When I booked our aft-facing balcony cabin on the Gem for our next cruise, I had the option of booking one on Deck 8 or Deck 9. My PCC said she did not recommend Deck 8 aft because it is right above the bowling alley and there might be noise. She added, though, that no one has ever complained to her that that is so--she just plays it safe anbd does not recommend it. So I went with Deck 9.
Has anyone ever been in an aft-facing cabin on the Gem on Deck 8? I am eyeballing upgrading to an AE suite on Deck 8, but don't want to hear bowling balls rolling down lanes and crashing into pins every night!
Any input available from anyone out there? Thanks in advance!

| I would take a balcony BA or AE on deck 8 before deck 9. They are deeper on the Gem. I have sailed with folks in both the BAs and AEs on deck 8 and nobody heard a sound from the bowling alley or disco. The only cabins that had any issues on deck 8 were some of the inside cabins directly above the disco and they got the base beat all night.

| Is an outside AE any different from/better than the one next to it on the inside?

I sailed in 8632 and had friends in 8132 -- no bowling alley noise in either.

I'm the friend from 8132. We not only had not noise from the bowling alley we also had no noise from the disco at night. Wonderful location.
SG - is it the balcony or the room itself that is deeper on deck 8 over deck 9? We've booked a deck 9 outside AE for next January so curious about your comment. Thanks.

The two deck 8 inside cabins opposite the aft balconies do get some noise from the disco, this is not evident in any of the cabins that are close.
I think they run the music above a design threshold since when we got it turned down one night it became almost inaudable but still best suited to the night owls rather than those that like to turn down early.
Pacing it out the cabin bed seem to right above the speakers in the ceiling over the dance floor so they should be able to selectivly reduce the volume of noice getting into these cabins without impacting the "disco".

Deck 8 is deeper across the board. Not to the extent of deck 10 but deep enoungh to get a lounge chair on it that you can not on deck 9. I need to go find some pictures from 8.
This from the Jewel will give you some insight into the depth of deck 9.

Here is a picture of the balcony in 8132 from pretty much the same angle as Jim's picture. I don't think I've ever attached a picture in this forum so I hope I did it right! If not, you can find it here, along with my other pictures of this cabin.

We were aware of engine vibrations but no disco or bowling alley noise, and there's very little foot traffic in the hallway so there is no noise from the outside. We loved this cabin and would definitely book it again.

Those 2 balconies look about the same to me. Thanks everyone, for all the great info! I upgraded to the outside port AE (8630) today. I am excited!

I just happened to notice yesterday that 2 of them were still available (or maybe available again)--glad I acted on it when I did!

Thanks for the pictures of the AE balconies on both decks. Had hoped to have the butler or room steward bring a lounger to our balcony in January. May have to re-think that. We'll see.

Silvergirl.....Thank so much for posting these pictures. I just booked this exact room # 8132 2 days ago for Feb 2009 as a suprise for my boyfriend. Was nervous about the aft location and noise from bowling/nightclub. You have put all my worries aside!!! Now the big trick is can I keep this quiet until Christmas? LOL
To everyone else who posted about the Gem....thank for all the great information!!!
