Tapping the veteran braincells........
A few years back one of NCL's stops at GSC resulted in leaving about a 100 or so passengers to camp out overnight on the island due to a storm coming in that made it unsafe to continue tendering.
Does anyone remember the details? I cannot for the life of me find any archived links on the 'net.

| I never heard this, but I'll bet that was interesting. I'd love to hear the details.

| I never heard about this either. It was probably banned from CC.

Oh you're about as much help as my husband! LOL! He remembers it too, but can't remember which ship was involved, if it was before or after the roque wave time frame or nothing. Then again, either can I!!
I'm not even certain they stayed all night, but it was for a lengthy period. I can recall the threads over at the darkside from folks complaining that there was few places for shelter and that they got cold and wet from the storm.
I tried all the obvious keywords at CC, but come up empty handed. It had hit the newspapers too and I can't find anything in the search engines either.
I thought for sure someone over here *ahem* would have the info tucked away somewhere. :D

| AHHH, thanks for the link. Great to reminisce on the cc postings regarding the woman overboard and the perverts ruining the cruise.

I found this reference to the incident in question, from a 4/2003 Dawn cruise out of Miami:
http://www.creationent.com/past_events/cruise/cruise2.htm
"FRIDAY April 11 - Bummer of a day. We were supposed to go to the Grand Stirrup Cay but a front had arrived and they were afraid. The last time a front came in this bad everyone ended up stranded on the island overnight so they weren't taking any changes this time."
I also discovered through searching for info about this incident that NCL at one point used to offer a stop at GSC on the Spirit that included an overnight beach party! I don't see any current cruises offering this on quick scan of NCL's web site, so I'm guessing that there must have been issues with tendering at night. Oh, well.....

The Spirit was not part of the fleet prior to 4/2003. In fact that was the first full year of the Dawn. The reason nobody can find any details on CC is at that time they were on the old boards and few of the posts were movedLast edited on Wed Jul 23rd, 2008 02:32 pm by shoreguy

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. The quote about canceling the scheduled GSC stop so that people wouldn't get stranded was from a 4/2003 Dawn cruise, referencing a prior cruise that left passengers stranded overnight at GSC as a similar weather front came through.
I also discovered that the Spirit's original NYC itinerary included an overnight beach party at GSC, hence the paragraph break both above and here. In one case, people were complaining about the possibility of being forced by rough seas to spend the night on GSC. In the other case, it was an planned/included activity on their cruise itinerary!
Check out question #7 of this artifact on one of NCL's web sites, from a trivia contest when the Spirit first arrived in NYC:
http://submit.ncl.com/ncl/spirit_2nd_yr.htm
7) Which itinerary below, offered by Norwegian Spirit from New York City, offers an overnight beach party on NCL's Private Island, Great Stirrup Cay?
* 10-day Exotic Southern Caribbean
* 7-day Bahamas/Florida
* 6-day Bahamas/Florida
* 8-day Eastern Caribbean
* 11-day Exotic Southern Caribbean
My guess would be the 7-day Bahamas/Florida itinerary, since GSC is out of the way for most of NCL's current eastern/southern Caribbean routes.....

Aha, so I'm not dreaming! Thanks for going to the trouble and finding some reference to it at least. I guess it was the Dawn too.

Are you sure that it was NCL? RCCL had an incident on neighboring Little Stirrup Cay (Coco Cay), apparently in 11/2002:
http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=13179528
Here's the story on the passengers stranded on CocoCay from CC's archives dated April 21, 2003.
"Not on the list of “new additions” is a set of portable cots though on one cruise last fall the island could have used them. In November, CocoCay made headlines when waters got too rough to allow passengers on Majesty of the Seas, which tenders folks in to a floating dock, back onboard. Instead, more than 1,400 of the ship’s 2,200 guests spent the night, “roughing it,” on lounge chairs and wrapped in beach towels (not to mention blankets, comforters and pillows sent over from the ship) on CocoCay. Many of the ”stranded” passengers found the once-in-a-lifetime experienced, however impromptu, of camping on a private island quite an adventure (Royal Caribbean’s offer of a full refund and a certificate for a free four day cruise to those impacted didn’t quash spirits either). In fact, some are trying to convince the cruise line to schedule another CocoCay overnight during a Majesty of the Seas voyage -- this one on purpose, of course. A Royal Caribbean spokesman is coy, however, about any plans to do so."
Try not to gag at the CC drivel.....

Similar story; that's for sure. However the event I'm referring to occurred after we started cruising, which was Jan 2004.
Thanks for trying to find it!
ETA: Then again, maybe we heard about it after we started cruising; not that it actually happened afterwards. LOL! IDK!
