We too are looking at Alaska on the Sun. When we were on it before we had an AC aft, but based on shoreguy's opinion we are looking at the AD forward (more money for excursions as you say). In loooking at the deck plans, it looks like AD 9203 and 9003 have the same blank balcony space that shows on our old cabin 9076. In that case, it turned out to be a wraparound (yea!!!!) So is that the same situation with the 2 corner AD's or are the balconies just normal? Also the AD cabins all look like they are different shapes, what's the deal on that?
Thanks for any info.

We're debating between an AE aft and the AC FWD...we're trying to decide if it's really worth the extra $1300 for the FWD cabin...
Anyone (Shoreguy ) want to chime in???
This really would be a once in a life time cruise for us (well okay, maybe again 20 years from now when we retire...)...
Decisions, decisions...
Hi, Cubechick. We've cruised to Alaska 6 times and just booked our 7th cruise for May 30, 2009 on the Star. The last 2 years we cruised on the Pearl to Alaska and Glacier Bay and loved it!
Both times we were booked in AE 9670 and both times to got an upsell call. In 2007 we had an upsell to the Deluxe Owner's Suite (terrific!) and this year we got an upsell to Owner's Suite 9004 (very nice).
If it were me, I would book an AE Suite. The front balcony in an AC is very windy most of the time and virtually unusable, especially at sea when the Pearl is cruising along at 21+ knots. Once the ship slows down as she nears the different ports, then it's okay out there and it is terrific viewing for Glacier Bay, but probably not worth the additional $1,300.

Thanks for confirming what I thought I should do. We're currently booked in 9670! Maybe some of your upsell mojo will rub off on us!

Both will offer a great view. My $.02 I would save the 1300 and invest it in great tours a must in Alaska. Hi, SG you are right on! dogsledding and helicopter about $400-$500. Where else are ya get on a glacier? Other things to do to! Bring plenty of $$ for shore time, stuff is verrry expensive.

Safe to assume that while in Glacier Bay, that they try to position the starboard side towards the glacier so that pax without a balcony have a good viewing perspective?
I'm thinking a forward balcony would not have an advantage while in Glacier Bay, although I think it would be a plus for the remainder of the cruise.
Neither ship goes to Glacier Bay. Only the Pearl and port side gets more viewing time. If you take the Sun I would sign up for Sawyer tour on that leaves Juno just before the ship and meets up with the Sun in Tracy Arm late afternoon. The only way to get very close to the Glacier and the best tour I have taken. We saw more whales then the whale watching tour.
Lot of pics if you click on the pics below

Approching the Sun in Tracy Arm

So, in this tour the Sun leaves Juno without you and you board it again at Tracy Arm. Did I understand that correctly? Is this a tour you would neet to take then, through the cruise line.

I'm in the process thinking of doing Alaska for the third time. This time, with some driving..... maybe when the dog departs this world we'll be able to leave for a really long time, and do it properly.
So Barb .... only put it on the back burner if you really want to go, you will really love it.

I assume you are addressing me........
Alaska is already on the back burner. We changed our reservation to the Jade for the Eastern Mediterranean. For some reason, my hubby felt seeing me on a camel was more priceless than seeing the glaciers, and whales, and panoramic scenery.
I will punish him long time! (But I also look forward to Rome, Pireaus, Izmir and Cairo!!!!) Alaska will be in a future itinerary. I'm certain of that. I've just got to work on him some more.
