free-style, but anytime dining works much like a nice restaurant at home - you can go when you want, and sit with who you want.  If you like to sit with strangers and meet new people, ask to be seated at a large table.  If you'd rather sit with your significant other, ask for a table for two.  If you like the comfort/service that comes with having one wait-staff all week, ask for a reservation for one table all week.  I've heard that you can't ask for reservations during "peak time" (maybe 6:30-8), and that waits can happen then, but hey - you're on a cruise!  Grab a drink at the bar while you wait, and browse the shops for a few minutes!  (I think these days most ships have those durn pagers during peak times - but it means you're not waiting in line, at least.)  I actually had a set table my first cruise with anytime (we found a wonderful wait staff), and went with various tables my second cruise, but NEVER had a wait.  However, we tended to go to dinner as soon as they opened at 5:30 - we eat early at home, too.

I can answer general Princess questions, if you have any more.  I can't answer anything about the Diamond.  But, it sounds as if you're in Hawaii - that, I can probably answer a question or two - we went there on our honeymoon and our 5-year anniversary.  I don't know about phones on the ship, but phones on the islands should work just fine in most areas.  On the ship, if you're on the ship's satellite, it may be a large upcharge.

Just got off the Crown Princess Saturday - can give you my experience:No cell service was available at sea - I viewed that as a plus.  No martini/margarita tastings - although we had plenty, nothing organized.  They did have a wine tasting for about $9 per person that seemed like a great deal from what they described.  Laundry rooms were awesome - if you plan on doing laundry bring your own detergent if you have capacity - I think it cost about $5 to do one load all the way through, we did not bring our own detergent.I will have lots to write about anytime dining when I get to me review within the next week - so watch for my review in the Princess section - anytime dining will be AWESOME if it is just two of you or maybe even four people.  Our group of 10 all had anytime dining and we just made an res for the same table at the same time - so essentially it became "traditional" kind of necessary with our group.  I would have liked to have had a much smaller group - and been able to use the flexibility on port days.
