We were booked in a BC on Jewel and then upgraded to a BA.
I asked TA to look to see if any BAs were available on Deck 10 and she said none were, so we booked one on Deck 9. I like aft balconies a lot, for the view, because there is usually less hall traffic and because the balconies are sometimes larger.
However, in doing preliminary research it seems that the AFT BAs on Jewel on Deck 9 do not have large balconies. In fact, they are the same size as the side balconies. Can anyone confirm this?

| Confirmed - but the view is to die for.

So I guess all that fits is two chairs and a small table? I'm trying to visualize 37 sq. ft.
Do the chairs recline at all?
Thanks for the quick reply, btw, Shoreguy.

Two chairs and a small table. One of the chairs like the other BAs should have a reclining back.
Here is a picture from the AE next door. It will give to a feel for the depth

Let me see if I can find the webshots from Ask4Jay our neighbors in the BA

Thanks.
I'm a little disappointed, but I'm sure we'll survive.

| I am considering an aft balcony for the first time - a BA on deck 8 on the Dawn for Bermuda next Summer. I know the balcony won't be any bigger on this deck, but we want to be able to have family in oceanviews nearby. My question is about the movement in the aft cabins. I am trying to talk a family member into this cabin and he recalls being in 20 ft seas on the Spirit. It was smooth in his midship balcony but when they walked forward or back, they were getting tossed around. Is there any rebuttal to that argument? Thanks!! Check out my (long) "Hanging on for dear life" thread from last winter:
http://www.cruisetraveltalk.com/forum29/5612.html
There's plenty of details on page 2.
The view is to die for from stern cabins, as long as you're willing to put up with drawers and doors that won't stay closed, wearing a seat belt on the toilet, and wood trim that creaks like an old Spanish galleon when the seas build.....

Yikes! Sounds pretty hairy. But did I miss the details about the aft? Granted, I skimmed. :)

If you caught messages 40, 56, and 67, they covered most of the pitfalls of stern cabins that I encountered.
If you want to try and re-create the hokey-pokey dance from trying to put pants on while the deck moves under your feet in a stern-facing cabin during rough seas, just stand on a soccer ball with one foot and try to put pants on. After bumping into the walls one time too many, I decided that the only way to put on pants without protective padding was lying in bed. Don't get me wrong, the view was to die when we were docked or in calm seas, but the challenge to your motor skills trying to do something as simple as type or put pants on became frustrating real quickly (at least for me) in rougher seas.
My apologies for sending you to that thread, since I just realized after re-reading it that I never posted the last day's entry about capturing the flag, or what I found about the ship's stability in general from walking around in rough seas towards the end of the cruise. I had mapped out a range of cabins on deck 11 of the Gem that were the least tossed in rough seas, and never posted my findings on that thread like I thought that I did.....

| Thanks! I enjoyed your posts thoroughly, but I am not easily scared off so I am going to try my luck with an aft cabin, planning to sit whenever putting my pants on. My brother on the other hand will not be swayed (pun intended) and wants a midship balcony with the least movement. As I said, we're on the Dawn, what wold be your recommendation for him?

Stay home???
Seriously though, I was only on the Dawn once, and it was in cabin 8500. I don't recommend that cabin for anyone without a sense of adventure, because the toilet needs seatbelts in rough seas.
I don't know where the stabilizers are located on the Dawn. (Does anybody have dry dock pictures?) From the walk that I took on the Gem in rougher seas, I'm going to extrapolate the "sweet spot" on the Dawn to be in the vicinity of staterooms 9116/9616 or 10108/10608. Basically, anywhere forward of the mid-ship elevators, but no further forward than the pool on deck 12. The lower decks are usually more stable than the upper ones, and I can tell you from my experience on the Crown in a mini suite where the outside bed was rolling much worse than the inside one in the same cabin that being closer to the inside/center of the ship is also a less bumpy ride.
Anyone have experience with any specific cabins on the Dawn that suit his brother's needs?????
